When a holiday comes around, do you feel any desire to play games which are thematically related to that holiday? Or is there any other game you always play at Easter, Christmas, New Year, birthdays or other such occasions?

Do you go on easter egg hunts? Is that a thing where you live? I don't reckon it's a brilliant plan to hide chocolate eggs in the tropics, but maybe there are some stories to tell.

My most played game was Fill or Bust, which my kids discovered and have demanded frequently. The Mind comes in a close second, with another bunch of very memorable plays and much laughter.
On Friday I had a major gaming session (almost 11 hours, with only a dinner break to interrupt it), which has become rare for me. I managed to try a number of recently famous games and had a great time altogether.

My ancient parents were staying with us this weekend and the weather was absolutely foul, so we spent most of the time snug and warm in front of the fire, eating, reading, chatting, knitting and playing games. They often play Upwords and Boggle, but that's about it, and they usually moan (playfully) about learning our 'complicated' games. However, they did grudgingly admit to enjoying playing, and my dad even requested to play TransAmerica a second time, hence it's status as GOTY.

Trans America x 2
Ave Caesar x 2
Money x 2
Njet! x 1
Bananagrams x 1
Boggle x 1
6 Nimmt x 1
Apples to Apples x 2
Race for the Galaxy x 1
Neuroshima Convoy x 1
Kingdom Builder x 1
Unpublished prototype x 1 (finished but I need to construct something to make the game mechanism work more slickly, which is a pain)

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

N/A   GKR: Heavy Hitters NEW! x2
N/A   Fire in the Sky: The Great Pacific War 1941-1945 NEW!

Managed to catch up with my (semi)regular wargames opponent today. His little guy is 11 months old and neither of us has much time for cardbaord related activities on weekends. However, with a four day weekend we managed to find a spare day which was good.

He taught me a game I have been wanting to play for ages, Fire in the Sky: The Great Pacific War 1941-1945. I was the Americans as it's supposed to be the easier option. Needless to say, I had managed to suffer a Japanese automatic victory in turn six. I like the system but made a few key mistakes like not reinforcing Guadalcanal and putting too much effort into moving the older slower battleships that survived Pearl Harbour but chewed up the transport points.

Still, good fun and a game I'd definitely play again now I have a small handle on how it works.

After that we were up for something light and silly. My opponent had recently received his KickStarter pledge for GKR: Heavy Hitters and we played two games. Not bad (definitely over-produced, but that's nothing new for KickStarter) but it had a few inconsistencies in gameplay that made me thing that more playtesting should have been done. Should also say that the KS-exclusive cards with the refelctive metallic effects were simply horrid.

Not sure how it'd play with more than two, I rather suspect that alliances would be fluid but once a front runner emerge they would be targeted though that would depend on the players. Overall, not bad but not one I regret electing not to back.

Sad to say, my wargames opponent is moving away at the end of May. I hope to get in a couple more sessions before he departs.

All of our games were with the kids this past week. Of those that we played, the most successful was National Geographic Expedition, which looks and plays like TransAmerica's messier cousin. Everyone commented on how we should play this more than once a year.

Everyone was tired on the night that we played Rhino Hero and Tchu Tchu Train. I don't think we made around the table once with Rhino Hero, but it was fun and nobody minded. Tchu Tchu train is a print and play from Gary Kim, the designer of Abraca...what? and Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise. Like those games, this is light enough for families to play, but it has enough subtle strategy to make it challenging to win. Looking forward to playing this again.

Catchup is an amazing game, and now we may get the opportunity to play this more often; I used to be unbeatable, but O took me down twice out of the four games we played.

On the other hand, he HATED Tombouctou and quit after the first round. We reset and played with four, which may actually be better since it's shorter. N, the girls and I loved the deduction aspect, and the commodity speculation scoring is very clever. Hope we can find a way to play this again soon.

