I'm making this top ten as an extension of last year's geeklist.

Please feel free to comment on why you agree with me, or why my opinions are wrong

Enjoy!

Honorable Mention

Last year: Not on the list

My honorable mention last year was Legends of Andor. It turns out that we didn't like it all that much and ended up trading it away. No big deal.

Above and Below is a unique game in our collection. Basically a worker placement/resource management/set collection game with a sprinkle of story. It works well for us.

This didn't drop because I like it any less than I did last year. It's only to make room for games that are new to the list. I still like how quick the game is and do not mind playing it with 4 players. I've yet to try the alternate map set up for 2, but I have a feeling that we'll like it even more.

Again, this drop is only so I could add more games onto the list. This dropped less than Nexus Ops because it's still a mainstay on our table. And we actually like the 2 player expert variant with the dummy city.

Last year: Not on the list

When I made my top 10 last year, it had been a while since we last played RftG, so I had forgotten how much I enjoy it. We've played it a handful of times since last year's list and every time I have to ask, "Why don't we play this more often?"

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: playing through PL:S1 was probably the best board gaming experience I've ever had. It's too bad that I haven't done it again. I'm willing to bet that this may slip again next year - only because I keep finding games that I want to return to over and over again.

We only played this twice since last year's top 10, but I still enjoy it. It's just tough to get to play because my wife is my main gaming partner. I love the variety in the characters, the unpredictability of the action dice, the horrible, horrible exposure die, equipping my group, etc. There is just so much to like about this game.

Slipped a few spots for a new top 3 games. However, I still really enjoy F:TG. I really do get a sense of managing a Firefly class ship by hiring crew, evading the Alliance and pulling off ridiculous jobs.

A great worker placement with dice rolling. I recently added Valhalla and Dark Mountains into the mix. Easy to teach. Lots of fun to play. The last thing I need is the game mat...

Since adding this to my game library, it has regularly seen playing time. I'm a little bummed that each of the expansions adds a new mechanism to the game (but I will say that the Aztecs' press-your-luck prayer mechanism really appeals to me). That being said, I only have the base game and have been extremely happy with it.

I got into board gaming because of Magic the Gathering. I don't have the time, energy or money for MtG anymore but I had a lot of fun playing it. So I went looking for something to replace it. Enter Summoner Wars. It's a shame that it's out of print, but I have been lucky enough to find a used copy of the master set and have acquired varying factions that satisfy my need for a good 1v1 battle. I also love (and am not very good at) the tactical element to SW. The variety in factions, the clever abilities - everything about the game gets me excited to play.

The internet is good for many things. One of those things is board game recommendations. When I saw that Summoner Wars was out of print, I sort of wrote it off. I jumped on BGG to ask for recommendations for a good alternative to SW. Neuroshima Hex! was suggested. As soon as we were done muddling through the rule book, we jumped right in. It has easily climbed to the top of this list. Every game of NH! is so satisfying. I love the variety of the armies - and I don't own all of them, nor do I think I ever will. I love the careful planning that each unit placement requires. I have never played the App version, and I'm OK with that, because I LOVE stacking up my tiles to draw the first one. I get giddy every time we decide to play!

Recently, Portal games had a contest on their Portal Games Insider youtube series. To win a NH! mug, Ignacy has viewers post their favorite NH! army and why. I won!
