This is my fifth year running a unit in my Literacy classes that allows my students to create Tabletop games. I used the Lucy Calkins Writing Program and the Notice & Note Reading Curriculum to create an end-of-year culminating unit where my students had to write a narrative that went with their game, wrote an instructional booklet for an informative writing piece, and created an argumentative presentation on their finished game. These are the three types of writing they did over the year and I felt Tabletop games could give them a proper outlet for demonstrating what they learned. They used their reading skills for research, feedback, and assessing their own directions.

I have two Literacy classes of sixth graders (11-12-year-olds). I have 42 students total. My students worked in groups of 2, with two groups going solo (the first time this has happened) to help balance out the odd number of students. The students were allowed to choose their partners.

We only had 7 weeks to work on this project. The drive these students had while creating these games in that amount of time is admirable.

They created their components digitally and used other materials that were available in the classroom.

In the early phases of the project, the students played several games to familiarize themselves with different types of games and mechanics (no roll-and-move games), as well as learn how to read directions and see examples of direction formats. Then, to align with certain Calkins-style-teachings, they were asked to choose a Mentor Game (like a Mentor Text). This game they could have chosen for any reason. I encouraged them to pick a mentor game that they liked the directions booklet the best for, so that they could have a reference when writing their own directions booklet. Since we had less than a Quarter to get the project done, we didn't get to spend tons of time playing games and learning all about game mechanics, so some of the students ended up doing skins of games. If we felt something was too much of a skin, we encouraged them to make changes that would alter the style and make the game more unique. In the end, it was the students' choice to do what they wanted to do.

Their games were created with help from myself and my husband (as the Game Consultant).

These are their final write-ups on their games (not their actual directions booklets).Students also learned to do the coding, so some might look awkward, but it's the first time they've done it.

They are looking for feedback and comments on their work (not the coding). Please remember that these are children and keep comments clean and meaningful. I will be sharing all feedback with the students and I will be asking them to reply as time permits.

I want to thank my husband, who has spent countless volunteer hours in my classroom (and outside of it) helping my students and guiding them through this arduous process.

NOTE: We had some major camera issues and ended up having to use subpar cameras on the Chromebooks and some student phones. Hopefully you can still see their pictures.

I will be at GenCon this year sharing information on my Lucy Calkins/Tabletop Game Unit. If you're interested in learning more about the details of what the classroom activity was like, please message me.

Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to look at these games. If you have questions or want to ask more about the games, please feel free to message me. The students are very excited to see what kind of responses they get on their games!

Dino Mania by Gamer101

Number of Players:
2 to 6 players

Game Mechanics:
The game mechanics that are used in Dino Mania include betting, take that, and card drafting.

Objective:
The objective of the game is to try and get the most points, while trying to survive the meteors.

1. Players will want to protect themselves from meteors.
2. Players will also want to try and give meteors to other players so they can get rid of all their dinosaurs.
3. They will also want to try and get the most points before the deck of cards run out.

If players can fulfill those three objectives, they will have a very great chance of winning the game.

Short Description:

Dino Mania is a 2-6 player game for ages 7+. It is a dino filled game of playing cards, battling and jeopardizing other players chances of winning. Players get to place down cards, making their dinosaurs stronger and more powerful. They will also get the opportunity to battle dinosaurs, taking them away from opposing players. To win, players want the most points from their dinosaurs, but watch out, the meteors might be headed your way.

How To Play the Game:

1.First, players should take all 62 cards and shuffle them all together very thoroughly.

2.Then, one player should grab the deck of cards and deal 5 cards face down to each player, placing the cards face down in front of them.

3.Next, a player should place the remaining deck of cards face down in the middle of the playing area.

4. The oldest player gets to go first by looking at the 5 cards in their hand. Along with the opposing players, the first player should not show, or tell the cards in their hand to any other player.

5. The player should place down card(s) face up in front of them. These cards players place in front of themselves are cards that can be battled by other players and can contribute to points (unless a player receives a meteor card). They will have the chance to place down up to 5 dino cards (of same species), 1 food card, or place down a meteor card in front of another player on their turn. If a player receives a meteor card from another player, they must place a shield card on top of it. Then, they would place both the shield and the meteor cards in the discard pile and are still in the game. If a player receives a meteor card and does not have a shield, they must place all of their cards including the ones in front of them, the cards in their hand, and the meteor card in the discard pile. The player should then draw 5 new cards.

6. At the end of their turn, players should grab card(s) so they will always have 5 cards in their hand.

7. Now the player on the left will play their turn. Like the first person, they may place down up to 5 dino cards (of the same species), 1 food card, or place a meteor card in front of another player. Once again, if a player receives a meteor card and does not have a shield, they should put all of the cards in their hand and in front of them into the discard pile and draw 5 new cards. In some conditions, players may have the option to battle dinosaurs with another dinosaur. At the end of their turn, players should grab card(s) so they will always have 5 cards in their hand.

