I make videos covering X-Wing expansions so the early release was a big deal for me and my main draw at the convention this year. I got in line first thing when the doors opened at 10:00am but they were already sold out of two of the three faction conversion kits, presumably from the Thursday mad buying rush. Still, the line was amazingly short (about half an hour from start to check out, including time spent browsing the shop), and I ended up with a core set, the Scum & Villainy conversion kit and one of each Wave 1 expansion.

Next we headed to CoolStuff Inc's booth. I was hoping to find a copy of the recently-released Container 10th Anniversary Edition but had no luck. They did have a large ding and dent shelf with some good stuff on it, but the discounted pricing for damaged boxes wasn't particularly good. They had a few copies of the mecha battle game GKR Heavy Hitters there, marked down about $7 from their normal $125 asking price. I'm enough of a gamer snob that paying $7 more for an undamaged product isn't much of a big deal, especially when the game costs so much to begin with.

Next I beelined to Petersen Games, purveyors of all things Cthulhu Wars, as picking up some expansions for that game was #2 on my Gen Con hit list this year. I'm a recent convert to the game, having picked it up during an online sale earlier this year. I was worried that they might not have some of the earlier expansions in stock but they surprised me by having copies of pretty much everything. I ended up double-dipping from them, initially picking up the Sleeper faction and the upgraded 3mm cardboard faction and score sheets, which are super nice, and then stopped back again later in the day to grab the new Ancients expansion and also a set of chunky plastic gates to replace the tokens from the core game.

While at Petersen Games I got a look at the miniatures for their upcoming game of god vs. god warfare, and I'm happy to say that they are continuing the tradition that Cthulhu Wars started with ridiculously huge miniatures and amazing sculpts. It made me kind of sad not to have backed the game during the Kickstarter campaign, but having one Petersen game to catch up on with expansions and upgrades is already expensive enough, and I don't feel like I've come anywhere close to mining the depths of strategy in Cthulhu Wars.

Next we headed for CMON. There was a line to get into their small, cramped shop area. More and more publishers are doing the closed shop instead of the open booth format from the past. I'm sure that it's due to shoplifting which is sad. The majority of booths did have the open floor plan so window browsing was relatively easy to do, although I did skip a few companies because I didn't want to wait in the long line of people who were there for some new hotness or other just to have a look around.

While at CMON, I got a look at this game in the demo area. It's got lots of nice-looking miniatures, which is always a plus for me, and the game looked interesting enough but I already have a bunch of similar games and I don't know enough about this one yet to make a snap buying decision on it. They did have plenty of copies for sale in their shop. I also got a look at the giant Cthulhu from the recent Death May Die Kickstarter campaign, which is even bigger in real life than it appears in pictures. I feel like they have a lock on the title of "biggest game piece" for a good long time (maybe forever) with that thing. It's stupid huge.

This is a game that I read about awhile back, thought it looked cool and had tabbed in the back of my mind for awhile before forgetting about it. I was pleasantly surprised to see it in Asmodee's booth. There was an empty demo table so we sat down to play and I really enjoyed it's innovative mechanic. It feels a little bit like Stratego - you're trying to figure out which screen is hiding your opponent's princess using a mirror carrier, while at the same time trying to sneak your own princess across the board to reach the other side. Spot the enemy princess and she gets sent back to her starting position. I figured my daughter would really love this game, and I enjoyed it as well, so I grabbed a copy. The fact that the artwork is from the great Naiade certainly doesn't hurt the game, either.

I always try to come away from Gen Con with a game that was a surprise to me; usually a game that grabs me because of its aesthetics but also reveals fun and interesting design. Princess Jing was that game for me this year. Even though it's a game I had heard of prior to Gen Con, I had all but forgotten about it so it was still a surprise as well.

While at Asmodee, I noticed this game sitting on the table next to the Princess Jing demo table, and the enormous plastic tanker trucks/hourglasses immediately caught my attention. We were offered a demo and accepted. This is another two player game, featuring a lot of dice rolling and then spending the icons to buy cards which give you points or fuel or other bonuses. The kicker is that while you take your turn you're either refueling your truck by holding it so sand fills the tank while your opponent furiously rolls dice to try to force you to stop, or your racing to roll and reroll dice to get the icons you need while your truck's fuel is draining away, and if it runs out and you haven't finished you lose any unspent dice. It's a really neat mechanic, and the friend I demoed it with ended up buying a copy.

Weta Workshop had demo tables with copies of a game based on the movie District 9. The miniatures looked fantastic, although they were resin so I'm assuming that the final game will use plastic of some sort and be slightly less impressive but still, this game has some big chunky trucks, a huge mech and loads of soldiers, gangsters and of course the insectile Prawn aliens. The cool hook to the game is that it takes place during the events of the movie, with NPC characters carrying out their own objectives, culminating in a final act with Wikus in the mech laying waste to everything around it, and you've either done well enough up to that point to weather the storm or you're in trouble. It looked great on the table and I have high hopes for this one. We got a nice overview of the game but it was late in the day so unfortunately didn't have time for a demo. It's going to be on Kickstarter either later this year or early 2019. Definitely one to watch if you like District 9 and dudes on a map games.

