Well, we have completed six months. How about that? Those grey hoards are turning into painted goodness and a tremendous amount of work has been accomplished! Take a moment to pat yourself on the back...you're doing it; we're doing it!

For July, let's get those lists in like normal, but I want to do something a little special, too. Here's how it's going to work:

We are going to be brave this month. Choose a technique that has intimidated you, continues to evade you, or that you have just wanted to try. Post the technique you are going to try, and the mini you are going to try it on. Those who complete their mini will get entered into a drawing and I will send the winner a Slowfuse Gaming swag bag with a size 1 "Long Wick" Kolinsky Sable brush, a 2 oz. tin of THE best brush cleaner in the business (Jentastic's Drunken Brush Goop), and a 50 count pack of glass bead agitators for your paint pots. Sound good?

If you are new to the challenge, or have participated and didn't get Geek Gold to purchase the Painter's Challenge micro badge, please send myself or Matt (LunaWolvesMan) a message, and we'll be happy to give you some funds to purchase the badge. If you haven't had a chance to get yours yet, you can find it here:

https://boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/44497

Okay...let's get to work! cool

Death Guard Deathshroud Terminators

Death Guard Foetid Bloat Drone

Technique Challenge

Ultramarine Bike squad

I will attempt OSL on the headlights. Don't know if I will EVER get it right, but I am going to be brave.

If I have time...

I was inspired by Muzza's Fury of Dracula minis in June, so I will attempt OSL on Dr. Godalming

I was also inspired by César Mendes' Blood Rage from June, and I will paint the Sea Serpent.

OK, lets do this. Newbie reporting in.

After a looong time of letting everything painting related gather dust, I've decided to really start doing this and paint regularly (whatever that means, at least once a week would be great at the beginning).

I have three projects in progress (BSG, SW: Rebellion and Zombicide: Black Plague) from... who knows when I started them...
Zombicide interests me the least as a game and I plan to sell my copy, so finishing that first would be good because 1) I could actually sell it (it would be hard in its current half-painted state) and 2) planning to sell it forces me a bit more to finish it quickly but also make it look good enough.

But some time consuming stuff will happen in July here. Given my limited time to paint, I don't want to be overenthusiastic. My - hopefully - realistic goals are:
Strip the Zombicide minis. Half of them are almost done but I want to start them from scratch to make them all the same quality and style. Also, I've never stripped any minis yet, these are good candidates.
Try out zenithal priming. Again, something I've never tried before and I plan to simply glaze over the zenithal to quickly finish the zombies.
Stretch goal. Finish at least one type (sculpt) of zombies with zenithal + glazing.
Stretch goal#2. Finish at least one Zombicide hero mini. I plan to spend some more time with these than the zombies. Probably won't have much time to do them, but we will see.

Honestly, if by August I will have at least one zombie stripped and primed I will be happy with my progress.

Edit 07/07:
I'm done with all the stripping. Brushing all those zombies clean took a while but overall the whole process was quite simple.

I zenithal primed 11 of them, too. I think they came out quite well, at least I'm very satisfied. And maybe more importantly I learnt a lot about paint consistency and how to use my airbrush. I think I have a good idea how to avoid that slight spottiness (that's only visible on the photos, thankfully).

I’m aiming to complete Ares and Orion this month. Not particularly ambitious, but I want to try my hand at non-metallic metals which I expect will take some time to get right.

I’ve tried so many metallic gold paints and been unhappy with them that I’d be happy with something halfway there with NMM.

Update 03/07
Ares getting there. A few more goes with glazing to smooth out and I’ll be happy.

Update 08/07
Orion and Aphrodite. I tried different methods to get the NMM effect for these. For Ares I did several passes using loaded brush over a zenithal primer coats. For Aphrodite I blocked-in the mid tone, white and black, and then glazed the transitions. Orion was a combination of the two: block-in the three tones, then use loaded brush for the transitions and fewer glazes. Orion was the fastest to achieve the result, but the areas are smaller too, so more experimentation is needed.

I use to paint 20 years ago but it was really simple, prime, paint, dry brush and ink wash. Now 20 years later decided to get back into it. I will try to paint Poseidon which scares the crap out of me because I do not want to mess him up. So I will try Zenithal Highlighting, airbrush painting and glazing to keep the look plus water effects on base. I have never really done any of these. I just got an air brush last month.

Ok, let's do this:

Zombicide: Black Plague:
Antha (technique challenge, see below)
Cadence
Genevieve

Shadows of Brimstone:
Tentacles
Slashers
Preacher

Wrath of Kings:
The third faction painting will begin - Hadross (the underwater guys)!
Deepmen Kaxes
Deepmen Guardians

Special Technique Challenge:
Antha requires a ****load of free-hand and I've never been good at that. Well, ok, I usually don't even try. So I will paint her, free-hand and I will accept whatever outcome that may yield. Will probably post some WIP pictures on the way, to capture the last moment where she wasn't messed up .

