The Aeon's End Solo Marathon I ran earlier this year seemed to be quite popular and I had a blast with it, too. So, I will take it to the next level with the War Eternal Marathon. I have put some thoughts into lessons learnt and came up with a few (hopefully) improvements. More brackets, more play modes, more Aeon's End!

The first three entries into the list are reserved for the three brackets with rules, sign-up and standings during the Marathon. Below that will come the different stages of the Marathon with the market setup, fluff text and rewards.

Have fun with the game and this Marathon!

Survivor Mode Bracket

This is basically the game mode established in the last Marathon with a few minor tweaks (so make sure to read the rules, even if you participated last time). This is the most challenging game mode, but don't be afraid to try it - it's not impossible .

Overview
Every participant will choose a Mage during sign-up and will play with that mage against one Nemesis each round. One round will last about 3 weeks, within that timeframe you must defeat the boss with your mage. You will then earn a reward that you may carry over into the next boss battle.
The Marathon ends when the last Nemesis has been defeated.
The market for each round will be the same for everyone and is announced once the round starts.
The card pool comprises of the War Eternal game, The Void and The Outer Dark expansions only. No promos or Base Game cards are used for the market setup.

SignblankUp
To sign up for this bracket, just reply to this geeklist item and state which Mage you would like to play. Every Mage can only be chosen once and are distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis. However: If you are either unsure whether you will manage to get enough games in or you really want to play a certain Mage that is already taken, feel free to team up with another player (with their consent, obviously ). You can only report one result between the two of you, but you will both have the opportunity to play and share the burden - and the fun, of course!
Sign Up will close either once all spots are taken or on 1st December 2018, whichever occurs first.

RoundblankSetup
The Nemesis for each round is listed in the geeklist items beginning with Item 4. Each Nemesis has to be defeated according to the solo rules, normal difficulty as outlined in the War Eternal rulebook. The geeklist item will also list the cards available in the market for the round.
Every participant will then have a time window until closure of the round to defeat the Nemesis.
These are the applicable rules for solo play (see War Eternal rulebook for reference):
- A Mage has 10 life for the first game, Gravehold starts with 30 life
- You don't lose if you're exhausted
- 3 player turn order cards, 2 Nemesis turn order cards
- Build the Nemesis deck with:
* 1x Tier 1 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 1 specific Nemesis
* 3x Tier 2 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 2 specific Nemesis
* 7x Tier 3 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 3 specific Nemesis
You may make as many attempts as you would like and may choose the outcome you like best. For example, if you won, but were exhausted in one game and ended with 5 life in a second attempt, you may report the better attempt for your official result. You may update your result until the round closes. You may build the Nemesis deck anew for every attempt.

WinningblankablankGame
You will receive a maximum of 4 rewards, based on your performance:
1 reward if you defeated the Nemesis at all
2 rewards if you managed to defeat the Nemesis in Tier 2
3 rewards if you managed to defeat the Nemesis in Tier 1
1 extra reward if you were not exhausted

You can forfeit all rewards you earned for the current round (i. e. you will not get any bonuses during your games). If you do and win, you will gain 2 extra rewards for the next round. You can choose to do this any time during a round, even if you already have a valid result reported with bonuses. If you Clenched Your Teeth, you will automatically earn the 2 extra rewards, if you manage to defeat the Nemesis with this handicap.
You can exchange rewards for benefits for your next game, I will announce in each round what rewards are available for that round.
Yours and Gravehold's life is not reset between games, instead you will heal 7 HP for your mage and 20 HP for Gravehold, up to the respective maximum. More can be bought through rewards.
Clarification: The rewards you earn are only available for the subsequent game. They are reset each round and you have to earn new rewards.

There is also one Special Reward every round that you can earn by achieving victory while fulfilling a secondary objective. The Special Reward is outlined in the respective Nemesis geeklist Item.

