So - I am completely flummoxed by the outbreak of solitaire gaming I see on BGG. Nothing against it, I suppose, but - I play games to spend time with people. Solitaire gaming is - generally a fifth choice, behind reading, designing, movies, and playing against an AI. But I have played five solitaire games, so - I'll pretend I'm a cool BGG hipster and rank them.

#1 - Finished (a.k.a. Bubblesort)

This is one of only two games currently in my collection which I've ever played solitaire - and the only game in my collection which is solely a solitaire game.

Why does it work for me? Well, over time I've come to realize that I have two primary requirements for solitaire games:

* The game has to be easy enough to pick up that I can just start playing again after a long layoff. Solitaire games will never hit the table regularly for me, so the rules won't lock in as they do with multiplayer games.

* The game has to stand out from solitaire card games. I played a number of traditional card deck solitaire games growing up, and - I'd really like something more than that.

These two requirements are, of course, at odds with one another.

But Bubblesort meets my requirements, as well as any solitaire game I've found so far. The objective - ordering the deck - is simple and easily understood. And there are a tractable number of options - but the options are are more involved than those in traditional deck solitaire games.

#2 - Shephy

This game left my collection close to the time Finished entered. And - I do still have the iOS implementation. I did play this 17 times; it was rather fun. But - not a keeper, in the end. It met my requirements, but - just wasn't fun enough to keep racking up plays.

#3 - Friday

This was the first solely solitaire game to enter my collection. But I soon realized that it didn't meet requirement #1 - and was too deckbuildingy - so it didn't last long.

#4 - Traditional Deck Solitaire Games

I played a number of these growing up, and have occasionally pulled a deck out since. And, undoubtedly, will again. I have at least two books of solitaire games.

Meh.

#5 - Merchant of Venus

This is - to the best of my recollection - the only multiplayer game with a solitaire variant I've actually tried. It was shortly after I was introduced to the game, and I had a business trip to Austin before I knew anyone in that area. And so I brought it along, and played it solo. Twice. And have never considered doing so again...

#6 - Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective

OK, I lied. Given the nature of this game, I decided to try it solitaire. And then to make it go away; it did nothing for me. So I tend to forget about it...
