I was inspired to create this list after finally getting to play "Through the Ages". It's a games that's been near the top of my "Want to play" list for years and I was finally able to get it played this weekend at a local gaming Convention.

This list is all about popular games that seem to check off all your boxes in terms of things you like in games, but still seem to miss the mark for you for some reason.

A little back story... My introduction to modern board games came via the PC game, "Sid Meier's Civilization". My wife bought me a copy of Fantasy Flight's Sid Meier's CIV board game, knowing that I loved the video game. It took me several years to get that game played, but it did lead me to an interest in Modern Board Games. More specifically I was drawn to medium to heavy Euro games.

So, "Through the Ages: A new story of civilization" seems to be a detailed card based abstraction of the video game, cloning the theme almost exactly, while providing many of the same types of decisions and imparting a similar sense of growth as your civilization grows over time.

I SHOULD LOVE this game. It seems to have it all, but I just kind of, sort of like it. And maybe that's being a little generous. It's hard to put my finger on, but I think it's my euro sensibilities. I don't really mind that it's long, fiddly or complex, I think it's the large amount of randomness and luck combined with the fact that it's such a long game.

Whatever it is, I don't seem to love this one as much as others do.

I've played this one a few times now and I really just don't get this one. There are lots of things I think I like. Resource conversion, engine building, spatial elements that I typically love, it even has really nice components and attractive artwork. I even think I like the scoring system based on completing multiple objectives first. But everytime I play this game it just seems like a slow boring slog of tiny actions without any real tension or interesting decisions.

I SHOULD love this game. It seems like a fairly complex euro game with lots of choices, which is typically my sweet spot in gaming. I'm sure it's not that the game is bad, people obviously love it. But for whatever reason, this one just doesn't click for me at all.

This is supposed to be great as a two player game. My wife and I played it and found it a bit dull and the components rather unappealing. We tried a couple more times but it never won us over.

Great art and design in general, but the losing a card every shuffle mechanism, and the cards not even being that fun to use, hold this one back for me.

I know it's sacreligous to speak negatively about ol' gloomy here, but I flat out disliked this game. I felt like I was barely doing anything on my turn. I also felt like a lot of the minor rules (like you cant grab loot if the last monster is dead) are wtf territory.

It feels like all of the bad parts of an old school JRPG. To each their own though. We are in the age of frustration = fun, for some reason. Looking at you Souls series.

I don't like dungeon crawls but if one game would redeem Runebound it would be this. Nice fantasy theme that's mature but not immaturely so (debatable I know), RPG heavy elements. I finally tried to play it. It was such a bust and full of fluff. It tries to be everything and therefore fails at all of it. It's the embodiment of your friend recommending a tv show and just saying "It's good."

I thought I'd like this game after my first play of it, but after a couple more plays, I know I'll never play it again. The winner seems obvious maybe 1 or 2 turns after the first bank bust, and the game is just too long to have issues like that. I'm usually okay with "mean" games too, but the pvp in this game can cripple you permanently. This isn't fun, it's just frustrating. It has all the marks of a game I should like, but I hate it.
