I'm a harsh culler. If a game doesn't get played, even if I like it, I get rid of it. Almost all of the time, even in cases of things I liked, I don't miss what's gone; I still own plenty of other games.

But every now and then I think, 'huh, I should have kept that!' and end up re-acquiring something. Hasn't happened often, but here are times it has.

WHAT THIS IS: Games you got rid of, then missed, and got again.

WHAT THIS IS NOT: Games you re-bought because of a new edition, games you own multiple copies of, games you gave away then re-bought for yourself again (knowing you'd do so all along).

Had this, along with the first expansion. I played the game often and liked it, but I guess I disliked the expansion enough that I got rid of the whole thing? I don't remember. Anyway, a pal of mine brought it out not long ago and reminded me that yes, I enjoy this, it does something different, and I'd like to play it more. I grabbed a copy in an auction and played it the other night. It's nice to have it again.

This kind of doesn't count. I liked it all right, but ended up putting it up for sale. My pal James (pronoblem) bought it from me. When he passed away unexpectedly, I ended up buying it back from his "estate". There were a couple other games I re-got this way (Meuterer, Gheos). Had James not passed away, or had it gone to someone I didn't know, I probably would not have re-bought it.

I bought this game and really enjoyed it. But then it wasn't getting played, so I got rid of it. But I still enjoyed the game... and when I saw it available for a steal I bought it again. Then I sold it for a tidy profit. But that was okay because one of my friends still owned a copy. Mr. Harsh Culler himself in fact, who then decided to cull his own copy of Ground Floor... which I picked up.

And somewhere in there I had a bet with another friend who as a condition of losing was supposed to give me his copy of Ground Floor, but as it's several years later and I still haven't gotten that copy, I doubt it'll ever happen.

So I've gotten this game three, possibly four, times now.

I think Trajan was our third or fourth board game purchase (after Ticket to Ride and Pandemic).

We were not ready for it at all. We were confused by the rules, the amount of chits and pieces was intimidating, and the strategy made no sense to us. Ended up trading it away after two or three plays.

Recently, we reacquired it through trade after finding a love for Feld games and have fallen in love with Trajan. Super glad we gave it another shot and we did learn a valuable lesson about knowing your limits from that first experience.

I've done this a few times. Puerto Rico etc.

The one I want to mention is Terra Mystica. When Gaia Project was announced as "Upgraded Terra Mystica with the cult track more organically incorporated into game play," it seemed like a no-brainer to get rid of Terra Mystica --after all I don't need both games. It turns out I don't love the production quality of Gaia (flimsy board, etc.) and the game is a bit more complicated ("fiddly") than Terra Mystica --which is already fiddly enough for me. So I no longer want Gaia Project and would like to get TM back.

I brought this game home from GenCon when it was first released. played it with some friends there and thought i liked it. Got it home... Nope. Traded it away. Son expressed some interest, waned before the trade even arrived. Traded away again. Since I have a hard time getting to play games with my son, I read that this plays well solo. traded for it again. Set it up, got halfway through a game, and put it away. Still nope. I just don't like it. Current copy is on my "for trade" list if anyone is interested.

No idea when or where I lost track of my original copy.

Remembered the game while playing Heroquest a couple of years ago so found a cheap copy on ebay. Have replaced the dragon counters with appropiate MtG cards. Still a fun game.

I knew there was one I'd forgotten about! Got this from Maciek at some gaming event (I think it was a Conn or Fal Con), played it a few times. It didn't seem to hit with my group, so I sold it. A few years later I played it again with Maciek at a con, realized I enjoyed it, and bought it from him again.

I bought this when I first got into gaming because it was a classic. But I never ended up bringing it to game days, so I got rid of it. Then I went through a "One of my friends really like train games... I'll try to get into train games" phase and rebought it. And then I realized that train games are just okay. And that everyone I would play this with already has it. Except another friend, who ended up buying my copy.

I've done this for a few games, but the most notable is Rise of Empires. I bought it at Gen Con and got it signed by Martin Wallace, but ended up selling it off at the Jack Vasel auction after finding it fiddly at the time and hard to get to the table.

