This week's list is inspired by crossovers and hybrids. While many games are clearly "100% board game", they have always had crossover moments with other media, such as Interactive Board Games for the TV, Dungeon Crawls, and other platforms. I thought it would be interesting to discuss what of these media we have tried, and if we enjoy them.

When I was a teenager, we hosted a Murder Mystery game day that utilized our VCR to provide the narrative and setting. When we got to a certain place in the game, we would pause and play the VCR tape.

Have you ever played an Interactive Board Game?
More Broadly, have you ever done a Murder Mystery?

Role playing games have come full circle in recent years. Dungeons and Dragons was originally inspired by war games, and then split off into its own unique game. However, as of today the #1 board game on BoardGameGeek is Gloomhaven, which brings many of the best elements of role playing games back to its board game heritage.

1). What do you think of Gloomhaven specifically? This can be game play, or more generic such as "how do you feel about BGG's rating systems and its emphasis on newer games?"

2). Do you play role playing games? How did you begin playing them, and what are your favorite moments and characters?

Board games are such a staple of the american household that an entire movie was made based off of a board game!

1). What do you think about Jumanji as a movie?

2). Let's build Jumanji! What rules do you think that a Modern Day Jumanji game should have?

Even within board games, many genres have crossovers in unexpected ways. Euro games have begun featuring more narrative gameplay, while "Ameritrash" has been steadily increasing their emphasis on mechanical balance.

1). What is your favorite hybrid board game (whatever you deem hybrid, be that Russian Railroads' 18XX/Euro combination, or Dead of Winter).

2). Name one board game genre/style that could learn something valuable from a different one.

Top Fives are fun! Ask away!

Top 5 Math Tidbits:
1. Ancient Babylonian mathematics used a sexagesimal mathematical system. Rather than Base 10, as we use today, they used an alternating base 10/base 6 notation. Their notation can lead to ambiguous results that can be very hard to interpret because it repeated every 60 numbers (thus 1 and 60 were represented the same way):

2. Spaces can be "Connected" but not "Path Connected." The general concept of whether or not something is connected is whether or not you can split the space into several distinct pieces with some boundary between them. A "Path Connected" space is one in which given any two points in the space you can basically take a pen and draw a path between the two points without lifting your hand. Queue, the Topologist's Sine Function:

It's important to note that this space includes the origin (0,0). At the origin, even the tiniest circle around it include some points that are in the space, so it is connected. It is not Path Connected because you also cannot draw a continuous path from (0,0) to the rest of the graph without including some points not-in-the-shape.

3. The mathematical notions of something "open" and "closed" are not mutually exclusive. The general idea of an open set is a shape that does not include its boundary (think of a solid disk, but the outside edge has is not included). The mathematical definition of a closed set is one in which the compliment (everything not in the set) is open. This leads to some sets and spaces being both open AND closed (sometimes called clopen).

4. A number can be "prime" in one setting, but not another. A prime number is a number which can only be written as a multiple of itself and a unit. For example, when considering the Real Integers (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, ...), the units are 1 and -1, so 5 is a prime because it can only be represented as 5=5*1 or 5=5*(-1)^{2N} (where N is a natural number). However, if we are looking at the complex numbers, then a single complex number is defined as a+bi where a and b are integers. 5 is not a Prime number here because (2+i)*(2-i) = 4 -2i + 2i - i^2 = 4 - i^2 = 5.

5. Modern mathematicians love abstracting concepts as much as possible. Topology is the abstract study of shapes (of which geometry is a consequence). By studying these abstract notions we can often discover surprising consequences that apply to many situations. However, sometimes this generalization gets can lead to confusion rather than clarity. A famous example of this is "A donut and a coffee cup are the same thing":

 7.5   March of the Ants
 9.8   Magic Maze

March of the Ants - This went fairly well. In my rules explanation I explained how battles generally aren't the most beneficial thing to do since it hurts both players. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand first turn someone decides to force a battle against me. It was a brutal uphill climb the rest of the game. But other people had larvae and card engines going by the time I was still trying to secure my own hex. We both ended up in distant 3rd and 4th place that game.

Other

I didn't play much. I did however glue these 30 very tiny hands to the Kingdom Death's Pheonix miniature. There were some that were a bit hard to place. I had my tweezers out and everything. I also successfully magnetized the wings. I primed the pieces and it should be ready to paint once I decide how to paint it. There are very nice examples online.

More KDM stuff - I got the expansions last week but still haven't finished figuring out the best way to keep everything organized.

I had oysters for the first time on Saturday at a restaurant. I don't know if it was the oysters but my stomach felt horrible the rest of the day.

Kokoro: Avenue of the Kodama
Via Nebula x2
The Colonists

I guess I can't say "it's a light week" when it includes the heaviest game in my collection, but not a whole lot of games played. The Colonists game is actually still in-progress - we left it set up in our game table and put the cover on to prevent the cats from knocking any bits over.

Next weekend is our FLGS flea market, so we're playing a couple of the "maybe sell this" games - Via Nebula is short enough that we did two games in a row, and decided that in a world where we own Whistle Stop and Wasteland Express Delivery Service, Via Nebula is not something that needs a place in our collection. I still think it's a very good game, but a bit too light for what we want out of a pick up and deliver.

