My copy just arrived and it's sitting on my table. I'm hoping to break it out and prep it this weekend, and experience it throughout my evenings this month. I'll post updates. Super excited for this one.

Continuing in my exploration of this deep game, my opponent and I are moving onto the medium length scenarios in order to try to get a full game completed every session. So far the Government player (myself) have been winning the full scenarios but it's been a very close contest every time.

I picked this game up about 6 months ago but haven't found the time to experience it yet. I was originally hoping to block off some time over the summer holidays but that didn't happen. My plan is to finally sequester myself in my basement for a few days over the Christmas holidays and get this game played. I keep hearing great things about it and if it lives up to my expectations it may just replace all my other strategic level WWII Europe Front games.

I've finally gotten this game to the table. After many false starts and reading of the rules, I've started a solo game to figure out the little nuances. So far I've found the method of terrain combat effects to be new and very intriguing. So far the attacking side rolls very well while the defending side rolls poorly. This has caused a few units to be knocked out and with the limited resource points available, it is not the easiest to get them back into the fight [sorry to the French XIX Corps]. At the end of the rules there is a curious little warm up suggestion; to play the first 3 turns then determine victory. This is a way to become more familiar with movement, combat, supply and the map. At first I thought this was a little unnecessary, however, it is a good idea as the terrain combat effects are done that much differently.

Still marching hither and thither with Old Fritz as I move deeper into 1758. So far, Prussia is doing well having smacked Austria hard at the outset (capturing Prague, Olmutz, and Brun). The Russian steamroller is beginning to rumble but France is being held in check by Hanover/GB thus far.

I'm still plugging away at this game, despite restarting a few times to switch card use or escape the fact I screwed up some rules. I'm not enjoying the rule book; it's too bitty with rule snippets dotted all over the place.

Dan and I now prepare for our last campaign of 2018 - a seasonally-appropriate play of the SCS take on the Battle of the Bulge - Ardennes! Yes, we wanted to start a Bulge game for December, and as we are both SCS fans, we've chosen this title from my library (I own at least five games on the subject, with at least one more on pre-order!).

Dan has asked to be the Allies and I was happy to oblige. I know how the story ends, but with any luck, I can make him sweat a bit before giving up the ghost. We kick things off this Thursday, playing the entire campaign, so this will certainly end up being another in a long line of multi-session projects, which is fine by me!

Won with Terrans in Scenario 5 - The Loss of Beta Centauri. Put my planet all the way in the corner and my opponent started near the opposite corner, which I think was a big mistake because it gave me too much time to pick his fleet apart. Managed to not lose any ships, although one of my Destroyers lost its only weapon on the first hit of the game so just flew around away from the combat to avoid being destroyed. I missed with 2+ and 3+ shots from my torpedoes, which would have lost me the game if my opponent hadn't given me the extra turns by starting so far away. Managed to destroy everything but one transport, at which point my opponent conceded.

This game is very smooth for how procedural it is.

Another face to face which went all the way to turn nine when the Great war broke out, despite my authoritarians winning the war they still lost the game by one VP.

A close tough battle.

Cheers,

This one is getting some table time this month! In the middle of another full scenario and likely to play another one. Trying very hard to not mod the game and just enjoy it out of the box. Victory conditions are really tight so this is a competitive title! I really appreciate the detailed order of battle. Nice one!

Read the rules and just set this up before dinner. I wanted to get something on the table that wasn't hex and counter and this seemed like a good purchase since I absolutely didn't know anything about Rhodesia except that it was in Africa. The rulebook however, fixed this. Now I feel that I have a basic understanding of the conflict (designer notes are really good) and I am ready to play.

Revisiting this system with the Tip of the Spear scenario which is a one mapper dealing with the 2nd, Lehr and 116 Panzer divisions making their last push during the Battle of the Bulge.

The BCS system has several different takes on how to do things compared to a lot of game systems out there.

Will post updates as I work through this 4 turn (Dec 24 - Dec 27) scenario.

Recently played the Polish Front scenario.

Poles did quite well. They delayed the Axis advance
and kept the Soviets from entering until late in the
scenario. Poles held Axis forces to lowest victory
level possible - and that victory was by narrowest of
margins. Nice job there, James.

Next up is the French Front scenario.

Looks like the Allies will be shouting either

"Vive la France!"

or

"Merde!"shake

Board Game: Serbia the Defiant / Romania: Transylvanian Gambit
I bought a bunch of games in the Series: Der Weltkrieg a few years ago but have not played them much.

This game is one of the multiple games included in The Eastern Front: 1914-1917. It is quite small so I used it to try to finally get the hang of the DWK series rules.

I like them: the game is deceptively simple and the turns move very quickly.

I can't work out how the Austro-Hungarians can possibly capture Belgrade in the 1914 scenario which I played. But this was fun. Both sides' armies melted away quickly in the crucible of 1914 combat - which probably hurt the A-H side more in the end.

