2018 in gaming:
I’ll be honest and say I haven’t gamed as much in 2018 as I have done in previous years. I think socially things have got busier, my kids are going to bed later which means the time I have in the evenings to play games has become reduced. My opinion is that if I am spending time with a board game, I generally like longer play times, however that has prevented some games from getting played in a single evening. I have played a lot of games which I’ve set up and then put under the sofa until the next evening, but it’s not possible to do that with all games.
In terms of purchases, I don’t think I’ve been able to keep up. I would say 75% of what I’ve received has been through GMT P500 and reading rules and then giving new games the necessary love and attention hasn’t always happened and to some extent my rankings reflect my rose-tinted specs for my older games which I’m more comfortable with the rules.
Resolution for 2019: Buy fewer games and enjoy what I’ve got!

It’s slightly odd that this has made position 20 on my list because I’ve only played it once as a learning play, but the enjoyment I got from learning the rules, watching playthroughs on YouTube and then moving counters around on the board took me right back to when I first started this hobby 5 years ago and began to get to grips with boardgaming as a whole. There is a solitaire variant which I am looking to try out (Solo Mode). Whether that works well or not, the chit draw in this one makes it interesting enough to play all sides which I don’t normally like to do.

I’ve finally painted all of the minis! It’s only taken me 2 years to do it, but we got there! This one gets a boost to its ranking because I’ve played it with my 6 year old son and we both enjoy it. Playing solo is fun too as you power up your mechs and try to complete whatever mission is thrown at you. I like the ways you can build control into your grid, which can often be scuppered by a damage card or two.

I backed this on Kickstarter because it would be rude not to when it was created by solo ‘royalty’ . I do enjoy this one, but haven’t played it as much as I should have done. For me it’s a quick playing Mage Knight / COIN hybrid. I’ve beaten the first 3 difficulties in the first 3 tries so I will have to look at which point I get before I need to retry.

Expansions: Forsaken Lore

Another game I got very early on in my collection and one I still enjoy playing. There are very few Ameritrash games in my collection, mainly because this one has got that base covered. It can be random and punishing at times, but a lot of fun, especially when there are some close escapes!

A completely unique game which feels like a cousin of the ‘choose your own adventure’ books I used to love so much as a kid. I finally managed to beat the Voracious Goddess curse after the fourth attempt. Previous knowledge of the map did help, and I’ve worked out hunting is very important to replenish your deck (as well as restoring the game to allow wildlife to grow back). I’m in for the new Kickstarter for more content, so will have to get a shift on with the base game curses…

This took a lot more work than it should have done to get to where I felt it was playable. There are well publicised issues with the rulebook, but what may be a little less publicised is that this is actually a good game underneath that. If you spend the time to get to grips with it, what you do get is a European WW2 campaign with hand management playable in a couple of hours. The bot seems to work well, and is easy to implement.

Me and COIN have had an on-off relationship. I’ve finally got over the hurdle of understanding the system, and with Pendragon seem to have got over the hurdle with the bots. This might be the biggest, most complicated one, but after a few plays I am seeing that as a positive. It just seems to make sense, including the bot instructions. It has however cost me a lot of money as I’ve invested in GMTs COINfest, and am expecting Falling Sky + Ariovistus, Fire in the Lake and A Distant Plain to hit the doorstep soon

This is one of my shorter games that I can pull out when I still fancy playing a board game but I don’t necessarily have time for something else. I realise that doesn’t sound very glowing but I do enjoy it. I’m rubbish at it, but I do like the puzzle of trying to build an engine which will see me reach the win conditions (I haven’t managed it yet). Whether I’ll eventually look at some of the expansions I don’t know because I cant judge how much they will dilute the single player game.

This isn’t my normal cup of tea (or mead?) – I bought it as a panic buy about ten minutes before the 1PG meetup at the UK Games Expo. It was a lot cheaper than I’d seen it before so I thought why not? Carrying it back with me now means I have one arm longer than the other, but that’s an advantage when reaching over to pick up one of the millions of components this game has. In terms of gameplay, the solo mode is clever how it blocks your next turn, and there seems to be an element of risk and reward when picking up new islands / buildings as you need to block off the negative VPs. Another game where I’ve got nowhere near winning but enjoyed trying!

One of the main victims of my limited evening time. The sprawl is just a bit too much for me to easily fit under the sofa so I haven’t managed to get it out as much as I’d like. I’ve even added the contents of Stations but not got around to playing it. Not played in 2018 but here on merit.