8. Players will continue to take their turns by going clockwise. On their turn they can place all the same cards as before, they can also battle dinosaurs or place down a time portal. At the end of their turn, the player should grab card(s) so they will always have 5 cards in their hand.

9. Continue to do this until all the cards run out.

10. When the deck of cards runs out players should put all the cards in their hand in the discard pile and count all the points from the cards in front of them. You can find the amount of points of each card in the upper right corner of each card. The player with the most points would then win.

Battling Rules

1.For a player to battle dinosaurs, there must be at least one other dinosaur on the playing arena in front of another player that is not under a time portal.

2.To battle, the player must have a dinosaur card(s) IN THERE HAND and show only that/those card(s) in their hand to all the opponents and say, “ (Players name), I want to battle this dino, for your dino.”

3.A number can be found in the upper right corner of the card. Players will look at the points on their dinosaur card and then they will add up all their points if necessary.

4. The player with the most points at the end of a battle will not only get to keep their card(s) but they will also receive the other players cards that they battled with.

5. The winning player will place their new cards in front of them as if they were part of the cards that they had placed on their previous turns.

6. Even though the losing player might of lost, there is still a way that they can get their card back along with the opposing players card that they just battled with.

If the losing player has a card that is worth more points than the dinosaur that just won the battle, they can place down the higher ranking card on top of the cards that were just battled and will receive all three cards to place in front of them.

Additional Battling Tips and Tricks

If a player wants to battle one of your dinosaurs with a x2 food card under it, you can still battle dinosaurs but the food card will still be in power. For example, if a T-Rex has a food card under it, for battle instead of being 5 points, it is 10 points and if the player loses in a battle with a food card, the winning player will not only get the dinosaur card, but also will get the x2 food card under the dinosaur.

During a battle, the player who wants to battle will get to choose not only who they want to battle with but also gets to choose what dinosaur they want to battle against from the cards that have been placed down in front of the chosen player.

While battling, if two dinosaurs are worth the same amount of points, all the dinosaurs that were involved in the battle must be put back into the discard pile.

Time Portals

If you have a time portal card, you can only put 3 cards under it. After cards are under the time portal card, you may not take any cards out from under it or place new cards under it. The same three cards must stay under the time portal.

Time Portals are there for the player to keep cards safe from battle. No one can battle anything stored under a time portal and the only way you can eliminate cards under a time portal and the card itself, is a meteor.

If a card is under a time portal, it cannot be battled by any other players.

Food Cards- Leaf and Meat Cards

Also, food cards must be put under dinosaurs. You can’t place a food card on top of a dinosaur card as then both cards will be void while scoring. For the dinosaur cards with the food card under it, to count for points, the dinosaur card must be on top of the food card. After a dinosaur card is placed down on top of a food card, players may not switch out the dinosaur card on top of it. It must stay there.

If you have a food card placed down and you want to place multiple of the same dinosaurs on top of it, you can but for batting a player can only battle 1 individual dinosaur with the x2 power up.

Note: All the dinosaur cards must be placed down on the same turn. When the cards run out, all cards on top of the power up will all get the x2 points.

All dinosaur cards have a colored background behind the dinosaurs, the colored backgrounds are either green or red. The food card background color and the dinosaur background color correspond to each other.

Point Tracking

The points for each dinosaur can be found in the upper right corner of each card. The only way your points can be cleared is if another player places down a meteor card in front of you and you do not have a shield card. At the end of the game when there are no more cards left you look in the upper right corner of each card in front of you (Cards in your hand and cards you placed down before a meteor do not count) and whoever has the most points from the dinosaur cards and food cards wins the game.

How do you win/end the game?
The game ends when the deck of cards runs out. The player with the most points from the cards in front of them wins the game.

Why should people want to buy your game:
Dino Mania is a game everyone should own because it is a game about dinosaurs,it is a fast paced game that allows players to take risks, and it is a competitive game that allows you to battle other players.

Title of the Game: Cat on the run

Group Name: Gaming cats

Number of Players: 2-4

Game Mechanics: secret deployment and variable player powers

Objective: The objective of the game, is the cat wants to get on the number right in front of a building door so they can rob it. That would mean he/she would rob the building, then, only the cat would choose a money card and if it was a $5 card, then they would choose to take 1 gem, and when you cash in your money for gems, your points will still stay the same, they just get cashed in for gems, because it is easier to count gems, than counting up and adding up all of your money points. If you are the detective you would try to get good mystery cards so you can get hints to where the cat is or were it is. The detectives want to get to the exact number that the cat is on. If that person does then the cat was caught and that person wins.