The Colonists will almost certainly get sold. We want to finish the full four eras once before we decide for sure, but there's just not that much going on there to justify the time invested. I could play A Fest for Odin, Yokohama, or Le Havre in a fraction of the time and get a lot of the same enjoyment out of it. More is not always better, and Feast's amount of "more" is just about perfect for me.

All together, I think we've determined about 20 games that are on the chopping block at the moment, probably a few more as we get closer to the day of the sale. If previous flea markets are any indication, we'll successfully sell a bit more than half of those.

OMM: We're getting a puppy. I am concerned about available time for gaming, and about making sure I don't have games on the bottom shelves in case she ends up being a chewer. BUT, that is outweighed by PUPPY!!!!

HOLY COW! I just looked at the list of games I've played this week, and it's quite a few!

- Pandemic Legacy Season 2 - We played this once twice on Monday. Losing the first game and winning our second. I think we're getting ready to start June next.

- Twilight Struggle - In an effort not to forget out how play this I played the Android app version. That computer sure can kick my butt. I had almost completely forgotten how to play, but everything came back to me quickly. I actually did better in this game than any other. Happy about that progress!

- Keyflower - For Wednesday board game night we started with Keyflower. I really enjoy this one. Glad I picked it up a few years ago, and happy to be getting it played a little more frequently!

- Terraforming Mars - Got this one played again! I did okay. I played the miners and ramped up my heat production. The problem I had was I wasn't getting any cards to ramp up my tree production or really anything else. I struggled a good portion of this game due to card draws which was frustrating.

- Ticket to Ride: Germany - I downloaded this map for the Android app and quite liked it! Played two games during my lunch break one day.

- Azul - Got this and played it in the same week! This is some sort of record. Played during board game lunch day with only 2 of us. I enjoyed it, but think the choices would be more interesting with more players. Will play again for sure. Glad I grabbed it!

- Mice and Mystics - I played through Chapter 2 and 3 Friday night. I thought for sure I was going to lose Chapter 3. It was VERY close, but I somehow managed to sneak out a victory. Enjoying the story in this, but I'm not enjoying the insane amount of dice rolling when playing solo. It's just.. way too much.

- Dinosaur Island - A friend had a few of us over for games as a late birthday celebration for herself. This is one I wanted to try, but wasn't in much of a hurry for. It was fun. I did okay, but I think I was expecting the game to take longer. We played the short game, and I didn't have time to snag any of the achievements before other people and then the game was over. I would like to play this again at the longer game lengths.

- Downfall of Pompeii - I've now played this 6 times this year! Definitely going to be upgrading components just for fun. I managed to squeak out a victory at the very end of the game. My goal when playing this is to try to get all of my dudes as close to the exists as I can before really getting any of them out of the city.

- Alchemists - I hadn't really looked into this game or knew anything about it going into it. I was told I needed to download an app for it and rolled my eyes. However, I really enjoyed this game. Clue is one of my favorite games from when I was a kid, and this scratched that same itch with having to figure out what ingredients make what sort of potions. However, I got REALLY mad at myself when I used the wrong ingredient combination to sell to the merchant. I KNEW what ones I needed, and I messed it up. UGH! I will definitely play this one again though!

WHEW! That was seriously a lot of games! Sorry for the wall of text!

On My Mind
- I FINISHED BREATH OF THE WILD!! I got all 4 divine beasts and the master sword before going to face Gannon. I felt pretty good about the final battle going into it, but then I had to do the perfect block thing which was something I was never good at. Thankfully one of the abilities I got from beating a divine beast really helped with that!

- I finished the Cat's Cradle audio book and will be starting The Yellow Wallpaper and Other Stories on my way home today. I also started reading Agile Application Security for the book club that's been started at work. I'm about 65% through Kushiel's Avatar, and I'm still really enjoying it!

- In relation to the Agile book I'm reading for work I'm also studying for my CRISC certification. If you're not sure what that is and want to know you can find out more here. The scope of my job is taking a drastic turn due to a large re-organization the company is undertaking. I actually have no idea what my modified role will entail other than "reporting and project co-ordination". That's all they can tell us right now, but I'm honestly happy they're trying to fit us in rather than letting us all go since they're moving our actual jobs to India. So, yay for still having a job. Boo for it sounding like I'll be a project manager.

9   The Ravens of Thri Sahashri
 N/A   The Mind x2

It's been a light gaming year for us, since we've been busy with real life things.

Played The Ravens of Thri Sahashri again and won! Now we've won with each of of playing each role, so we opened up the first envelope. It'll take a while to be able to win now though, since we need to have 5 cards in the score pile (and we usually don't have any!). We need to get better at actually using the powers on the cards.

My parents came over and we played The Mind with them (using The Game cards, so just 2-99 instead of 1-100). I think the furthest we got was level 6. I'm really enjoying this game!

