We've played this with 4,5, and 6, and is great with 5 players (the added tension of not knowing what cards got trased makes it better with 5, I think).

Five gives you just enough 'secret info' while having enough players that it is difficult to successfully target an individual.

5-6 players seems excellent in this game, although we've played it more with 4. With 5, there's a lot more need to diversify, and more opportunity to 'steal' a lead.

Princes of Florence is an auction game that works best for 5. During the auction phase there are 7 different types of item up for auction, and no two players may buy the same type of item. Three of the types of item are landscapes (generally the least desired of the types,) and with 5 players at least one must settle for a landscape. This adds extra interest to the auction phase.

One of the best recent multiplayer games. Plays up to 6 but 5-player is just as good. Published in North America by Uberplay, a relatively new Euro-import company that is putting out several excellent games. (Though, unfortunately, two of their best games, Alhambra and Tongiaki, are *not* suitable for any more than 4 players).
I haven't played it yet, but you might look into their New England by Alan Moon.

Works best with the maximum 5 players. More chance of players ships encountering each other and fighting battles to determine who gets to plunder an island.

I've played Liberte with both four players and six players and I think that five might well be the ideal. I'm thinking there'll be enough players so that there is a lot of competition all over the board but not so many that the last rounds are too short. I also have a feeling that Warfrog's latest release, Princes of the Renaissance, will play well with five and am really dying to try it at that number.

Some games are designed for exactly N players, like Diplomacy really needs seven, and any less changes the game so much that it hurts. I think this is one of those. There are five "kingdoms" in Westros, and if one is disabled (and is played like an independent), the interplay among the remaining players changes a lot. I think this one might be a really good one for five.

Since this is a highly interactive and social game it plays best with 5 players in my opinion. The game does get easier to beat with 5 however, but that can be taken care of by starting Sauron on 10 or 12. I highly recommend this game for any number of players but with 5 it is exceptional.