LosingblankablankGame
If you do not manage to defeat the Nemesis within the set timeframe, you will be faced with a choice for the next round:
a) Clench your teeth: You will start the next round with no rewards. You have to choose one of your games to submit as a final result and going from that you may heal your Mage and Gravehold as per the normal rules. (Example: You lost with Gravehold at 0 and your Mage with 1 Life remaining, then you will play with 20 Life for Gravehold and 8 Life for your Mage.)
b) Rest: You will not participate in the next round, but will start the round after that fully healed and with 1 reward to spend.

ResultblankSubmission
Simply reply to the geeklist item that belongs to the current Nemesis. Your submission MUST contain:
- The outcome of your game (see Rewards). If you did not manage to defeat the Nemesis, report here whether you would like to Rest or Clech your Teeth for the next round.
- Your remaining life (after healing, see above)
- Gravehold's remaining life (after healing, see above)
- The rewards you would like to claim
Your submission MAY contain:
- Information about your deck and strategy
You are encouraged to include:
- A heroic tale of bravery during your defence of the City.

Otherblankstuff
Everyone who defeats the Nemesis will receive 5 .

Boot Camp Mode Bracket

If you are new to the game or are looking for a more relaxed, while still challenging game, then this may be the mode you are looking for. But beware, it's still Aeon's End, so don't expect a walk in the Park!

Overview
Every participant will choose a Mage during sign-up and will play with that mage against one Nemesis each round. One round will last about 3 weeks, within that timeframe you must defeat the boss with your mage. You will then earn a reward that you may carry over into the next boss battle.

RoundblankSetup
The Nemesis for each round is listed in the geeklist items beginning with Item 4. Each Nemesis has to be defeated according to the solo rules, normal difficulty as outlined in the War Eternal rulebook, with the following exception: You may choose one of the boons listed under "Beginner" difficulty. When choosing a Mage, you will also choose which boon you want to play with.
The geeklist item will also list the cards available in the market for the round.
Every participant will then have a time window until closure of the round to defeat the Nemesis.
These are the applicable rules for solo play (see War Eternal rulebook for reference):
- A Mage has 10 Life for the first game OR you may choose to play with 12 Life. This also raises the maximum amount of Life you will heal between rounds.
- Gravehold starts with 30 life OR you may choose to play with 35 Life. This also raises the maximum amount of Life you will heal between rounds.
- If you chose neither of the above boons you may instead decrease the Nemesis' Life by 10 each round.
- You don't lose if you're exhausted
- 3 player turn order cards, 2 Nemesis turn order cards
- Build the Nemesis deck with:
* 1x Tier 1 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 1 specific Nemesis
* 3x Tier 2 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 2 specific Nemesis
* 7x Tier 3 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 3 specific Nemesis

Elimination Mode Bracket

Remember the times of old Jump'n'Run games like Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure or Earthworm Jim? I grew up playing these so I'd like to bring a bit of that spirit into this Mode. Don't worry, you won't have to jump and you won't have to run, you can still sit comfortably at your table. But you will have limited tries to complete each boss and you have limited tries to complete the Marathon. That means (as can be deduced from the titel already): This mode features elimination. If you're out, you're out, there's no coming back!

Overview
Every participant will choose a Mage during sign-up and will play with that mage against one Nemesis each round. One round will last about 3 weeks, within that timeframe you must defeat the boss with your mage. You will then earn a reward that you may carry over into the next boss battle. You will start the Marathon with 3 Continues and 5 Hearts. You can replenish Hearts between rounds, but you won't get more Continues that easily.
The Marathon ends when the last Nemesis or all participantes have been defeated.