I took a couple of pictures of the position when I abandoned the game at the end of September 1914 - with the A-H army shattered on the plains west of Belgrade (and the Serbian army almost as shattered, but dug in between the invading forces and the capital).

Don't have a lot of space or time available so we both independantly came up with this old Zucker game.

I have the original 1979 OSG version, with the sticker price of AUD4.90....

Board Game: Fading Glory
Our second play of the Borodino scenario was postponed from the week before. I’m pretty sure he did it because he had realised that Thursday evening is my gin and tonic time! We decided to play the same sides as we did last time so my task was to keep the swarming horde of French soldiers away from Moscow once again. Last time the Russian morale had plummeted for an early decisive victory for the French so this time I was much more careful how to spend it. We decided to add a couple more variants: Leaders and energy levels of troops which definitely added a nice extra layer to it. This time I was very lucky with two die rolls initially which meant the French couldn’t overrun my forward defensive positions before I could get a few more of my locked troops in play. That meant I could withdraw into a strong position behind a narrow open area between two forests that the French would have to move through. When the fighting started it was more as two set lines against each other which turned into a carnage. I was able to break a couple of strong French troops but more just kept coming. In the end, it was a matter of who could keep their troops in line better than the other and thereby maintaining their morale level higher longer. The final showdown on day 3 ended with both of us down to 1 point left and a large unresolved battle in front of us. I decided to concentrate my troops on two French units hoping I would be able to rout or break them before I had to look at the battles where these tactics had stretched me very thin. First roll was inconclusive but I rolled a 6 in the second one to break the Imperial Guard for a narrow Russian victory. Moscow was saved.

I still have this one on the table! Now that I've gone through the preliminary learning scenarios, I'm in the middle of setting my first full-blown one. A lot more pieces of the board!

This game is a blast to play, simple rules, and quick playing. On my sixth play and have not won a game yet. I got Liberty or Death recently but can't stop playing Pavlov's House.

Boy! I dread see those German artillery and Stuka cards come up.

Still playing Don't Tread On Me: The American Revolution Solitaire Board Game from November, and I wanted to talk about how the war's going. It's so cool how you can plan your turn out, figure out what you want to do, and then after you've tried to do that, the game just doesn't listen. Sometimes it does exactly what you were hoping it wouldn't do. Here's an example.

I just finished turn 10, and was entering turn 11, with the rebellion well in hand (I thought). I'm pretty sure I'm doing some things wrong, but still, I thought I had control of the board.

New England, New York, and Carolina are all heavily in the British camp. Pennsylvania and Virginia are getting there, but I'm holding those states by the skin of my teeth. In fact, Virginia I'm holding with three units. Then, in turn 11, Thomas Jefferson shows up, the French and Spanish threaten to invade England or Gibraltar, and it all goes to hell.

First off, with the threatened invasion of England, the British blue banded units are withdrawn from the game, to help defend Britain. That's my two best units (both cavalry) and a really good infantry unit, just gone. The cavalry is a huge loss, but ok, I'll fill the gap with Hessians and Loyalists. Not too bad. I'm stretched pretty thin, but holding. But I think I've lost the initiative.

This is where Thomas Jefferson comes in. He isn't a really big deal, but here's what happened; when Jefferson comes into the game, he goes into the American leadership box in Virginia. In combat, he gives a one column shift to rebel troops, whether they're attacking or defending. Again, not so bad, except with only three British units in Virginia, and two smugglers off the coast, I'll have to leave the two rebel units that get deployed in Virginia until next turn. Virginia is holding.

Then what happens? In the Rebel Campaign phase, I roll a double 4... which means a Major Campaign in VIRGINIA! OMG, what the heck!? Any other state and I could probably take it on the chin and still hold the state. Maybe. But Virginia's fragile, and I'm barely holding on there already.

Because of the Major Campaign, two rebel units get recruited and placed in Virginia. And they get placed with the two rebel units that were recruited in Virginia earlier by the smugglers. So now there are four rebel units in Virginia. Then they begin their campaign by attacking the closest British units, and along with the one column shift for Thomas Jefferson, in two battles the rebels smash the Brits, and manage to kick the British completely out of Virginia.

The Virginian morale, which was decent before this, drops by -2 due to the battle losses. And then at the end of the turn, because Virginia is occupied only by rebels, it loses another morale, and Thomas Jefferson himself causes another morale loss. So in one turn, Virginia lost -4 to it's morale, and will be really hard to get back. I just don't have the troops to hold the other states and go after Virginia. So I'll probably have to abandon the state. What a crazy turn.

I'm not sure what else the game has in store, but so far, it's told a heck of a story. I can't wait for The White Tribe: Rhodesia's War 1966-1980 now, to see if it's as good as this game.

For a game with such a small footprint, it's fantastic.

Three different games ongoing on Vassal. I'm clearly ahead in one, about to lose in another, and the third is up in the air.

Absolutely loving this implementation of the system.