Very Special Challenge:
Get Wrath of Kings finally to the table!
Finally achieved today - and it was worth the wait . It plays fast and fun, although the heavy reliance on dice rolls for attack resolution seriously messed me up... but that's the nature of the game and I enjoyed it nevertheless. The attack chart system is ingenious, imo and also the motivations system promises to lead to very varied games, even if the same troops are on the battlefield.

Go July!

So far i never used the wet blending technique and i wan't to try it out on the Sand Crabs and the Wasteland Terralisk.

Wasteland Warlords and Heavies

Sand Crabs

Tribal Ghost Warriors

Wasteland Teralisk

edit: Looking good so far! I think i can finish all the stuff at the end of the week. So i might add something else to my list this month.

New to this challenge, and relatively new to miniature painting. I bought some KDM stuff late last year and decided I wanted to learn to paint. So far I have completed a total of about 30 miniature figures (none of which are KDM as I don't feel I am good enough to attempt them quite yet). So essentially trying to get better so I can attempt to paint the wonderful KDM models.

I have a few games I have been slowly plodding away on, but would like to finish. At this point I have never finished any miniature project other than the initial Reaper Bones learn to paint kits I started out with.

So here are my goals for July:

Finish all the Gloomhaven figures

Finish all the Perdition's Mouth figures

Make some progress on the Barbarians Invasion figures

As my challenge.

I will attempt OSL on several of the Perdition's Mouth figures. Lanterns, magic spells, and fire effects.

Elisa (Perdition's Mouth) magical fire OSL

Simma (Perdition's Mouth) magical blue fire OSL

Acolytes (Perdition's Mouth) lantern glow OSL

I've taken the plunge. I'm trying out 40K. I have a few Imperial Guard figures to finish up (and will be proxying Dust minis for vehicles). If time permits, I'll revisit my Eldar army to finish up some odds and ends (I have several 40K armies, but haven't really played... I'm a bit of a hoarder, and not so much of a player!)

Hooray for new challenges and pushing the envelope - we'll see if I can muster up the energy/strength/time to try something new. If I do, I'll be sure to boast about it below!

Looking pretty good as the month comes to a close, I managed more than one figure a day. That's the kind of progress you need if you're gonna get any 40K games played...!

1-Jul-2018: 3 x Games Workshop Imperial Guard officers, Commissar
2-Jul-2018: 1 GW IG commissar
3-Jul-2018: 1 GW IG heavy weapons team
4-Jul-2018: 1 Toughest Girls in the Galaxy Yoko pyromaniac (i.e., an IG guardswoman with flamer). TGG figures are annoyingly tall, which I found out after I backed their kickstarter. They don't look that awesome next to GW figures. Oh well!
8-Jul-2018: 7 x Vehicles and terrain; 2 Ramshackle games APCs (proxies for IG Chimeras), 2 rock outcroppings, 3 Orc huts (terrain for Kings of War)
9-Jul-2018: 4 x GW (and other custom bits) veteran special weapons guys (old OOP IG stormtroopers)
13-Jul-2018: 1 x GW metal IG guardsman with grenade launcher
14-Jul-2018: 3 x 2 GW IG troopers, 1 GW IG trooper with grenade launcher
15-Jul-2018: 5 x GW heavy weapons teams (mortar, heavy MG) and 3 GW/Victoria minis kitbash IG troopers
17-Jul-2018: 1 x GW metal IG guardsman with heavy bolter
25-Jul-2018: 2 x GW heavy weapons teams (mortar)
26-Jul-2018: Touch up of OOP GW Eldar dire avengers
29-Jul-2018: 7 x GW plastic 40k cultists from Execution Force
30-Jul-2018: 4 x cultists
31-Jul-2018: 4 x cultists

Technique Challenge: NMM

I’ve done a fair bit of freehand and OSL over the last few months which kind of leaves NMM as a default technique, (I’m sure there are other techniques to play with but nothing that interests me springs to mind). Unfortunately nothing in my current project list is a great NMM subject so I’ve found something from the backlog.

June was a fantastically productive month. I'm excited for the July Technique Challenge, but also a little bit terrified. In the best way wow

7/31 -Technique Challenge: Non-Metalic Metal for Drokkatta of Imperial Assault. I've never tried nmm before and this is just the push I need. - Well, I gave it a shot. I'm not happy with the results; this is definitely going to take more practice. I think part of the problem was I thinned the paint too much. I'm glad I tried, but I'm definitely not this technique this month.

7/22 Gloomhaven mini - Finished the triangle/zelda looking symbol

7/23 Xcom mechs - experimented with shades over metallics and really loved the effect (and speed)

7/21 IA Sentry droids - more fun with shades!

I'm working hard on finishing The Others this summer.

So for July I want to finish a bunch of characters and another sin:

Eagle
Nicole
Phd
Doc
Keanu
Calavera
River
Skye
Baldur
Adrian
Rosario

Technique Challenge: Zenithal Priming
I've been lazy and never done this - but I did buy the paint to try it.
So I'm going to try it out on the Sin Lust.