- A Mage has 10 Life for the first game
- Gravehold starts with 30 life
- You don't lose if you're exhausted
- 3 player turn order cards, 2 Nemesis turn order cards
- Build the Nemesis deck with:
* 1x Tier 1 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 1 specific Nemesis
* 3x Tier 2 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 2 specific Nemesis
* 7x Tier 3 Basic Nemesis, 3x Tier 3 specific Nemesis
You start the Marathon with 5 heart. Every time you lose a game, you lose 1 heart. You may replay games you won, but are not happy with at no cost, but if you lose the replay, you will lose another heart. You may report the result you like best, as in all other game modes. You may update your result until the round closes. You may build the Nemesis deck anew for every attempt.
In between rounds you replenish 5 heart, additionally to those you still have left. As this is a brand new mode and I have no experience with that one, depending on how things pan out, this may be modified in each round. After all, this is supposed to be challenging, but still fun!
You do not have to sepnd all heart! If you feel you won't manage to do defeat the Nemesis in your remaining attempts, you can save them up to have more tries for the next round.

You can exchange rewards for benefits for your next game, I will announce in each round what rewards are available for that round.
Yours and Gravehold's life is not reset between games, instead you will heal 8 HP for your mage and 22 HP for Gravehold, up to the respective maximum.
You add 5 heart to your remaining heart, this is the number of tries you will have for the next round.

LosingblankablankGame
You start the game with 3 Continues. These do not replenish between rounds.
If you do not manage to defeat the Nemesis within the set timeframe, you will lose 1 Continue.
You will participate in the next round and you can choose to either heal Gravehold or your Mage back to full. The other one heals up the normal amount only. Example: You lost with both your Mage and Gravehold at 0. You will then start the next game either with 10HP for your Mage and 22 for Gravehold or with 8HP for your Mage and 30 for Gravehold. You will have no rewards to spend. You may exchange an additional Continue to buy a reward, but remember that these do not automatically replenish, so choose wisely!

ResultblankSubmission
Simply reply to the geeklist item that belongs to the current Nemesis. Your submission MUST contain:
- The outcome of your game (see Rewards).
- Your remaining life (after healing, see above)
- Gravehold's remaining life (after healing, see above)
- The rewards you would like to claim
- Your remaining heart and Continues
Your submission MAY contain:
- Information about your deck and strategy
You are encouraged to include:
- A heroic tale of bravery during your defence of the City.

At first the tremor was hardly noticable. A faint, low rumble, deep below the City. Making Gravehold's citizens stir in their slumber. Not enough to wake them. Yet. But the Mages felt it on another level, too. Something tugging at their minds, like a distant nightmare. As the tremors grew in intensity and became more frequent, the ever vigilant defenders of the City knew: It had begun again. They met at dawn's first light to meet the Umbra Titan.

Start of Round: 12/01/2018
End of Round: 12/22/2018

Market setup:
Gems: Dread Diamond, Scoria Slag, Bloodstone Jewel
Relics: Conclave Scroll, Cairn Compass
Spells: Carbonize, Jagged Lightning, Convection Field, Equilibrium

Available rewards:
1.) Gain 3 Aether at the start of your game. You may spend this Aether to buy cards from the market before the beginning of the game. This reward may be chosen multiple times to buy more or more expensive cards.
2.) Once per game during your turn, you may destroy a card from your hand or discard pile. This reward may be chosen once.
3.) Add 2 Tier 2 Basic Nemesis cards to the Nemesis deck. This reward may be chosen once.

Umbra Titan Special Reward:
Narrow Escape: If you win the game with only 1 Nemesis token left on Umbra Titan you may start the next game with 2 Charges for your Mage.

Good luck to you all and I hope you enjoy the Marathon!

The remnants of the forest some leagues to the north of Gravehold had come to life. Or so it had seemed at first to the watchmen in the towers. The trees and bristles had moved, not with the wind sweeping through dead wood, but with... purpose. Then the forest had moved closer, only... it was also still where it had always been. With dread the watchers saw that it was not the forest moving, but something that resembled a forest itself had moved through it. "Get the mages up here, now!" he called to the runner boys waiting in the rooms below. "The Maiden of Thorns is back."

