Played by: Gordon, Chris and Andrew

After an even more than usual protracted 'what-shall-we-play' discussion we decided that Andrew (running late) would join Chris and I to play London, after Chris had explained how to play Pulsar to the other table. By the time Chris got clear of that Andrew and I had basically ran through each other's life histories. Fortunately we had all played London before and even if we hadn't the superb custom player aids would have made playing a breeze anyway.

Chris went small (4 sites) tableau and was clearly aiming at high VP prestige buildings, I went relatively big (6 sites) early which Andrew eventually followed. If you are going big you need to make every run of your city pay given the fact that you will attract more poverty and I had a dud run - just didn't get hold of enough good brown cards early on.

Chris was doing well stuffing things like Buck' Palace into his city but then he was forced to take a late loan to run his underground when Andrew's Firebrigade 'hosed' his riverside real-estate.

Poverty was close at the end, Andrew and I tying and Chris having only 3 more, but it was a crucial 3 more -

Andrew - 52
Chris - 51
Gordon - 39

Played by: Gordon, Biblical, Chris and Andrew

Face to face 'Race' at a table of sharks - all players having logged into 3 figures worth of plays.

Biblical played the 'I am so losing' card throughout and it turned out with good reason. Andrew set out aiming for the 4-production world bonus; Chris seemed to be following the same small tableau strategy as in London, which it must be said is not as viable in 'Race'; and I marshalled my legions and picked off a few 3-point bonuses.

If you go military and draw military it's an easy game - although you do have to make sure you do draw.

Gordon - 47
Andrew - 31
Chris - 29
James - 5 (or something like that).

Played by B.James, Adam, Nerijus and Brother Chris

A first play for all of us played under one slightly incorrect rule because of the video I’d watched in the way to the Club. Anyway excuses aside

You’re all trying to become the Lord of Hellas by achieving one of 4 victory conditions:- control 2 lands, kill 3 mythical monsters, control 5 temples or control a completed monument.

To achieve this you have a hero to fight monsters and complete quests, an army of hopilites to control lands and some priests to gain the favour of the gods (this generally upgrades your hero’s and improves in strength as the monuments get built).

So the game is area controls, a bit fights and some general scheming to make sure that other people don’t win and making a dive for the line first.

Adam started at an almighty pace and could have closed the game out within 30 minutes as he relentlessly attacked Nerijus while I was trying to march armies down from the North to stop him. A frenetic combat round lead to Nerijus holding on by the skin of his teeth but his army looking on the unhealthy side. His heroic efforts meant I could attack Adams exposed flank (fnar?) and hold him back.

The attack on Nerijus held him back for much of the game but he was able to hold on manfully and didn’t flip the table. Brother Chris was amassing an army in the north and had control of the northern lands for the whole match.

I was feeling squeezed between everyone in the middle so I decided to try and attack some mythical beasts to achieve that victory condition. It didn’t go well. The hunt to kill mythical creatures is a really neat mechanic that involves matching combat cards to wound the creature, enough wounds and the monster dies. What I learned was that your character needs to be very strong to survive these so attacking without upgrading left me very battered and bruised.

Brother Chris and Adam were busy going on quests for glory and I marched my troops to take over Sparta which generates a lot of additional hopilites.

I used the hopilites to swarm the southern lands and sneak to victory using one of the rules the video got wrong (but that we’d all been using

Overall I liked this a lot but would like to play again. The minis make the board a tiny bit cluttered but the game play and social element makes it a fun time.

Despite the first time playing, it being a 4 player game and lots of rules checking we were finished first so feels like a slick game.

B.James - winner, winner chicken dinner
B.Chris, Adam and Nerijus - loser royales

Played by Triukšmingas Gareth, Ingrid and James.

Since I was not involved in gameplay, I will not be able to elaborate!

After recruiting Chris to explain the rules newly found corporations engaged in the quest to conquer the galaxy!

Ingrid was leading for the good part of the game, Gareth decided to build his own mobile network of transmitters and James looked confused!

Despite that James won in the end game scoring leaving Ingrid second and Gareth third.

James 179
Ingrid 163
Gareth 148
