It's always hard to think of a subject for these lists. We've done 335 of them already, how many things are left to discuss?

So I tossed a few ideas around, but none of them really grabbed me as a good idea. It was no good, I had gone blank. And then it hit me, do a list about blank!!!

It struck me that there are quite a few games where at least some of the components are blank at the start of the game and allow the players to be a little more creative. Lets talk about games that have blank components and how they change during the game.

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

If you're a lurker or have otherwise discovered GCL Eclipse, feel free to read along with us. And if you have a constructive comment or something else you think would add to the discussion, consider posting it—if it's helpful, respectful, and polite to the discussion group as a whole, as well as to its individual members. The most obvious games that have blank components are ones where you write or draw with erasable pens. This is one of the best and most fun ones. It's Vlaada Chvátil's gamer version of Pictionary.

Each player has a unique word they need to draw, but while they are drawing, they also need to try to work out what everyone else is drawing. Speed in both drawing and working out what the others are drawing is important, but don't rush so much that you get it wrong.

Points are awarded for getting it right, but you may lose points for getting it wrong.

My daughters favourite game, so one I have played a lot. Very simple, ask a question, all the other players try to come up with an answer you will like. You choose one, everyone bets on what they think you will choose., reveal the answer, give out points.

Game tends to adapt to who you are playing with as well. It plays very differently if you are playing with children, playing with people you know very well or playing with strangers.

Everyone starts the game with an identical deck of 20 cards. Eight of those cards will be blank. During the game the players will buy advancements and add them to the cards, making all of them better (Or at least you hope you will) during the game.

It's a card crafting game, it's almost a deck builder bit slightly different.

A lot of games come with score pads that the players fill in either during the game or at the end of it. I always laminate some score pads and use dry erase pens with them.

Ex Libris saves me the job, already having a dry erase board as part of the components. It's really easy to use and makes tallying lots of different ways to score at the end of the game really easy.

Comes with a clear sheet that you place over the tiles after building the board. You draw roads on the sheet rather than making permanent changes to the tiles.

Could have been done using dry erase pens and wipe able tiles, but Splotter always do things differently.

Roll-and-writes! Everyone starts with a blank sheet and as dice are rolled/cards are flipped, everyone fills in their sheets. Lots of popular ones coming out these days, though Avenue continues to be one of my favorites.

And the Legacy games start with blank boards so to speak. I have to say I’ve been increasingly disappointed in these because they don’t seem to work that well and it’s it’s difficult to get players to commit.

This game starts with a map of Africa, with only the coast filled in. As players explore the dark continent the map gets created.

An early example of multi player solitaire.

All 18XX games start with a large part of the game board blank. It fills up as the players start to lay rails, run and manipulate companies.

When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

Lots of abstract games start with empty boards! DVONN happens to start AND end with an empty board.