Zenithal Avatar of Lust
(No idea why I put Sloth - he's been painted for 18 months+)

And since they're small I read it's not good to do Zenithal on them.

This month I'm supposed to throw myself into a project that I've been scared to start. So this month I'm gonna scratch build a mini. I keep saying that my scuplting ability isn't there yet but I haven't tried it. You can't get better if you don't practice.

The first time I showed Gaslands to a friend, he gave me one of these on a faded card-- a 1992 Hot Wheels Rolls-Royce Phantom 2.

So far I've ground off those weird points on the front fenders, cut out the fake tires and put big blowers in their place

This weekend I'll sketch up the two figures I'm gonna sculpt to man it. I'll be scratch building a driver and a bomb throwing passenger to ride this into the wasteland.

This is gonna be tough, but I think a month is a good timeline to sculpt my first two miniatures.

---UPDATE July 2nd:

Made a cutout in the hood for a big engine I looted from another car. I really warped the hood badly when I broke off the front post, but was able to cover it up with the engine.

---UPDATE July 11th:

After tons of failed attempts, I have my first armature most of the way done. In a couple hours, the putty will be set enough to set in the shoulders and arms position. In the back you can see the new wheels I took off the same car I gutted for the exaust pipes.

I decided to start the driver first, as he has the simpler pose. I watched some of Tom Mason's videos and wrote down all his measurements. The proportions seem to work well at 20mm, but boy are armatures hard to make. I feel I did all right for my first try.

---UPDATE July 15th:

Building up bulk on the form. I think k I'm using to much hardener in my green stuff mix. It's hard to get thin layers on. But I'm happy with the pose. It looks right in the car, but may not seat quite right. I guess we'll see. Next up, clothing!

---UPDATE July 17th:

Made some major progress tonight. I came into this expecting to fail, and badly. But I think it's looking good. It's my first sculpture, and I'd almost be happy painting it up the way it is now. I've got a few more plans for it though.

---UPDATE July 20th:

Hung out at a friend's place and worked on this guy on Wednesday. I'm so proud of how he came out! These are images from the first test fitting. I had to bend the arm, and really messed it up in the process. But nothing I can't fix.
Tonighti fix the armand start the second armature! I am so pumped for this project right now.

I've been dying to make some terrain for Frostgrave so I'm going to use this list as an excuse to jump in. I want to finish a couple of broken walls and a toxic pool and maybe attempt a rope bridge for FG: Archipelago. The new-to-me techniques will be building with foam and using resin for the pool. Resin on terrain and bases has always intrigued me. I like the look but it scares the crap out of me to potentially ruin something I've spent time painting. I may also attempt to make a swamp base or two with resin as water feature.

OK, I didn't completely finish last month's challenges due to an emergency health related family trip and another (more fun) trip to Portland for a week.

Things I plan to do this month:

Imperial Assault: I plan to try out the new (to me) technique of wet blending on both of these guys.
Captain Terro
Jabba the Hut

Mansions of Madness:
Mi-Go
Byakhee

Gloomhaven:
The intro characters. Starting with Scoundrel and Tinker since my wife and I chose them to start playing. Finished Cragheart and Brute just in time (hours before we had our first 4 player game) to play! Now I'm finishing up the group.
Scoundrel
Tinker
Cragheart
Brute
Mindthief
Spellweaver

Bonus:
Descent spidersx5
Descent zombies x 5 (will also be using these for Mansions of Madness since those minis are crap)

Hello. I've never done this before, but this looks to be just the thing to help me finish this. So tired of doing zombie orcs...

This month I WILL finish painting up all the monsters for Zombicide:Green Horde.

I've been working on these guys for the last 2-3 months and have made a pretty good dent in them, but I'd like to finish all the monsters in the base boxed set this month.

This is what I have left.

7 Orc Runners
7 Orc Walkers (Pose 1)
7 Orc Walkers (Pose 2)
7 Orc Walkers (pose 3)
1 Orc Necromancer

Stretch Goal :
Catapult

As for my Technique, I want to try to gorify things up a bit. I bought a tube of the UHU glue a while back, but haven't cracked it open yet. looking forward to figuring out how to do large strings of bloody gob and yet keep the mini playable.

I'd like to join.

My new technique for this month is: Get $#@! Done. I have planned to use this technique in the past but something shiny always gets in the way.

Last week I assembled and primed all the Fantasy Orcs from my grey pile of shame. I am going to do a speed paint (prime grey, wash black, base coat color, wash, quick touch-up) all of them and hope to complete them in about 1 month.

ORCS:
Azhag
10 gobo spider riders
Squig Launcher
5 boar riders
8 gobo wolf riders
40 common gobos
39 orc boys
20 night gobos
20 arrow boys
80s Orc Shaman

Took a minute to finish the flea market find Orc Shaman that I am using as an apprentice in my Frostgrave warband. No he is not a Chronomancer.
