Previous Session Reports

On June 23, 2018, sixteen CBBS and CBBS adjacent gamers eschewed mainstream gaming to descend into Tim's basement and fake play a bunch of fake games. Witnesses refuse to confirm that Tim, Eric 5, Nyck, Jerry, Art, Ian, Andy, Tom, Kory, Jeremiah, Eric 2, Eric Classic, Evee, Elden, Mason, Ammon, and Robert Downey, Jr. were there.

There is no game more fake than Ricochet Robots. There are no turns, players can come and go as they please, we let people steal solutions if they have fewer chips, and we don't even list a winner. It's basically a complete mockery of the whole concept of a game.

Tim, Eric 5, Nyck, Jerry, Art, Ian*, and Andy* earned a chip by "playing" and successfully finding and/or poaching at least one solution. Shawn* earned an asterisk by not only not playing Ricochet Robots but not even showing up to this game night.

Because we are so durn good at Ricochet Robots, we needed to kill five minutes before Washington State law would allow us to start playing real games.

This is what SET is for.

Everybody got some SET, most of them before Tim could even finish replacing the cards from the previous SET. That's how we in the CBBS roll, baby.

We are getting much worse at deciding what games to play at Game Night, probably because as the world spirals into a bottomless pit of despair and destruction, it's hard to get too worked up about which of the 900 games Tim owns that we should play. Nevertheless, a decision needed to be made, and eventually Tim forced Andy, Nyck, and Jerry to play El Gaucho on Table One.

The math of El Gaucho is very interesting and non-intuitive. Cheap cows actually may be worth more than expensive cows, since you can get them more easily, as long as you cap your herds with a big'un and are able to sell before it is stolen. Nyck did some stealing in this game, but otherwise there wasn't a whole lot of that - partly that was because we didn't roll a lot of fours, but the essential tension of playing for a cow versus securing a future special action is really what this game is all about, and I think expert players would be a little more aggressive than we tend to be. In response, then, you probably need a couple big value cappers on your herds to protect your equity from theft - or we should then use the selling special action more often to lock in our scores.

At any rate, Tim started with a couple low value cows of the same breed, and was annoyed when others started grabbing cows of that breed - but, in retrospect, that lead to him taking small cows of other breeds, which gave him more total dice to work with than if he had to build one big herd using cows of value 7 or more. In the end he had four small herds, each capped with an 11 or 12, which, along with some points earned along the way from Nyck's thievery, gave him 150 points and the win.

Andy also had a lot of cows spread out amongst multiple herds, but Nyck's final theft targeted Andy rather than Tim - at that point Tim had not yet secured his fourth herd, so Andy looked like the bigger threat, and his cow scored more for Nyck anyway. Andy finished with 129 points, so it would have been a very close finish if Nyck had targeted Tim instead.

Nyck couldn't quite maximize one of his herds despite all the rustlin', and he finished with 115, while Jerry used the steppes a lot but also couldn't lock in some big numbers and he wound up with 114.

Meanwhile, over on Table Three, Art, Jeremiah, Tom, and Kory foolishly challenged Eric 5's supremacy at Roll for the Galaxy.

Eric 5 squashed his foes with aplomb, not quite doubling his closest rivals by scoring 49 points. In some other, parallel game, Jeremiah and Kory tied with 25, while Tom finished with 24 and Art somehow managed 15.

Finally, back in the Lounge, Ian, New Eric, Eric Classic, and Evee played Lords of Hellas, a game that sounds suspiciously Fake to this reporter. Apparently it has plastic miniatures or some damn thing the kids are all gaga about these days. Back in my day, we used wooden cubes for everything, and we LIKED it that way.

I'ma get Snopes to see if this game actually exists or not.

Ian, as Hercules, was about to win, but didn't. Eric Classic, as Persues, was not even close to winning. New Eric, as Achilles, almost won. And then he did win. Evee, as Helen, might have won in another couple turns, or might have been delusional.

Elden made 74 score points, while Ammon earned 65 score points, and Mason accrued 44 score points.

After exactly one century of play, Jeremiah had accumulated 64 zorknids and claimed victory. Eric 5, Art, Kory, and Tom followed with 62, 59, 58, and 55 respectively.

Elden won, despite Ammon's probably delusional claim that he would have won if the game was logical.

So, on Table One, Tim hemmed and hawed until he finally saw the venerable Hansa and said to himself, "eh, why not". And, with that ringing endorsement, Andy, Nyck, and Jerry joined him.

This feels like a Michael Schacht game, which, of course, it is. It has simple, elegant rules and mechanisms that lead to interesting emergent behavior. It's interesting how often your turns are the same, as everybody develops and works a particular cycle on the board, that leaves the ship in the same place as it did last time and feeds into that persons cycle. But because of the points for the merchant offices, you really need to find a way to break out and hit most of the cities in the board at least once.

