I used to love these games... but they haven't aged well. I /want/ to love them again, but they seem so bloated and laden with baggage.

With the Eurogame revolution, I want to see these designs revisited. They all have excellent ideas, and if stripped down to their essentials, could be reborn as new classics, playable in two hours instead of two days.

Feel free to add your own suggestions for games that could stand to lose some weight... I might get inspired!

The Holy Grail of Euro-ization. The political machinations and deep historical flavor are marred by ridiculous amounts of chrome and the fiddliest bits of all time. Plus, it's ugly! I've been working on a version of this game that keeps the duplicity and tension, but is playable in two hours per era - a tall order, as I'm discovering.

I can understand why this game is considered a Classic, but I've always been disappointed when I play it. The heart of the game is the politics of the budget, and the highwire act that el Presidente must perform to stay on top. But that heart is lost beneath a mass of goofy and clumsy card play and chit fiddling. My attempt to Euro-ize this game led to Mystery Rummy: Junta. The jury is still out.

A clever genealogical framework and some bang-up graphics are nerfed by odd mechanics and the then-requisite high level of early-80s chrome. A computer game version of this would be great.

/This/ close to being the greatest game in history, and certainly the most innovative thing to ever come out of Avalon Hill. The only thing holding it back is some counter-intuitive rules (I /still/ throw up my hands at malfunctions) and lots of itty-bitty rulelets and exceptionlings. I've carved out a good chassis for a simpler version, which powers my "Water Fight" design, and will someday grace homebrew versions set in the Warhammer 40,000 and Heavy Gear universes.

Lots of sound and fury signifying, in the end, very little except a chance to read off a wacky alternate-universe version of the Nicene creed. Wouldn't be too hard to make over into something more consistently satisfying, but I dispensed with my copy long ago, and am not particularly willing to pay much to replace it. Would still probably have low replayability even if "fixed."

Oohhh, I thought this game was hot doodoo when I was 15. It still makes me tingle a little when I look at it now, but the rules are /sooooo/ 70s, and there are about a hundred million special little units, each with their own rules. Pass...

Next in line to the throne behind Up Front, this game is so near to greatness. Veteran players know about its numerous pitfalls and bumpy roads that need to be smoothed over before playing. Well, I dream of a day when we all get to play the same unambiguous game... with pretty bits to boot (and some corrections to ludicrous map errors).

A strategic-level examination of a Star Wars-style galactic rebellion. Clever interface between character-level and world-destroying-military-level action. But, that classic AH/SPI legal system of rules writing... Man, I would pay real money for a straight-forward streamlined version with actual bits...

Didn't live up to its promise of being a fun, futuristic sports blowout. I love the idea of Heartless Huey, but whenever I think about re-writing this game to make it fun and sporty, I play Blood Bowl again and it passes.

This game does not particularly suffer from the rules-grunge of its time... instead, it suffers from its epic scale and just sheer amount of stuff to take care of. There's a lot counters to move, a lot of dice to roll in combat, a lot of province tax values to add up... I don't think this one could be made any shorter and still be satisfying in any way.

A multiplayer game of the Far West in which players using cards take turns controlling random tribes as well as the US forces on a pretty area map. Sounds like a great Euro-game . . . unfortunately killed by the double-wammy of Richard Berg chrome and AH rules overkill (26 pages including a glossary). The number of Die Roll Modifiers and rules exceptions to every little piece makes the game feel as sluggish as a python that has recently swallowed a pregnant yak with a glandular problem. I would love to see a stripped down version of this game.

I really want to play this game before I die. I break out the rules every summer and read them by the pool till it almost clicks. Then I put the rules back in the box and forget about it till next summer.

Sdiberar is absolutely correct: The AH and SPI approach to explaining rules was strictly business. Folio sized, the rulebooks had two solid columns of small text on each page with few illustrations. One page of AH rules is equal to around four or five pages of German rules. Therefore, MR's eighty page rulebook would be roughly equivalent to a three hundred and fifty page German rulebook!
