Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, eh? I don't know much about the 'crazy' (Hansa Teutonica counts as "something a bit wacky" for us these days), but we've certainly been lazy and a bit hazy this month. Lazing around means plenty of chance to drag those rarities off the shelf - what's on your lazing list?

The instructions are, as always:

Quote:
Look at your plays for the month of June, and then check out the games and see if you can find any games where you are currently the solitary logger of a play for June (or if the other loggers were actually in the same game session with you). Use your common sense in order to make the search faster. Obviously things like Dominion, Magic, etc. will have plenty of people playing them. Note: expansions that only you logged are fine, feel free to add them as well.

Then share any comments you might have. Are we missing something? How could this happen? What is your opinion of the game?

Got this during my last trip to Japan and finally got around to playing it. I liked it opposed, but really it shone most as a solo game. I need many more plays to figure this one out however.

This is a bit of a cheat since I've played solo only. I've been pouring over the manual and marveling at the possibilities. This may be the only game that you could center a college curriculum around.

Careful is a very tall dexterity game from the 1960's. It comes in an appropriately large box. Due to its height when set up, we played it on the floor.

I got 2 plays of Careful in during June. This is a game that was in my wife's family since the mid-1970's, but it was not getting played, so I included it as a sweetener in a math trade. Before it went out the door, I played it with my stepson (with my daughter observing -- she was too scared to play) and with my parents.

Careful is a dexterity game. When initially set up, the structure is wobbly and top heavy. Each turn, you spin to see what color support to remove, and then you can manipulate pretty much all of the supports as you wish in order to get one of that color out. When the structure falls, it's pretty spectacular. There are rules for scoring if you are willing to build the structure multiple times

To me, Careful is similar enough to Jenga that Jenga would tend to win (unless you have a nostalgic connection to Careful) based on Jenga being so much smaller and easier to set up and store.

5 recorded plays of 1825 Unit 1, but mine was the only one that included Unit 2, Unit 3, R1, R2, R3, K1, K5, K6 & K7.

I was apparently also the only one of 98 people that included RoboRally: Armed and Dangerous when playing RoboRally.

In a surprising development, some non children's games this month (as well as a few that are)

This one did surprise me. Utopia should get more love (or possibly some love back). Some say it's overproduced while others just paint up the pretty plastic buildings. Sitting closely behind the leader seems to work a lot better than being that leader.

People obviously prefer other peasant-drowning games as Vineta also makes this list. It does vary from a thinky to a chaotic game depending on player count.

People also seem to have given up 'scaring' bunnies with large trains. Taught Karnickel to my eldest daughter- obviously, she beat me.

Schoko-Hexe is the one children's game in my selection this month. I think the added house rule of getting to eat a piece of chocolate if they make one in-game has made this popular

A few more just failed to make the list owing to one other person also playing

I've recently come into a box of, well, one person's trash is another player's cache.

Still digging into - an unshrinking(!)- most of it. Will have more to add from the mystery box later this week I imagine, but this is the first.

My wife said she had read the rules, so she told me how to play. Afterwards, she clarified that she had not read the rules and just made it up.

In a twist of fate, the last line of the rules is one of those "or just make up your own rules" things, so, joke's on her. We did play by the rules.

We received a nicely produced playtest set of PlusMinus, which is an abstract strategy game played on a GIPF-esque hex grid. Take turns placing a piece in your color and win with 5-in-a-row.

It has the twist that each player's pieces have a + (plus) side and a - (minus) side, which you choose when you play a piece on your turn. Same signs repel, opposites attract. E.g. playing a plus piece will repel one adjacent plus piece directly away into an empty space, or directly attract a minus piece which is 2 spaces away (if there's no intervening piece). A piece which you repel or attract will then do the same to another piece if possible, and so on, in a (theoretically potentially long) chain reaction.

So the board state can change interestingly; in this sense, it's vaguely reminiscent of the 5-in-a-row game Pentago in which you rotate a board quadrant after placing your piece.

We've been enjoying it and having various aha-effects, e.g. discovering and exploiting a fundamental asymmetry between repels (which cannot push a line of pieces) and attracts (which can pull a line of alternating +-+- pieces).

Unsurprisingly, we've played this again this month. And that my wife won. The new development is that my teenagers are now pretty reliably better than I am: so I managed a last-place finish in all the games.

It's perhaps a bit surprising that no one else has, I guess; but it's pretty much a guarantee for us each month.

(I've also played a few expansions that no one else has recorded; but I'll guess they're just a monitoring artifact, and fail to list them.)

I added Wiener Ringstraße on this list about this time last year. It feels a little like cheating adding a print-and-play game, but I mentioned last year that this is published by Österreichisches Spiele Museum e.V., the museum/publisher behind Royal Goods and Tybor der Baumeister.

I wish the representative image for this game were different since the cards use historical imagery and look much nicer in my opinion. Wiener Ringstraße is a dice placement and set collection (not worker placement) game. I don't have another game to compare this too, but I will say that I think there is plenty of player interaction and thoughtful choices to be made.