Start of Round: 12/23/2018
End of Round: 01/19/2019

Market setup:
Gems: Haunted Berylite, Alien Element, Pain Stone
Relics: Fiend Catcher, Primordial Fetish
Spells: Celestial Spire, Nova Forge, Catalyst, Nether Conduit

Available rewards:
1.) Gain 3 Aether at the start of your game. You may spend this Aether to focus and / or open a breach before the start of the game. Clarification: This happens before your first turn. Thus you cannot prep a spell into a breach focused this way on your first turn (as you have to focus it in the current turn in order to do that). This reward may be chosen multiple times.
2.) Once per game, when you reshuffle the Turn Order deck you may remove one Nemesis Turn Order card. You have to shuffle it in again the next time you have to reshuffle. (I recommend to immediately put it into the discard pile to remember. It does not count as being in the discard pile, though!) This reward may be chosen twice, but you have to use it on different rounds, i. e. there must always be 1 Nemesis Turn Order card left in the deck.
3.) Heal Gravehold for 10HP. This may bring Gravehold to more than 30HP at the start of the game. However, during the game you may only heal back up to the max. of 30HP. This reward may be chosen once.

Maiden of Thorns Special Reward:
Conduit to Where? If you win the game and during the course of the game you emptied the Thorn Supply pile by using Nether Conduit, you may keep one Nether Conduit for the next Nemesis. It will start the game in your discard pile.

Good luck!

A warhorn sounded. But it did not come from Gravehold, but from outside. The mages on the City Walls squinted to see something in the gloom. For a moment there was neither sound nor light, then the sky tore and through an opened Breach dropped ten, twenty, a hundred, uncountable numbers of Undead. They fell to the ground, then stood, then steadily marched towards Gravehold's walls. First among them, large and hulking, chains clanging against his armour, strode their Commander: The Knight of Shackles.

Start of Round: 01/20/2019
End of Round: 02/17/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Fossilized Scarab, Breach Ore, Scoria Slag
Relics: Riddlesphere, Astral Cube
Spells: Conflagration, Fulminate, Scorch, Crystallize

Available Rewards:
1.) Gain 3 Aether at the start of your game. You may spend this to acquire cards, focus breaches or buy charges before the start of your game. Acquired cards start the game in your discard pile. You cannot prep a spell to a breach you focused in this way. This reward may be chosen multiple times.
2.) Add 4 Life to your Mage's current life. This may increase your Life to more than 10/12 for the start of the round. (You still cannot heal to more than 10/12 during the game.) This reward may be chosen once.
3.) Once per game, you may spend your charges to activate any War Eternal Mage's ability instead of your own. You can choose the ability you would like to use at any time, you do not have to choose before you start the game. Make sure, you remember when each of them may be triggered! This reward may be chosen twice.

Knight of Shackles Special Reward:
That Power Is Mine Alone! If you defeat the Knight of Shackles with only a single one of his Breaches open, you may focus one of your Breaches before the start of your games next round.

Have fun and good luck! meeple

The Chanting lured them away. Away to dark dungeons, beyond the safety of the walls, never to return. Gravehold was under attack once again, but this time, its foe was harder to make out. Not big and hulking, stalking the horizon, but silent and cunning, bleeding Gravehold out. Taking away its heart and soul: The people that lived within her walls. The Mages had to set out, leave the relative safety of the walls themselves to delve deep, to venture outside and hunt him down, before his agents took root in the City. They went to hunt the Hollow Crown.

Start of Round: 02/18/2019
End of Round: 03/17/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Frozen Magmite, Alien Element, Erratic Ingot
Relics: Mage's Totem, Eternity Charm
Spells: Inner Fire, Pyrotechnic Surge, Resonate, Char

Available Rewards:
1.) Gain 3 Aether at the start of your game. You may use this Aether during any of your turns as if you gained it through cards(e. g. you can use this to buy a more expensive card or to be able to afford opening a breach etc.). You do not need to spend it all in one go. I suggest you use markers to track this, but a piece of paper or your brain is also fine as long as you manage to track it somehow . This reward may be chosen multiple times.
2.) Heal 10 points of damage for the next round. You may freely distribute this between your Mage and Gravehold, but cannot bring either one to more than the max. health (10 / 12 for Mage, 30 / 35 for Gravehold). This reward may be chosen once.
3.) Gain 2 Nemesis tokens. You may spend one Nemesis token to cancel the persistent effect of a minion, an attack card or a power card. The Nemesis token is put onto the Nemesis. This may trigger the Nemesis effect, so be careful! Needless to say, if you run out of tokens you can no longer use this ability. This reward may be chosen twice.

