Last Saturday, I got together with 3 old friends for a day of boardgaming. Here's what we played:

Decrypto - Hard to believe, but here it is July, and I still hadn't played this very buzzworthy title. Thankfully, I was able to finally try it out; even more thankfully, it lived up to its reputation. It's very clever and definitely gives the old gray cells a workout. My partner and I were very much on the same page, which was satisfying. Our opponents were not, which explained their ending the game with 2 black chips, while we had 1 white one. Very good and I shall soon have a copy of my own.

Kreta - Here's another game I hadn't played in at least a decade. It's a good, not great, area majority game from Stefan Dorra where the order of the area scorings is hidden, but somewhat under the control of the players. The pieces are placed and moved via cardplay that is strikingly reminiscent of Concordia, except Kreta came 8 years earlier. I concentrated on one half of the board and ignored the other half, got an early lead, and was able to ride it to a fairly comfortable victory, possibly due to the number of scoring cards in my portion of the board. It was good to play this again, but it's showing its age a bit, so if it takes another decade to get my next play in, it won't break my heart.

The Mind - We next chose to play a game that was still in shrink wrap. I had read the rules online a while back, so I volunteered to quickly read through them and teach the others. While I was doing that, the other three played The Mind, a game I still haven't played and which really doesn't interest me much. But it was fun to see the others play it; there were quite a few gestures, which they seemed to feel was quite natural; I wonder what the "purists" would say. Anyway, they got to Level 8 and enjoyed themselves while I was reading away. I'll probably play this at some point, but I'm in no real rush to do so--it just isn't my kind of game.

Santa Maria - This was the game I was reading the rules to and the unqualified highlight of the day. It's by the designers of Doodle City and Avenue and bears a small resemblance to those games, but it's considerably more meaty. The players are building their settlements in the New World and use dice drafting to activate the tiles they build. It has quite a few clever touches and is definitely multifaceted. We got some rules wrong (the curse of learning on the fly!) and made some tactical errors, but we all liked it. Like Decrypto, this was a game I was thinking of buying and this experience confirmed that it was worth the purchase, which has enriched my game collection while lightening my wallot. A superior middleweight that I hope will be popular with my other game groups.

Azul - One of our group left and there was just enough time for a short game, so we pulled out Azul, allowing us to play the two leading contendors for the SdJ in one session. It's a reasonable enough game, but too abstract for my tastes and the fact that it has the potential to be quite mean-spirited doesn't help my opinion. But I don't mind playing it and it wrapped up a very satisfying day of good gaming and good fellowship.

Recent Plays: 7/10–7/16

I'm heading to Oregon for vacation tonight (HOORAY!), so a quick pre-trip update, as there are lots of plans for gaming while we're away.

- Fjords: I love this game so much! 1 poor decision in the final round lost me the game by 1 point!
- Raptor: It is hard to win as the scientists if you never draw your reinforcements cards...
- Schotten Totten
- Ginkgopolis
- Galaxy Trucker x2: Loving this new addition to the collection! So much fun!!!
- Feudum: Second play with basic rules (no advanced) and only with 2 and we are still really enjoying it! Next game will be with the advanced rules now that we have the basic game concepts down. It is a lot to grok, but we learned a ton from game 1 to 2 and can't wait to see the game open up with the advanced options.
- Hive x3: Summer nights at Blossom Music Center to hear the Cleveland Orchestra is the perfect time for Hive!
- Tokyo Highway: It's official...I'm terrible at this game!
- Let's Make a Bus Route
- The Climbers
- Troyes: What an excellent game!!! I'm so impressed by it every time we play it. I think Xavier Georges is climbing the ranks to become one of our favorite designers!

Plays from last weekend:
Orléans: Glad to finally get to try the base game, but I think I like the Invasion Co-Op ruleset more
Heaven & Ale: My game group has been raving about this one and I finally got a chance to try it. I definitely need more plays to form a solid opinion. The end game scoring is unique and hard to grasp.
Welcome To...: Always a fun play
Space Base: Does Machi Koro concepts in an actually fun way
Gloomhaven: Started a solo campaign, three scenarios down
