I really enjoy all of these games. For various reasons I have bought a second copy and dare not part with them. For some of them the first set just wore out or I expect them to soon. For other games I have a second copy because I use the extra components to add variety and the ability to add more players.

Settlers of Catan – I actually have three sets of Settlers. Bought Mayfair’s 1st edition. Then their 2nd edition came out and it had four different colored sets of pieces AND rules for 6 and 8 players. Couldn’t pass that up. Then Seafarers came out, but only in the German edition. I couldn’t wait for Mayfair, so I bought the German Settlers with Seafarers, so the tiles would match. I have Cities & Knights in both languages, because again I couldn’t wait. Problem is the Mayfair edition uses 3rd edition style and they don’t match the 1st or 2nd edition. Why they did that I’ll never know?? So, I use the English cards and calendars, but the German tiles. I’ll have the same problem if they ever publish Das Buch in English. The game is just too good to have patience and wait for it in English.

Up Front – I wore out the first set of cards. Bought a second set of cards thru Avalon Hill. Then bought a second Up Front game. I’ve also got two copies of Banzai and Desert War. Why? I mostly play Up Front these days with 4 players. Two teams of two players. You can attack diagonally against the second player’s squad. Loads of fun.

Titan: The Arena – We love Titan:TA, but we usually have 6 players. What to do? Bought another game. For four of the creatures I added an extra 9,7,3 and 1 card. For the other four I added an extra 8,6,4 and 2 card. That’s 32 cards, enough for another player. Works beautifully.

Royal Turf – Three of the same races got boring. Bought another game to add variety. Here’s what we do: Race #1) Regular rules. Race #2) Toss two of each number chit in an opaque cup (use extra chits from the other set). Each player draws one chit and may play it according to the following rules: 0 chit (Held Back) - play any time to force the horse that is moving to reduce it’s speed by 2 spaces. 1 chit (Bad/Good Luck) – play any time after the dice roll to allow/force the player to roll again. 2 chit (Whip) - play any time to force the horse that is moving to increase it’s speed by 2 spaces. Race #3) Regular rules, double payouts. Using both sets of betting chips (8 chips), players may secretly decide which chips to use that add up to 4. So, a player could choose the standard 0,1,1,2 set of chips. Or a player could choose 1,1,1,1 or 0,0,2,2. This adds a little more strategy to the game.

Advanced Squad Leader – I play THE game almost every Friday night with 2-5 other guys. I have an extra copy of every core module (#1 - #11), Annuals, Red Barricades and the rulebook stashed at my sisters house. I’m a computer guy. Backup, backup, backup. So sue me!

Wrasslin – Wore out the first set of cards. Bought a second game. The Tag Team matches are sooooo fun. Great with 6 players. Two players per team, two teams in the ring. Winners stay in the ring. You don’t want to be watching, so your team will do anything to stay in there.

Cosmic Encounters – Bought the Mayfair edition with More Cosmic Encounter. Couldn’t pass up the Hasbro edition with all those gorgeous pieces. I only wish there was a 5-6 player expansion for the Hasbro edition in the future. We’ll then use the Mayfair cards and the Hasbro pieces.

Carabande – One set is not enough. Gotta have that second game for a bigger course. Two sets and the Carabande Action Set is just right.

Win, Place & Show – Wore out the first set. Ran out of tickets, the track was getting worn, a couple of those fragile horses were broken, the programs were all marked up with player’s comments/scoring/check marks, etc. Bought that second game. Also, thank goodness for the second racing form that was published in The General.

Divine Right – Bought the original copy when it was released. Had to buy the 25th Anniversary copy didn’t I? Still has those totally annoying diplomacy rules where you need to roll a 6 to get a country to join your side. Roll those 6’s a lot and often, and you win big. You don’t and you’re out. Still haven’t figured out the perfect house rule to fix that, but I’ll keep trying. Beautiful map with good looking counters even 25 years later.