Hollow Crown Special Reward:
Counter Cult: If you defeat all 9 Acolytes in a single game, you may keep one of them for the next game as your own cultist. Any time you or Gravehold would suffer damage, you may assign this damage to your cultist instead (until it's dead, of course). Each time you shuffle the turn order deck, you have to resolve its Blood Magic effect, though (unless it's already dead). (You didn't think, they'd be that loyal, did you?)
Clarification (Thanks Ruduen and Razoupaf for pointing it out): You have to defeat all of them yourself. You cannot simply wait until they kill themselves (you may of course let them damage themselves and only do the killing blow) or are killed by some Nemesis card effect ("Reign" comes to mind).

Have fun and good luck! meeple

When they heard the slow, dragging sound of enormous feet, the mages of Gravehold knew who - or rather, what - was coming. The Prophet, as the hulking body had been aptly named by some terrified guardsman on the wall had been killed before. Three times, at least. It always came back. But there was no hesitation in the defenders' steps as they ascended the walls. Only determination in their stance, as they set out to kill it again: The Thrice-Dead Prophet.

Start of Round: 03/18/2019
End of Round: 04/14/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Haunted Berylite, Volcanic Glass, Pain Stone
Relics: Fiend Catcher, Dimensional Key
Spells: Kindle, Feedback Aura, Conjure the Lost, Reduce to Ash

Available Rewards:
1.) Gain 3 Aether at the start of your game. You may use this Aether to purchase cards before the beginning of the game at the printed cost +1. You start with these cards in your hand (in addition to your normal starting hand). This reward may be chosen multiple times. *
2.) Once per game, you may lose 3 charges to heal up to 3 damage from your mage or 6 damage from Gravehold. This reward may be chosen twice.
3.) Once per game, when taking damage to your mage, you may suffer 1 additional damage to deal double the amount of damage to the Nemesis or a minion (e. g. if you suffer 3 damage, you can choose to suffer 4 instead and then deal 6 damage to the Nemesis). This also works, if you are getting exhausted through the attack or are already exhausted (rules for excess damage to GH apply). This reward may be chosen once.

*Yes, I will make sure there are 2-cost cards in the market setup !

Thrice-Dead Prophet Special Reward:
...and stay dead!: Win the game and deal more than 100 damage to the Prophet. (Hint: I'll use the base game Nemesis counter to count my damage.) Overkill counts, so if the last attack does more damage than necessary, that counts into the damage necessary for claiming this reward. If you manage to claim this reward, for the next round you get one Nemesis token that you will put on the Terror track as an additional Terror token (without effect). When you claim the first Terror token you will claim this one. It counts as a Terror token in every respect, but it does not have an effect and effectively buys one more round to get to the lose condition.

Have fun and good luck! meeple

Sleep. Exhaustion claims even the most vigilant and paranoid Breach Mage at some point. They try not to, but sometimes they dream. Of better days. Of a sky an endless blue and the sun shining on their faces. Of Gravehold a vibrant and lively city of trade and happy citizens. Isn't it better to just succumb to the dream? Isn't it so much better than reality? Oh, it would be so sweet, wouldn't it? But what is that web that covers the clear, blue sky? It almost looks like...
The Mages jerk awake almost simultaneously, as if struck by an invisible fist. Now is not the time to dream. The Wraithmonger is here to consume them all!

