Hello friends! Welcome to the May thread. I've been displaying WWS (wargame withdrawal symptoms) recently after a bit of a lean spell so I'm desperate for a fresh month of vicarious wargame thrills. It's been rough - don't let me down!

So, tell us what you're playing - it doesn't matter if it's solo or opposed, face-to-face or digital, trad or fangled. If you can crush your enemies, we want to hear about it!

Subscribe here to receive notification of the new list each month, or else!

Still on Kai's first run out using this system so it's very much a learning game. He's nailed the rules though.

I'm the Allies and I've been making moves on New Guinea. It was going well until the 3rd Aussie and XIV American corps got biffed at Wewak. Now we're on the back foot and feeling fragile. Expecting a mauling in the presumably forthcoming counter punch.

Battle of Towton, largest battle in the game.

In our game the lancastrians did a much better job of managing their two infantry battles than the Yorkists. They were able to cycle reinforcements in effectively where the two Yorkist battles got entangled with each other and when Norfolk appeared he was unable to really get involved as the front line couldn’t create him a gap.
From gallery of RAVENBURG

Pretty substantial victory for the red roses in the end.

I received this for Christmas last year and decided to give it a try partly due to a request from a subscriber to my Bare Bones Wargaming program on youtube.

I've played and enjoyed Where There Is Discord: War in the South Atlantic but Thatcher seems to focus more on the whole land combat whereas WTD concentrates the land war on the landings only. I have enjoyed the designers (Ben Madison) other two games in this series and that is part of the reason I picked it up.

Just started this game from Battles Magazine #4 (2010) that I finally found last month.

I'm not anti-area but for some reason, area games strike me as more game, less simulation, than hex-&-counters. Unfair, I know. But there it is.

From gallery of gkeizer

1st Belorussian Front storms the Seelow Heights -- the rouge-shaded areas are the rough terrain -- but has yet to break into the clear and head for Berlin (out of the shot upper left). Historically, it wasn't until April 19, or Turn 3, that Zhukov's forces ground through the final German defense line on the Heights. Here, it's the first impulse of Turn 2.

Got Light Division in a trade with a buddy awhile back. Designed by one of my faves, and it's a very interesting What If. Counters are punched and rounded, first scenario set up and ready to roll. Finished about half the rules, which clock in at around 20 pages. That's definitely short by today's standards.

Couple of things stand out:

thumbsdown The map is not great. Functional, but the color choice is pretty bad.

thumbsup the counters are clean and fairly easy to see and read.

thumbsup thumbsup the rulebook. So far, I've been impressed with how easy they are to read. Everything's laid out in a nice, orderly manner, with the rules being explained clearly. Not a chore to get through at all. I'm more than halfway through the rules, and I haven't any trouble with them so far.

Recently, I've played some of my older games, to see if they're worth holding onto. Not many have stood the test of time (IMHO), and they've gone to better homes. But I'm excited about playing LD. It's too early to tell, but if the rules are any indication, this may stay in the collection.

Just finished one scenario with one of my PBEM opponents, and now we’re looking to move on to one of the intermediate scenarios, Saga of the 6th Airborne. Need to bone up on those airdrop rules.

Also have a PBEM game going of the Nemesis scenario, pitting my Canadians against the 12th SS rushing in to stop the advance inland from Juno. Thanks to some horrendous rolls during the landing of the initial waves, I took some heavy losses on the beaches that may hurt later on. But it’s only 0900 on the 6th, and there’s a lot of carnage still to come. Playing with dis guy, the nutjob of the family who went into the Army:

Just kicked off scenario 8. Didn't deploy my armor quite deep enough in the woods, so an aggressive scouting move by a Panther has revealed some. Inbound fire coming momentarily.

My Western allies are blockaded and are getting bombed via precision bombing from the Axis while the Soviets are sitting on their hands and watching. Not much I can do but absorb the blows--I'm already knocked out of contention, I would think.

Board Game: Quatre Batailles en Espagne
Just read through the rules of this, and they seemed fairly straightforward until I attempted to implement the command rules for Ocana. Then I found that I couldn't understand how they worked for the Spaniards. I hope that the query I left of the game forum will provide me with the answer.

An attractive looking game, which on the face of it looks quite simple. Looking forward to playing Ocana with this system and then switching back to Zucker's Library of Napoleonic Battles game to play the same battle there.

Well after a month or two of going through the rules, discussion, short scenario counter pushing, mining of the sites for AARs, reading of Stanley Karnow's excellent book on the topic and a late night viewing of the long version of Apocalypse Now we are set up and ready to start tonight...

I am playing the US led Free World forces and

will be the Communist NLF...

Various Viet Cong units are scattered across the map and a number of South Vietnamese army units are garrisoning important cities..there are two regiments of US Marines up in Da Nang..

South Vietnamese morale is low with the leadership of the governing junta disunited and of dubious loyalty..much of the population across the provinces and regions is under Communist control...

President Johnson has decided to commit massive US military forces and material support in an effort to prevent this domino from falling...

The blue pieces are Viet Cong units some of which are stronger than others and some are mere political cadres..all represent a Communist presence gaining control of the population..

The yellow pieces are units of the South Vietnamese army..most are fairly weak..some are VERY weak..all are confined at present to garrisoning the important towns and cities leaving the rest to the VC..

Towards the north on the coast a tall stack of units are the battalions of the two Marine regiments at Da Nang..

An important part of the game is a kind of sub-game that represents the machinations of the South Vietnamese leadership the loyalty of (or lack thereof) which has vital implications for the reliability of the army and Vietnamese morale as a whole..all SVN units have some kind of leader controlling them..divisions have their own leader (1 star) who are subordinate to a corps leader (2 star) who are in turn subordinate to the Vietnamese president (3 star)..all are members of a particular faction and all are subject to changes in loyalty..SVN army units may become unreliable (ineffective) and therefore useless for anything but defensive missions..sackings and coups will be possible and in some cases desirable...

Below is a photo of the SVN Leaders Display which shows their various levels of loyalty at the start of play (determined with a die roll)..the higher up the scale the the more loyal the leader..as can be seen most are reasonably loyal while some are borderline while one (the Air Force commander) is at the bottom of his scale and therefore deemed disloyal..he will have to be replaced (sacked)...