The week of 26 March to 1 April:

As me and my brothers were moving things about in my parents garage we found the old Bob-board (as it's called here in Iceland - it's listed here on BGG as Korona, a variant of Carrom). We decided to try it out and it's still so much fun! I haven't played it in something like 20-30 years! Otherwise there was much playing of games during Easter as usual.

Rather better for me, game-wise over the last week. On Saturday we got a message from friends in the next town over asking if we had any plans for the Easter weekend; we hadn't really, other than a Sunday roast lunch, so we invited them over for lunch, leading to a lovely afternoon of chatting and some light gaming.

7   This Town Ain't Big Enough for the 2-4 of Us x2 - At work, I've been slowly racking up plays of this neat little microgame.
7   Keyper - I got out to a localish games club on Friday and spent the evening playing this; it's good, and extremely clever, but didn't wow me in the way that Keyflower did.
6   Ruse - Not much to this game, but it can be plenty of fun when you are roleplaying the cards as they come up.
8   The Resistance: Avalon x2 - Miss B really wanted to play; for five people it's not ideal, but we still had good fun.
7   Exploding Kittens x2 - This was brought along by our visiting friends and I was expecting to not like it much, but I was very pleasantly surprised and would happily play again if it came to the table. Some neat aspects, including the steady ramping of tension through the game.
5   Bears vs Babies - Also brought by our friends, and this one really fell flat for me; there are some neat ideas, but it is a solid "meh!" for me.
7.5   Legendary Creatures - A Kickstarter game that arrived a few days ago, and Miss B was up for a play; our first play went pretty slowly, largely as Miss B was intently trying to analyse her options, but it was fun and engaging for both of us.

We were on holiday in Lanzarote last week, so the games we played were all card games, from the selection I took with us. Hero Realms was definitely the hit of the holiday with the boys, but they mainly played it together. We also introduced them both to Innovation, after they saw us play and wanted to try it. They both seemed to enjoy it, but we'll have to see whether or not they request it again!

Gaming with my husband:

10   Star Realms: Colony Wars x6
 10   Hero Realmsx4
 9   7 Wonders Duel x3
 10   Jump Drive x3
 10   Innovation x2
10   Race for the Galaxy x2

Gaming with my children:

 9   Cardline: Animals x3
 7   Fan Tan x3
 6   Quit x3
 10   Innovation x2
6   Angry Birds: The Card Game
 10   Hero Realms
 9   Bohnanza
 8   Sushi Go!

Haggis 2p x1

Offal oft is overlooked
and thrown out instead of cooked
but if you'd rifle through the squish
you'd find points hidden in that dish
--
Every time I think it's been too long. That's because this game is awesome. The exquisite tension present in when to use my wilds is breathtaking. If we had more time I would be playing this with Megan over and over again.

Star Plus 2p x1

despite the fact that they are balls
of burning gas: big fiery squalls
they really are quite simple things
mere playthings zinging by in rings
--
Again, not a bad game, not a great game, but a really simple gateway climber, with more choices than initially appear, although by more I mean, eh, like 3-or-4. I would definitely use this as a beginning card for non-gaming co-workers.

Gangsi 5p x1

Hop on pop
and steal his qi
to make a swap
he dies for thee
--
This game is silly, but it went over a treat with 5, and there's a little bit more than I had supposed initially. The Gangsi won, having devoured me 3 times, and everyone else less. With the full complement it's like a claustrophobic game of pac-man.

Hit Z Road 1p x.3

tried it once, to help instruct us
baby cried, corpse interruptus
--
Literally just set it up to learn, baby woke up around the third turn. Thus it happens. Seems like it'll be fun.

Sakura Arms 2p x1

grab a sword and dash and slash
or parasol or gun instead
build arsenal and in a flash
you'll strike your foes down cold and dead
--
Not a bad little fighting game. The yomi, interestingly, comes in the pregame build, I think. The tutorial, which we played, simply showed us the results of that build. There's spacing and an interesting take on SFV's V-Trigger