Start of Round: 04/15/2019
End of Round: 05/19/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Frozen Magmite, Breach Ore, Erratic Ingot
Relics: Mage's Totem, Vortex Gauntlet
Spells: Inner Fire, Thermal Dart, Catalyst, Char

Available Rewards:
1) Start your next game with 2 Charges. This reward may be chosen multiple times, but you cannot gain more Charges than your ability costs. Excess due to an uneven number of charges needed for your ability is lost.
2) Either add 4 HP to your Mage's Life or 10 HP to Gravehold's Life. This may bring either your or Gravehold to more than the normal maximum, but you cannot heal up to more than the normal maximum during the game. This reward may be chosen twice, but you cannot choose the same target twice. (So this means you can gain 4 Life for your Mage and 10 Life for Gravehold, but not 20 for Gravehold or 8 for your Mage.)
3) Once per game, if you would get exhausted, you can instead decide to skip your next turn (i. e. the next time a player turn order card is drawn you just draw the next card) to not be exhausted and instead heal 3 HP. Do not execute any of the "when exhausted" effects, instead continue the game as normal. Excess damage from the attack that would have exhausted you is dealt to your new HP value. So it is possible to immediately die again from the same attack. Tough luck . This reward may be chosen once.

Wraithmonger Special Reward:
I have dreamt about you...: If you still win the game after claiming Terror Token No. 2, you may for the next game choose the Mage ability of any Aeon's End Base Game Mage in addition to your own ability. You may collect charges for both abilities, freely distributing them as you wish. You may use any of the two abilities as soon as it is fully charged. Yes, even both on the same turn. Go Crazy! (If you do not own the base game, first of all: Shame on you ! Secondly, I'm sure, people here in the forum will help you out with the ability texts and costs!)

Have fun and good luck! meeple

As darkness fell on Gravehold like a blanket, its inhabitants cast furtive glances up into the "sky", hurrying across the streets, eager to get into the relative safety of their houses. They all felt it, the shadows were deeper than before. The lights in the windows drew back into themselves, shrinking from some unseen force. The Mages' clothing stirred in an unnatural breeze. Their enemy had crept upon them almost unawares, assaulting them suddenly from the shades between the walls. The Magus of Cloaks was a stealthy foe indeed, but to save Gravehold for another day, they would have to drive it back from whence it came.

Start of Round: 05/21/2019
End of Round: 06/15/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Dread Diamond, Scoria Slag, Alien Element
Relics: Conclave Scroll, Astral Cube
Spells: Thoughtform Familiar, Convection Field, Aurora, Pyromancy

Available Rewards:
This is the last round before the final Nemesis. You may choose from any reward that has been available up to now, except for the special rewards. Choose wisely and make the best of it!

Magus of Cloaks Special Reward:
Ray of Light: If you defeat the Magus of Cloaks while Shadow's Reach is in play, you may collect all of the remaining power tokens on that card. In the final game you can spend these tokens to prevent the Unleash effect of the Nemesis. The first time you wish to prevent an Unleash it costs 1 token, the second time 3, then 5. If you then have remaining tokens, you cheated somewhere .

Have fun and good luck! meeple

The Magus slunk away from whence it came. But upon its wake, there was no rest for the weary defenders of Gravehold. Barely able to stand, their adrenaline high, but deprived of sleep and rest for so long, the Breach Mages saw another Breach open, just as the last one closed.
The abomination pushing through, was a blur in one moment, then hanging in the sky seemingly frozen in mid-movement. Then it opened its jaws to let out a scream. Or maybe it was just hungry and about to devour the last of humanity. The Mages straightened their backs and marched once again to meet the Gate Witch. To fight their final battle.

Start of Round: 06/16/2019
End of Round: 07/13/2019

Market Setup:
Gems: Haunted Berylite, Breach Ore, Pain Stone
Relics: Fiend Catcher, Vortex Gauntlet
Spells: Conflagration, Fulminate, Conjure the Lost, Equilibrium

Available Rewards:
Eternal Glory!

Gate Witch Special Reward:
It was so much fun running this with you! This is - for me - really the most special reward of them all, to be able to experience this game with this amazing community! Thank you all for participating and I'll hope to see you again next time! (Oh, yes, there will be a next time!)

Have fun and good luck! meeple