IDW was running demos for this upcoming board game based on the Batman: The Animated Series from the 90s (which in my opinion is the best version of Batman ever made). The game is fully cooperative with players taking the roles of Batman and his Batfriends (Robin, Batgirl, Commissioner Gordan and Catwoman) and protecting Gotham from waves of enemies attacking from all sides. It kind of had a Ghost Stories vibe to it - the moving around the square to fight enemies on every side - but it's not nearly as difficult. In fact, the combat is so abstracted and overpowered that it feels a little ridiculous. For example, Batman opened the first round by throwing a batarang around the city, knocking out all of the named villains (one on each side). That's a heck of a batarang upgrade! However, it's also limited to twice per game, and each game consists of several chapters before you win. We played only a single early round so I imagine that the game gets tougher as you go. After the heroes attempt to clear out as many villains and henchmen as possible, the remaining bad guys get the opportunity to blow up buildings and kill civilians, which move counters to failure states for the players. As a fan of the series, I enjoyed this game and will probably pick it up when it releases later this year. It's got nice minis for the heroes (although the bad guys are tokens) and neat 3D buildings so the heroes can take the the rooftops. This game wasn't even on my radar (I backed Monolith's Batman Kickstarter earlier this year so my inner Batman fanboy was pretty sated) and the fact that it's fun was a nice surprise.

Giga-Robo had a successful Kickstarter campaign awhile back and designer Alex Cheng had a booth in the main exhibit hall this year (we first spotted this game in the indie games room at Gen Con several years back). I had the opportunity to be a playtester for the game and was happy to provide a preview video on YouTube for the Kickstarter campaign. The game was in very nice form at Gen Con, having gone through several component and design updates since the playtest version. I'm still excited about this game, and if you're a fan of all things mecha (Gundam, Voltron, Giant Robo, etc) you should have Giga-Robo on your radar as well.

I wanted to stop by Smirk and Dagger to have a look at this Cthulhu-themed re-implementation of Kerplunk. The 3D tower with all of the plastic tentacles sticking out in every direction certainly looks cool. Unfortunately, just as we got to the booth the demo guy apologized and headed off to parts unknown, so we were left to play around with it a bit and look at the other components. The $60 price tag and my uncertainty about whether or not there's actually a fun game in there held me back from purchasing a copy. I'd definitely like to try it at some point, though.

This game wasn't actually at Gen Con for sale, since it's a Target exclusive. I picked up a copy the day before leaving for the show (technically Gen Con day 1) so I'm counting it as part of my Gen Con haul anyway.

This is basically Incan Gold with some light engine building thrown in. It's from Red Raven so of course the artwork and design elements are both really well done. We've played this a couple of times since coming home from the con and my kids are already big fans. I highly recommend seeking out a copy if you have a nearby Target. It's cheap - $25 - and it includes an insert from GameTrayz, which is excellent and makes setup and tear down a breeze.

Unfortunately they didn't have many on hand (30 copies were being sold at noon and there was already a line waiting when we got to their booth a bit after 11:00. I didn't want to wait an hour for a copy. Not a big deal, as I'm pretty sure it'll be in stores soon.

This was another of the big hot Gen Con releases this year. It was sold out quickly. It looks interesting; seems like every game needs to have a crazy unique gimmick these days - Gizmos with the marble randomizer, Detective with its app plus actual internet detective work, Tower of Madness with it's... tower and this game with actual electric circuits that you're trying to connect to a rocket ship. It looks interesting enough, but at a certain point I have to wonder is the gimmick is all there is to a game or if there's actually a game hiding behind it. I've enjoyed the previous "Forbidden" games so I do have high hopes for this one. Looking forward to trying it out when it releases.

Mattel had a new expansion for one of the games I picked up from last year's Gen Con (I had a friend who went and was willing to bring a few games back for me). It's a fun family game but I'm not sure that adding more to it is a good idea since the game already has a tendency to last just a bit longer than it feels like it should. I might pick this expansion up later if the kids show a renewed interest in playing it. As with the base game, the components and artwork for this expansion are fantastic.

Fantasy Flight's hot new game is KeyForge, a Richard Garfield design that they're calling a "Unique Deck Game." You buy a deck comprised of cards from a pool of over 300, and your deck isn't exactly the same as any other single deck. There's no deckbuilding or customization at all, the decks are locked in so if you buy one and you get tired of it you can buy another one and get a completely different experience. It's a neat idea, and as someone who doesn't have the time, money or interest in buying into any kind of CCG that required blind buys and hours of deckbuilding I'm intrigued by the concept. I didn't wait for a demo but one of my friends did and he came away impressed. It's certainly something I'm willing to try when it comes out later this year. The buy-in is pretty low and if I decide that it's not something I want to continue with I won't be stuck with a ton of useless valueless cards.