Expansions: Close Encounters, Replicators

One of the things I seem to struggle with when adding expansions to games I am already familiar with is to then be able to feel like I’m playing correctly with the new content. I don’t know whether it’s because it messes up the order of the rules I have in my head or something else, but I seemed to struggle when adding Replicators to this game. The terrain tiles are a very nice touch and the replicators a good twist on the Alien Empires scenario.

Expansions: Invaders from Afar, Wind Gambit, Rise of Fenris

See Space Empires above re: adding expansions to games and here for an example of other ways to do it. I bought the Wind Gambit because I was buying some other items and tacked it on to get free shipping. Added contents to the box and then completely ignored it. I think my brain doesn’t like change. I then bought Rise of Fenris which is an example of how to add content. The campaign is just drip-fed content, but a much more interesting method for doing it! This has breathed new life into the game for me, hence its improved position again this year. The campaign even made me feel like I was a better Scythe player at the end of it!

A fall off the top spot for last year’s number 1. I’ve played a lot of computer games in the past, and currently have a lot of games in my Steam library. With a lot of them, I’ve played half-way through the game and then left it, either to play something else or because I got stuck and never gone back to them because it’s hard to drop right back in. This is an issue I’ve identified with Gloomhaven. I played it intensively for a couple of months last year which merited putting it on top spot. However, due to a hiatus from playing it, I’ve found it very hard to get it back off the shelf. I haven’t played it this year purely because of that hurdle of getting back into the swing of my campaign.

Mage Knight has really suffered from my reduced playing time and expanded collection. Saturday nights were reserved solely for playing Mage Knight, which I often used to look forward to during the week. As more games have come in, it’s been pushed down the pecking order and not played as much which in turn has reduced my enjoyment as it’s been harder to play well. I still think it’s a brilliant game and it holds a special place on my list, but we just seem to be growing apart.

The old faithful which can be pulled out for a play very occasionally, but allows you to dive right back in. The procedural nature means that all of the information is outlined on the player aids. Always fun and very often a challenge. Such a smooth and easy AI to implement.

Expansions: Labyrinth: The Awakening

My first GMT Games purchase way back when, so I would say this is to blame for all of the other GMT Games on this list. It still rides high on the list because of the amount of challenge it provides as you battle to manage your hand against triggering events which may help the opponent compared to laying down your own plans. The back and forth is intense, and the new bot seems to work well. The expansion adds a slight tweak on the ruleset but the struggle to change governance of the resources is still there. This is a game which produces a lot of memorable moments due to card plays and events – such as a badly timed US election in my last game which changed my posture.

I still think this is two games in one. You have the attrition of the first 16 turns as you try to get your units off the beach in some sort of good order. The second 16 turns feel a lot more free; as units move around the high ground and you might start to think about moving units off the map, whilst always looking out for a counterattack or something else from the German AI.

I would say this game is well worth the effort needed to learn it. There are still some ambiguous situations that you can face as you play, but those mainly come due to the depth of the gameplay. Once you get past that, this game really thrives and you are rewarded a game which will create its own storytelling. The way communication is used works brilliantly because half of the battle is keeping your units organised enough to give them useful commands. Once you start hitting enemies that becomes even more of a challenge as you try to get your units out of harm’s way, or need to tell your machine gun to stop wasting ammo shooting at nothing helpful– definitely all part of the fun!

I’ve owned this game for quite some while. I played it recently after 18 months of it sitting on my shelf and following that I realised how great an achievement is actually inside this box. You only have to look around to see how few hex and counter wargames with full AI systems there are on the market to understand they must be difficult to create. Not only does this provide that AI, but it is easy to implement and the game itself is absorbing. You use your cards to activate your units and then once you think you’ve got a breakthrough, there might be a roadblock or blown bridge in your way which you have to think about manoeuvring around. Then after a few in-game days the tide starts turning and the AI starts attacking you!
I would go as far to say that this is a masterpiece. After 18 months of not playing, I picked it up easily thanks to the useful player aids and got straight back into it. I spent a full 2 weeks playing each evening and enjoyed every minute. I haven’t even touched the Allied solo game yet!

Expansions: Dragon King, Dung Beetle Knight, Flower Knight, Gorm, Spidicules

This arrived just too late last year to make my list, but I think I have known for 12 months that this would without doubt be my number 1. It takes me back to when I was in my early teens and enjoyed playing 40k with school friends. It’s basically a hobby in a box – assembling and painting minis, then use what you’ve built in a brutal tactical skirmish against different bad guys. Each enemy I’ve fought so far has felt different to the others (I’m on LY12).
Yes, the game can be brutal, but there are times you can mitigate against that, and the sooner you realise the characters you’ve spent time developing are basically your ammunition to be expended the sooner that doesn’t feel like a problem and you can begin to embrace the challenge of building up new survivors.
