I played this last night with my pal Ryan. It was out first time in a little while so it was good to get a game in.

I was soundly beaten by his aggressive Tokugawa. He wiped my out in the eastern part of the map pretty early on, catching me without the cards I needed to get my guys fighting for me. After that he steadily trundled west whilst I bounced off him on each attempt to slow him down.

I regained some honour on the last turn by throwing my leader into a massive battle to die facing the enemy and suffer an auto-loss rather than meekly surrender at the end of the last turn and shamefully lose on VPs.

Fun game! Here's a terrible mobile photo of the end of the thing:

Continuing this Vassal game against Edwin. The front is pretty static. He cut off my supply into Belgium but I took it back with the help of some poison gas. Dirty stuff. Nothing much else has changed hands.

I admit that it doesn't sound like much is happening but it is a pretty tense game.

I have it set up and ready to go but have not made a single move due to a lot going on(vacation, work, and going to my 50th high school reunion). August will be a busy month too so will see how far I can progress. I realized too setting it up again how much of a stacking nightmare it is to set up besides an ugly map.

A unique scenario (from Special Ops #6 designed by Perry Cocke) where the Germans starting positions are all pre-designated and the Americans get 3 (or 4) specific hex's in which to start their attack from.

Not a lot of play the last month or so due to that enemy of gamers everywhere - REAL LIFE!..but we did get a couple of sessions in..

When last we looked it was the Seasonal Interphase for Fall of 1965 and LBJ (me) was about to bite the bullet on further commitment to the rapidly escalating Vietnamese conflict..the South Vietnamese government was in total disarray due to a coup and it's army all but completely frozen in place..

I decided to go in hard on US commitment again earmarking the 4th and the 23rd (Americal) divisions and substantially increasing the amount of air power and airmobile assets..a regiment of South Korean marines also became available which was immediately dispatched to the city of Hue to boost the SVN garrison there..

I also purchased (for a relatively high initial outlay of resources) all five battalions of ARVN Rangers..

Ho Chi Minh (Alan) built a lot of VC units (still only one division of NVN regulars so far) which he committed across the entire map with an emphasis on the high population areas in the north and the Mekong Delta..

The two US divisions..

..the 23rd while not automatically airmobile has two very large brigades (4 battalions each) and a hugely powerful attached artillery battalion..I sent this division to Cam Ranh Bay to assist the 1st Cav in the central provinces

..the 4th is also not intrinsically airmobile but has a couple of very mobile (on roads) mechanised infantry units and an attached tank battalion..this division went to the Mekong Delta..

Initial placement..

Last week's session.. we began the first Operations Turn of the season (there are two turns per season)..

Alan handed the initiative to me (always the NLF player's choice) twice and I began by conducting two Search&Destroy operations in the north using the US 3rd Marines and attached units..and for the first time ARVN Rangers..

A short explanation on how the Rangers are used..the are are five Ranger battalions which are held off map..at the beginning of an operation if the US player wishes to make use of them a die is rolled and that number of Ranger battalions (a 6 means none are available) can be placed with the other units designated to take part in the operation..they then included in the operation as extra units..the Rangers are great hex occupiers, very mobile, cheap to airmobilise and if casualties need to be taken can be eliminated in lieu of other Free World units..when destroyed they can be returned to their off map box at a cost of 5 SVN reinforcement points and are available for the next operation..

The two S&D operations netted me a VC regiment dispersed (almost as good as destroying it but the manpower points are not lost to the NLF player) and one unidentified VC unit forced out of mountainous terrain and into a hex containing a road (good for me)..that VC unit was pretty much doomed but rolled a very high Alert Move and was able to slip through my surrounding units and their ZOCs..hopefully I'll be able to nab him next turn...so two pretty good results for me

Photo illustrating the above Ops..note the two regiments of South Koreans dug in at Kontum and Pleiku with a division of NVA regulars (apparently) closing in...

Meanwhile in Hanoi...

Excited to get back into some wargaming after not playing anything in the genre for a few years.

First topic to explore is the French and Indian War. I've picked up three games on the topic, that should offer different perspectives: Wilderness War, 1754: Conquest – The French and Indian War, and the pictured Empires in America (second edition).

Empires in America is up first, because it's the easiest to get played. I don't need to arrange a session or teach any rules - instead it's living on my table as I work through how to play, and will then get at least a couple of sessions through the month.

Keeping my fingers crossed that one of the others will also grace a table this month though.

All I need now are book recommendations.

After procrastinating about soloing Normandy '44 for well over a year, I finally found the courage (?) to break this game out and play it for real. When I first picked it up, I went so far as to punch (and clip) the counters, read the rules, and then play a couple of the shorter campaigns solo on Vassal, but then put the physical copy away until yesterday evening (when I set it up on the dining room table and played the first turn).

As we're having guests over this weekend and will need the table, I'm aiming to just play the short scenario. So far, so good. I finished the third turn this evening.

And at the end of Turn 3, the Americans had made almost no progress at Utah Beach. In fact, they had a few setbacks as a couple airborne units were reduced/lost. The beachhead at Omaha, however, has exploded into a full breakout towards St. Lo. and there are very few German units standing in the way.

Meanwhile, the British captured Bayeux and, with the Canadians, have penetrated to the outskirts of Caen. Their airborne has taken a bit of a beating; three German armoured divisions are operating in the area.

Tomorrow I have to decide if some of those German armoured units will head off towards St. Lo or stay and try to drive the British back into the sea.