On My Mind
-We made successful bread! Loaf #9 was good in both taste and texture! And then I made my first bread yesterday (I kneaded it & shaped it for the first time). Not the best hobby to pick up when dieting though.
-Our restaurant's doing well. Some problems with service, but hopefully that improves (also the wait is super long).
-Japan is in less than 2 weeks!! Aaahhh! I need to finalize plans and get directions for everything! I'm pretty sure we're good with everything that we need to reserve ahead of time.
-I went to the DMV last week and it was the worst DMV experience I've ever had (out of not too many). I wasn't able to get an appointment at any of the DMV's within 30 miles of where I live until after my license expired (I tried to schedule the day I got my renewal notice), so I tried for walk-in. I went to one DMV before it opened and waited in line in the rain for an hour and a half, and then heard another person leaving say something about the computers being down. So then a few people in line asked the people working there about it, and the people working there said that the computers were down and they couldn't process anyone. But they weren't planning on telling everyone who was waiting in line in the rain outside! So then I left and went to another DMV. Got a number after an hour and a half, and they didn't say what the wait was, so I waited there, and then finally got called up 4 hours later. So I basically spent an entire 8 hour day at the DMV.

 9   Dinosaur Island
6   The Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game x3 NEW!
 8   Gloomhaven x3

Dinosaur Island - I did not enjoy this play of it. Less the game, more a player. It was a 4-player short game. I did okay. Third place, but lost by only two points. I made a mistake of going for a big dino in a short game, especially when one of the objectives was getting 6 dinos. If the game lasted one more round, I would have destroyed everyone. One player was particularly snarky while we were playing. He just had a bad attitude, and was throwing a lot of shit at my way. Not trash-talk, but with real disdain at me. It was the same guy I was playing a game with when I had a panic attack a year-and-a-half ago. It was a real shit experience, I almost ditched the game after a few cutting remarks. It was the sort of shit that really fuels my social anxiety.

Castles of Burgundy: The Dice Game - This is a fantastic translation of Castles of Burgundy into a Roll & Write game. We read the rules, taught the rules, and played it twice in under an hour. I can see myself playing this solo, while sitting back watching TV, or whatever. I like it more than the Card game, because it’s a distilled CoB experience in regards to both space and time. I will own all three, and I’m okay with that. CoB is the best experience overall, the Card game is the game distilled down into 30 minutes, and this brings it down into 10-15 minutes, each sacrificing complexity in return for speed after its chronological predecessor. Though, I think both the Card and Dice game tackled different parts of the CoB feel, with the Dice having more emphasis on spatial “placement”

Gloomhaven - We normally do 2 scenarios, but this week we crunched through three of them. Made good progress, and really got a huge sense/feel of progression for my character. Reached level 5 with my Mindthief. Level 5 is a real game changer for this class, as it introduces a card that makes me rethink all of the cards that were fairly crap. I really enjoy playing my character, but I'm also ready to try something new. I'm at least 3 scenarios away from unlocking a new class.

OMM:

1. We had an early easter family time thing on Sunday. We made lots of food. All our guests ate like birds., thought he food was delicious. We have TONS of leftovers to plow through.

2. The girlfriend wife is having a hard time sleeping. Her vomiting has increased tremendously in the last couple of days. Baby's size has gone to a more moderate and average level than where she was a couple weeks ago.

3. A side of her vomiting all the time is that I haven't been able to really get good sleep in a few days, and today I am a total mess. I'm spilling coffee all over, my reaction time is super slow, and I got into work almost 90 minutes later than I normally do. I really need to find a way to adjust to low sleep, soon.

4. Work has been a serious pain in the ass. We've had a very troublesome project that I can't talk about at all. But the real point is, I need a vacation, badly. It's been nearly a year since we went to Disneyland, and even that wasn't all that restful.

5. About 5 or so weeks until I'm a father. After trying since DECEMBER, I got word back about how much time off I have available. While I'm sure it won't be a real vacation, I'll be able to take off 4 weeks from work. I'm feeling totally drained right now.

No full plays of anything. Instead, I spent 14 hours in a car over the weekend in pursuit of geek haven at WonderCon in Anaheim.

There, I was able to demo a copy of the Grimm Forest, which apparently is from the same designer as March of the Ants, which is cool.

And frankly, I'm not convinced that the gameplay will be something that I would particularly enjoy, but the theme and production quality is really is what draws me to games (moreso than most). The artwork is done by the same person as Santorini, and at first glance, it looks like they do a decent job of representation in the artwork. Plus, it comes with gametrayz organizers and miniatures. MINIATURES. SO MUCH STUFF that they didn't really need and they're now offering at retail.

Mechanisms wise, it seems fairly straightforward, I'm just worried about the prevalence of the Take-That! cards. There's stuff like a Dragon, that lets you destroy all someone's resources if they share the same location, and a Big Bad Wolf that lets you destroy a portion of someone's house if it's straw or wood, since you build them from floors to walls to roofs. Most cards seem to be location specific, so there is an element of counter-play there, but I'm still not convinced how it would play out over a full game.

But. . . the artwork and theme was enough for me to take a chance on it, so now I'm gonna try to get this to the table a bit to see how I (and others) take to it.