Short Description: There is a cat and 3 detectives (only need 1 cat and 1 detective to play) Skylar, Jason, Will are the three detective names. The cat has to go around town and break into places to get money. He/she has to roll dice and move on the numbers and get to the front door to get in. The detectives are trying to find the cats path and figure out were it is going to be so they can catnap him/her. The detectives also roll the dice and move on the numbers trying to land on the same number as the cat. The detectives get lots of hint to where the cat is to and sometimes the cat has to tell where he is because of the card.

How To Play the Game:
~ Put all of the detectives on the start.
~ Then the mystery cards will get set on the side of the board.
~ Everyone has to move on the numbers they don’t move on the spaces drawn on the board.
~ Once that is all done, the person that was chose for going first will have to roll the numbered ~Dice and see how far they are going to move.
~You have to move on the numbers and not on the spaces drawn on the board.
~ Only the cat can go on tree numbers. If you are the cat do not sit on the tree numbers always. ~ That would be considered cheating.
~ The detectives can not go on trees.
~ Then once they have moved and have done there turn, just before it ends he/she will pick a ~mystery card and see what it says. If it is saying that there is a dog or an animal control truck ~where the cat is, then the cat will say what number he/she is on.
~ So let's say the cat is on 22 and at the end of the detectives turn they pick a animal control or
~ Dog the card will say that the cat needs to say were he is so then the cat announces that he/she is on 22.
~ Then, it will go clockwise, the next person will roll the face dice and then repeat that until all four people go. Once all of the detetives roll, they take their turn then the cat will go.
~ You can only rob places when you are right on the number in front of the door.
~ You can only follow the road, for example 15 and 16, if you are on 15 and then it is on the other road you can not go over the field and then get to 16.( you don't have to go in order with the numbers.)

How does the cat play?
First choose one person to be the cat.
Give the red notepad and green marker to the cat.
Write your real name on the top of the notepad.
The cat chooses a number anywhere on the board and writes it down in the notepad.
To move the cat will also rolls the dice the cat has the same rule it can only move to the spaces around itself but can not go across the field it needs to follow the road.
The cat has to secretly move so don't let any of your friends know

How do you win/end the game? The game ends when the detectives catch the cat (have to be on the space that the cat is on), or when the cat gets all 13 gems. The winner is the cat, if they have gathered ALL 13 gems WITHOUT being caught by the detectives, and the detectives win if the cat doesn’t have 13 gems, and if they do catch the cat.

Why should people want to buy your game: Cat On The Run is a game that everyone should own because, this game takes concentration and strategy, it is a competitive game that will make you want to keep playing, and it’s a secret game that will have the other players guessing to win.

The goal of the game is to get as many points for your team until you're at the end of the board game.Through the board you will go through obstacles that can damage you points or/and your team. There will also be parts of the board that can give you an advantage to you and/or you team. At the end of the game add up all your points to find out the Wisconsin State Champ.

Short Description:
The Big Dub is a fun, Action Point systems, Card Drafting, Variable Player Powers, Set collection, Take that, and Action packed 2 player game! Each player/team goes along the board completing tasks that the spaces say too do, like travel, free throw, or foul and much more. When going around the board with rivalry against the other team, you may sabotage the other team depending on what player cards you have/used for that turn. As you land on different spots and gain points, keep in mind that to win, you have to complete going around the board twice, and have more points in the end

How To Play the Game:
1). After setting up the game, roll a dice to determine who is team West and Team North. (whoever rolls the bigger number on a dice, they choose what team they want to be.
2.) Draw 3 player cards randomly from your deck of cards, if your team is Oshkosh West draw from the Oshkosh West deck, if your team is Oshkosh North draw from the Oshkosh North deck.
3.)Both teams start with zero points, and begin on the tip off space on the game board.
4.) The Player who didn’t get to pick their team goes first.
5.)Then that team/player puts down one card they want to play ( a little, a point guard, or a post) Then they roll the dice, and the number you get on the dice is the amount of spaces you move (if you land on the basketball hoop, that means you go to the free throw line which is the pink dot on the half board, than flick the meeple in the hoop to gain a point and than also move one space forward and carry on the game as normal.)

Here are what the spaces on the board do.

How do you win/end the game

The game ends when you complete the end of the game board.
The team with the most points out of the two teams is the winner.
Add up your point you have collected throughout the game board to find out who wins.
It doesn’t really matter who completes the game board first, it matters of how many points you get at the end.
The winner is announced the Wisconsin State basketball Champs.

Why should people want to buy your game:

People should buy our game because it is action packed, real basketball situations, and has a lot of fun game mechanics, like action Point systems, Card Drafting, Variable Player Powers, Set collection, Take that.

If a teammate places down a zookeeper card then one of the animal might be in trouble. If the zookeeper gets the adult animal then it will also not get the baby in the path and you will not get the animals in the path to the finish.

If the adult animal in the row is caught by the zookeeper you need to put adult and baby animal on the

How do you win/end the game? The game is a cooperative game, so either the whole group that is playing the game wins or loses. You will lose the game if you get less than 400 points and you will win the game if you 400 points or more.