The essential scoring tension of the game is when to use your goods to establish offices and when to use your offices to score your goods. In general, you want to build offices early to open up your scoring options late, and using a threefer to grab control of a city is big - but, of course, scoring it as a threefer is also pretty big.

Anyway, Tim grabbed an early monopoly in Stockholm (which is only reachable by caravan across the top) and established a lead in Reval - this fed nicely off Andy's development of the west, as Tim could often run across the top and get some free goods. He cashed some early goods, which is important to do at least once to establish a lead, then took offices whenever he could. Nyck, who came after, also spent most of the game spreading his offices around. I think most new players work a little too hard to gain control of a city - it's certainly valuable to do so and taking the opportunity when it arises is important, but establishing a minority presence can be almost as valuable, especially if it takes fewer coins to do so.

In the end Tim had an extra set of good, while Nyck had one extra city, so it was a very close finish. But goods generally score more than cities, so Tim's (office+goods) score of 16+31=47 was just enough to prevail over Nyck's 18+27=45. Andy never made it to the east and finished with 12+20=32, while Jerry finished with 12+13=25.

(Jerry had somehow discovered the Hansa Extrakarte optional bonus scoring variant, which gives you most points for onefer goods having the highest stack of offices and stuff like that. Tim had decided not to bother with that as he tried to review the rules from a zillion years ago, but somehow it found its way out of the box and into Jerry's purview. So Jerry spent the early part of the game working toward bonuses that would never pay off, which was kind of unfortunate.)

Over on Table Three, Art, Eric 5, Jeremiah, and Kory showed their hubris by claiming they could play Last Will in a time frame that matched the other tables. And so they did!

The key to this was that Eric 5 crushed his opponents quickly, getting to -£2, while Art, Jeremiah, and Kory were still on +£28, +£22, and +£11. One surmises that Eric 5 ended the game a round earlier than the others were prepared for, which is always a good strategery.

Apparently, the goofball session of Game Night came a couple hours early, as we were done with deep strategic games and instead played about bunch of pseudo-fillers. Which is great, because all that braining is bad for you. On Table Two, Art, Evee, Eric Classic, and Eric five played Istanbul: The Dice Game, because every game is now required to have a dice version.

Eric Classic was the first to get to five rubies in some manner that is nobody's business but the Turks. Evee and Eric 5 were on three rubies apiece, while Art had earned two.

At this point Tim was in the mood for a game exactly like
Noch mal!. Unfortunately, he couldn't actually play his copy of Noch mal!, because Elden was already playing it. This made Tim sad. The End.

So Tim, Nyck, Jerry, Ian, and New Eric played Qwixx instead, using the Qwixx: Big Points scoresheets Tim picked up a while back. These have two extra hybrid rows between yellow/red and blue/green that you can also mark using numbers of either color and that add to both. We played it wrong, thinking the hybrid rows were always available, but the actual rules (which Tim had to later download, as the originals were in German) say that you can only mark a hybrid number if that number has already been marked by either associated color. You still have to mark left to right in the hybrid rows just like regular rows.

Anyway, dice were rolled! Numbers were marked off! Ian scored 199 points! Jerry, New Eric, Tim, and Nyck scored 181, 163, 145, and 145 points! That's it.

It then seemed like a good time to play Rise of Augustus. Tim, Ian, Eric 5, Nyck, and Kory agreed.

This game played out somewhat differently than expected - Nyck and Eric 5 blitzed the game, scoring a lot of tiles early and angling for the bonus tiles. Tim, instead, had spent the early game getting one of those "catapult equals chariot" tiles, which meant he was behind in the race for the bonus tiles. So he took the 4 pointer that was left behind by the blitzers and instead focused on scoring big pointers, figuring the game was probably out of his reach.

Surpringly, at least to Tim, this strategy worked! When one of the rabbits finally ended the game, Tim discovered his total of 54 was enough for the win, despite only scoring that single four point bonus tile. Eric 5 could only muster 50 with his more numerous but cheaper territories and senators, while Kory, Ian, and Nyck finished with 49, 42, and 38, respectively.

It is pleasing to know that Rise of Augustus can actually allow multiple strategies and some important decisionmaking, at least some of the time.

After attrition we discovered we had exactly six gamers left, so there was literally no option but to finish the evening playing Dog Royal. I bet all those losers who left early regret it now! The teams were Tim and Ian vs. Art and Nyck vs. Eric 5 and Kory.

This was a very close game, as Tim and Eric 5 finished up close to each other, with Art not far behind. So each round it seemed like some team would have the cards to win, which meant everybody was playing defense on the initial draw. Art thought he had it in hand until Tim embarked on a swapping campaign the likes of which have never been seen in Western society. Of course, the swapper cards can't get you home, so we underwent a few rounds of near misses until, finally, Tim and Ian drew the right three card sequence to move two fellers up one space in Home and finally move Ian's King in for the victory.
