For the purposes of this list, a tabletop miniatures game is one that is (intended to be) played with miniature models, not counters or abstract "meeples", and that regulates distances by measurement, without any form of grid (hex etc) or area or point movement.

Please add games to make this list as complete as possible. However, no expansions please, nor multiple editions of the same game.

(Games that are playable with or without a grid are OK, but please add a note about this when submitting a game to the list or I may delete it as a grid-only game added mistakenly.)

NB: Lance maintains a similar list for grid-based games that are otherwise in a "tabletop spirit": Board constrained Tabletop Miniatures Games

This is basically two games in one, a battle-level game in the style of WHFB, with single-based figures drawn up in ranks and files, and a skirmish game where everyone moves individually.

Comes with a proprietary setting and dedicated lines of 28mm figures from Fireforge (though at least the two factions included in the KS, Undead and Northmen, would be easy enough to proxy from other fantasy or in the latter case historical ranges).

Hows this for an unusual theme? Naval warfare during the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 1590s. Korean turtle-ships face galleys filled with samurai.

Currently available on preorder from MT Miniatures, to be released in May '21.

An interesting miniature game that is more like an RPG, but can be played competitive. There is also an older edition from 2017.

"Eldfall Chronicles is a fantasy and RPG-inspired tabletop skirmish game with unique and collectible miniatures that immerses the players in a world where battle is commonplace.
You will face both conflict and ancient terror, against which you must depend on your own skill and cunning to prevail. Alternatively, you can join forces with trusted allies and face the battles together! Players can enjoy two styles of play, either pitting their skill and tactics against each other or teaming up against the game itself.

Gather your champions, clash with your opponents, tame terrible beasts, and survive to tell the tale!"

Solo, Coop, VS game modes.

1-48TACTIC is a fast space cinematic skirmish scale tabletop miniatures game that uses stat cards and tokens to produce a realistic simulation with no need for consulting tables or or doing complex calculations. Focus on WHAt You do!

In 1-48TACTIC you command a small force based on a real world army of WWII and attempt to attain victory over your opponents with your superior tactics and a little luck! The aim of these rules is to provide the simplest possible set of wargame rules that generate a fast playing cinematic game and which gives an involving, passionate and satisfying experience, but also respects real battlefield tactics simulated with intuitive and realistic mechanics. The focus is on small scale action, typically from a section (4-5 figures) to a whole infantry squad per side, but the whole game can be scaled up or down at will without bogging down thanks to 1-48TACTIC robust engine and unique command and control system The gameplay is involving, passionate and satisfying, and can be experienced at its fullest already with a squad for each player composed of as few as four miniatures!

1-48TACTIC is played on a board as small as 60x60 cm (2'x2') or as much larger as you like.

The game is generally played by two people, each in command of a single squad, such as the defenders of Stalingrad or the Wehrmacht 6th Army. A player force don't need to be limited to a single squad however, and three or four players games can be lot of fun!

Rules for the Wars of the Roses. Card-based activation, and an excuse for getting out your much-neglected twelve-sided dice - a single twelve-sider per player is the only dice needed to play this.

Post-apocalyptic skirmish game. A dedicated range is upcoming, but also meant to be playable with any genre-appropriate figures you may have already. The core rules are minimalistic enough to fit on a single albeit double-sided card - as you might expect further cards defining scenarios, figures, etc. do a lot of the lifting rules-wise.

Teams of five face one another in science-fictional combat, apparently as some sort of blood sport. Death is cheap, however, as eliminated figures return next turn thanks to "medical advances".

Battle Havoc! is easy to learn and play fantasy wargame.

The game doesn’t have any particular scale, but manufacture recommends either 28mm or 10mm miniatures.

Strange miniatures game where the primary part of the game is played with miniatures and template movement on a board, but there's a side part where you use a deck of cards to build a city with buildings that pay for cards and grant various abilities.

The board starts empty except for one leader on each side, and players can summon more models into play as the game progresses and play cards to add terrain to the board.

Also listed under the Legends of Signum: Battle for Vallor starter set.

Game of tribal wars in pre-Roman Britain, with an appendix on adding Roman forces.

Focuses on psychology and daring deeds by champions - the movement rules for the mass of tribesmen are simple in the extreme, and the pre-battle preparation phase is as important as the fighting itself.

Comes with basing standards for 6mm, 15mm, and 25mm, but from skimming the rules it seems it could be played with figures of any scale based any which way with minimal modifications.

What the subtitle says; fast-play rules for ACW riverine warfare. Deliberately game first, simulation second.

The one review here on BGG is quite negative, but I gather it's popular in some circles.

Semi-historical skirmish game pitting witchfinders against witches, vampires, barguests and other abominations in early 17th century England. Meant for 28mm figures but not tied to any particular range of figures.

A QRS and various other paraphernalia are available from the official site, but the rules themselves are out of print and apparently hard to get hold of.

I've not really found out anything about the mechanics beyond what can be divined from the QRS.

WW3 rules - I’m not quite sure if that’s supposed to be a Cold War Gone Hot scenario or something more modern like a 21C USA-PRC clash - that adopt a 1”=100m scale. As you’ll imagine, they’re somewhat on the zoomed out and abstract end.

Fantasy skirmish. Apparently primarily hex-based but with an option for measured movement. Combat is resolved with special eight-sided dice.

Intended to be usable with any fantasy figures.

Napoleonic Wargame Rules, plus a Guide to the era (which takes up the first half of this hardback book).

D10-based rules, using a proliferation of charts/tables. The claim is that it can provide games for Brigades/Divisions/Corps and up to Army level, you just adapt the unit scaling according to the battles you want to refight.

Card-activated turns, a lot more reliance on command & control, and proper orders, in an attempt to get away from the 'helicopter pilot view'.

Not played a full proper game myself, just trialled some aspects, and my thoughts were it probably has some potential for solitaire gaming where you want to take the time and spend the patience to really play through long battles.

However, it could have done with some proper proofreading before being printed, and I would not use these particular rules to introduce a 40K player to Napoleonic warfare. Cheap copies often appear as remaindered stock in bookshops here in the UK (where I got mine, for £5, several years ago.)

Quick play rules (web-published only as I type this) for French Revolutionary War, Napoleonic Wars, South American Wars of Liberation and Crimean War.

64 pages, using 1d6/2d6 or even 1d12 for random resolution. Measurement by BWs (Base Widths), units use 2 action points per turn, usually leading to making one action for each point spent. There's elements in there to provide added detail, such as the ability to grade units with 'Two Rank Doctrine', Artillery can be 'Field' or 'Position', Dismounted cavalry carbine shooting, and troops could be graded as 'Zealous'. Quite extensive tables provide this information to help define the various armies for the periods mentioned.

I've not played with these myself yet, but there's some potential in here that maybe worth trialling if folks want quick-play games. Free to download, a hardback copy can be purchased apparently.

Fast-play WW2 aerial combat game.

Ideal for small models - 1/300 or 1/600 scale - but can also cope with the 1/144 scale too.

Requires D6s and D8s, ruler and protractor, and a flat playing surface. Some of the dice are used to denote Altitude and Speed, both of which are placed on the aircraft model's base.

Follows an IGO-UGO turn format, with random last turn game end once 6 turns have been played. And some concise aircraft lists are included in the rules, providing the gaming details of Type, Points, Damage Points (DP), Weapons and Notes.

It looks simple enough to pick up and play without too much rules-crunching - available on Wargames Vault.