I rebought it a few years ago and it has become an annual event for me to get this played.

It's fiddly, takes forever to set up, and the end game can be a little odd, but I've had some memorable experiences with it as alliances form in the game and players go from building up their own engines to trying to claw their way to the top.

It's probably my favorite civ game at this point.

Further Note: This is the only game that I leave in the box unsorted and unbagged. I just sweep the contents back into the box to sit for another year.

This was my first hobby game. I got the first edition when it came out (ordered via an add in Starlog magazine) and played the heck out of it, adding the expansions as they came out. Years later after getting back into gaming, I found that it had gotten moldy sitting in the basement for too long so had to toss it all out.

I later thrifted a copy of the 2nd edition for a few bucks. That copy never hit the table though. I played someone else's copy at a convention and found the game play really didn't fit my tastes any more. So I sold off my thrifted copy for a small profit and feel I am done with it.

Bought this last year, played a dozen games solo and really enjoyed it. I especially like the hard science fiction theme. Got rid of it thinking I’ll never get to play it with other people as it’s a bit too complex and long for my family and friends. Fast forward to March 2018 and I read Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson and it really made me want to play the game again. Now it’s back in my collection.

Around 25 years ago, I traded a bunch of games I didn't play to a game store for some minis I wanted to paint. One of them was a mint, unplayed copy of this. At some point I remembered that it existed, and reacquired a copy around 6 or so years ago.

Still unplayed. blush

I haven't yet, but I'm seriously considering re-buying this game. I sold my first copy after two plays after we determined that it was too long and a certain strategy was seemingly overpowered.

After more thought and time spent in the strategy forums, I've deemed my strategy assumption to be largely false and I think the game length issue could be solved by repeated plays and less AP-prone players.

I have many games I wondered for years about before getting them, and then selling them off. There's only one title which meets the requirements for this list: Stephenson's Rocket. First I bought it at a clearence sale at the publisher's without really knowing what it was like. Noone wanted to play, and so I sold it on sometime later. A year or two ago my interest grew again as I understood far better what the game was about, and so re-aquired a copy. These are very easy to come by here in the Netherlands. (Link is for the Dutch equivalent of craigslist.)

Did I play yet? No. But I've been extremely busy with other things in the meantime, so perhaps once it all settles down that I can put the game through its paces.

I originally bought this second hand off a friend in my gaming group. Played it a casually a fair bit with another friend, who eventually said he found the game too stressful. (Not because I was totally in his head with my Jinteki brain damage deck, not at allwhistle)

With no prospect of another rival to play against, I sold my collection to a guy on a Facebook game selling group.

Fast forward to last summer at UK Games Expo. Bumped into the friend who originally sold me his set at the bring and buy stall. He was buying a big Netrunner collection, because he regretted selling his copy to me. I was picking up a cheap core set because I regretted selling the copy that he had sold to me.

After the expo, I saw someone selling a decent sized collection on the Facebook game sales group. I commented and a deal was struck. When I went into messenger to pm him, I saw a load of messages about selling a Netrunnner collection from a couple of years before. Only I was selling to him.

That’s right folks, I was buying back THE EXACT SAME COLLECTION that I sold to some stranger on the Internet three years previously.

Now, anyone want to play Netrunnner? Still need an opponent...

Bought it from high recommendations. Especially hearing of how fantastic a 2 player game it is, since that's where the majority of our plays come from.

It sat around still in shrink til we bought a house. Culled $500 worth of games from the collection to help pay funds, this was one of the affected. Hubby had no desire to play, thought it looked really dry. I thought all the different scoring tiles would be difficult to teach, but this game still had me really excited about it. I let it go, cause money desperately needed.

Bit later, Target had another of their buy 2, get 1 free sales. Picked it up again. Watching Rahdo's runthrough again had me motivated to play it. And damn it, everyone still highly recommends it. I'm determined to play it this time. Printed out a couple of player aids & laminated to assist in teaching, bought the geek store bags. It's all pimped out, thus it stays this time. I have recently picked up the dice version, to reach free shipping on an order, and to potentially solo. So maybe I'll start with that version before going with the full one...
