When green is all there is to be, it could make you wonder why. But why wonder? I'm green, and it'll do fine: it's beautiful, and I think it's what I want to be.

Over-achieving

Lately I've been "doing it all:" remodeling my house, keeping up at work, writing and officiating numerous ceremonies, and fitting in the occasional game. Sometimes it feels like I'm over-achieving. So let's talk about it.

Have you ever had an experience in a game where you "over-achieved?" Perhaps your winning score was so far in front of the other players as to be embarrassing. Or maybe you took on a "heavy" game and did really well at it on the first try.

What about in life beyond gaming? wow What are some of the achievements of which you're most proud? (Many of you may sight "having/raising kids", which is a great achievement, but try to think outside that box.)

What about gaming as a hobby? Are there any achievements that you're particularly proud of? Or, do you have goals and aspirations that you've yet to achieve?

Let's get philosophical for a moment. Do we live in a society that over-emphasizes achievement? What is the cost to us when we over-achieve? How do we strike the balance between being "productive" and having the time to stop and smell the roses?

Recent Plays: 6/13–6-18, Special Origins Edition

I just got back from Origins yesterday and had a great time! Here's what I got to play!

Pre-Origins
Feudum: After a few nights studying the rules, we embarked on our first play. And we had a great time! We mostly just pulled levers and pushed buttons to see how the game works and we liked the interlocking mechanisms and the guild interactions very much. We are looking forward to another play! While I certainly see where it has received criticism for the 2-player, I'm optimistic that we'll enjoy the experience regardless. (We also have no problem enjoying some friendly competition and going after one another.) If we continue to enjoy it, we may look into the upcoming expansion that adds an automa player if we feel it needs more going on.

Origins
Reef: Fun abstract! I liked this more than I thought I would, though I don't enjoy the color palette/art upon reflection. The way you setup chaining actions is satisfying and fun.
Welcome To... x2: A quality "draw-and-draw." I enjoyed both plays and added this to the wishlist.
Orléans: Invasion: Paul taught the coop to some friends and we had a great time. We didn't win, coming short on both citizens and money, but it was a blast. Always a joy to play it.
Escape Plan: WOW. Con Highlight, right here. First of all, I got to experience a game teach by the one and only Paul Grogan, which was amazing. Second, I got to enjoy this with 3 other fantastic and fun gamers. Third, this game is amazing. (All of you on the GCL know I'm a fan of Vital's designs anyway, so this probably isn't shocking.) This is definitely his lightest "big" game, though it still fits into his oeuvre. This game is tense, exciting, dramatic, and thematic. Players are all part of a heist team and you just divided the money and squirreled it away in town. But someone snitched and now the cops are after all of us! Over the course of 3 days, we have to run all over town to recover our money and get out of town on the third day. Maybe some of it is hidden in some local establishments, maybe some of it is in a public locker with a key at a safe house. Maybe you're moving through town and get in a tussle with some police, earning you a wound and some notoriety. When a player gains a certain amount of notoriety, the other players get to move police toward that player, but that player gets to move up in turn order. Decisions, decisions. In our game, everyone got out except one person, who didn't have enough hush money to pay off the guy at the exit. It was a riot and I can't wait to play it some more!
The Quacks of Quedlinburg: I still haven't played Heaven & Ale, but so far this is my pick for Kennerspiel. Really fun push-your-luck bag building that is fast and easy to learn. Looking forward to more plays.
Patchistory: Big 4-player game teaching some friends and a great time. We all let Paul run away with military, which also gave him a solid win.
PÜNCT: Got to try another game in the GIPF Project and this one didn't disappoint! Onto the wishlist it goes! Reminded me of Twixt, which I used to play as a kid.
Kitten Klash x2: Matching speed game with cute art. We won a copy of this in a raffle and gave it a try.
Carthago: Merchants & Guilds: What a fantastic game this is! Got to play a demo with friends at the Capstone booth and thoroughly enjoyed it. Neat multiuse card game that has some nice strategy to it and plays in a short time frame.
7 Wonders: Armada: Got to play a full game of 7 Wonders with the prototype of the new Armada expansion, and wow. Blown away. This is a really fun expansion that adds a lot of interaction between all players at the table and expands on some of the decision space for more interesting drafting. Definitely picking this up when it comes out.
Prowler's Passage: We played through about half a game of this one and moved on—not for us. A disappointment considering it is a 2-player Kevern/Renegade title. The art was dark and busy and the gameplay was really dull. Hard pass.
Century: Eastern Wonders: Another surprise, as we didn't care for Spice Road. For a light euro, this was quite nice and I'd be happy to play it from time to time. Fun combo-building and a little more going on than Spice Road.

Post-Origins
The Lost Expedition: A new acquisition I picked up on sale and tried solo while waiting on some laundry to finish. Very challenging, very beautiful, and looking forward to trying the two-player coop (and maybe one day the competitive mode).

Entering the Collection
The Sands of Time: I got extremely lucky at the Blue Peg Pink Peg meetup raffle and won a copy! Looking forward to trying this one out.
Thanos Rising: Avengers Infinity War: Another BPPP raffle win, likely gifting this or trading it.
Deadpool vs The World: Ditto.
The Lost Expedition
Carthago: Merchants & Guilds: Another win from BPPP, though technically I won a copy of The Godfather: Corleone's Empire and Paul was able to negotiate a trade on the spot with another winner for Carthago instead.
Kitten Klash
Loads of promos! Clans of Caledonia bags, bunches of Meeple Realty inserts, Orleans place tiles, 3 Keyflower tiles.
And 2 sketches of our kitties by the amazing artist Tina Bongorno!

If you'd like any more details on any of the games I played, please let me know!
