Flamme Rouge - Tour de France 2018
- Ryan KeaneUnited States
I have included all 19 standard stages, and the one team time trial stage, but have omitted the individual time trial stage (pending good ITT rules for Flamme Rouge). To create each stage, I take the last 70 km of each stage and try to break it down into flats, ascents, and descents, with each 1 km of real track equaling 1 space of FR track.
In addition to the letter tile sequence and stage image from the FR Companion app, I also provide the breakdown of each terrain section. The numbers indicate which space from 0 to 71 that terrain changes to a new type: F = flat, A = ascent, D = descent, and L = finish line.
Stage 9 and 20 require Peloton as designed. You can use homemade markers to indicate the changes to your base game tiles, like indicating where the no-slipstreaming cobble sections start and end (trying to indicate which spaces are single lane is more work), or alter the stage designs. The cobble on the real Champs Elysees is not that bad, but stage 9 really needs the cobblestone sections to be distinctive.
These tracks are designed to simulate the real Tour de France stages, rather than to produce the most interesting single stage tracks given the mechanisms of Flamme Rouge. However, I think they provide a variety of interesting tactical options. Rather than playing individual stages, I recommend playing a consecutive subset of the stages as a short Tour, or all 20 for a true Grand Tour.
For an easier attempt at a 20-stage Tour, I would suggest incorporating "rest days." If you're playing solo, allow yourself to remove half exhaustion rounded down after stages 9 and 15. If you're playing multiplayer, allow players to remove all exhaustion after stages 9 and 15.
I am providing Points Classification and Mountain Classification scoring for each stage based on Vincent's system (https://boardgamegeek.com/article/28684549) if you would like to track these for each cyclist in addition to General Classification and Team Classification using Benoit's Flamme Rouge Companion app.
I hope you enjoy trying these and I appreciate any feedback you may have.
