Welcome to
Solitaire Games on Your Table
January 2019

The Home of “Together, We Game Alone”

Before anything else,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

and welcome to another year of awesome solo gaming.

Guidelines

1 PLAY a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.
2 Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it. Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags:

1 Add the <summary></summary> tag to include a short overview.
2 Add the <rating></rating> tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0. Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded.
3 Be nice, but most of all have fun!
4 See something you like? Give it a thumb.

It's extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some thumbsup and thumbsdown describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They're great visual aids to summarize your post, and might help to keep the wallet damage down a bit!

Need a little help with formatting? Check out the Forum Formatting Guide and Tricks of the Geek.

About Me

Hi! some of you may have recognized me post in SGOYT and the 1PG forums, now here I am. I started joining this hobby on the last quarter of 2017 and sooner after that I found this awesome guild. Since then I've been lurking, occasionally posting and researching of what games I need to add to my collection.

So this month is the start of a new year and a new beginning.

Board Gaming Resolutions

Our theme for this month is of course, Resolutions, resolutions, resolutions...this may sound cliche but we all are man of habits, sad to say we may have developed some not-so-nice habits this year, and deep down we need to change some of that. Personally, my most obvious habit that I need to correct is my overuse of smartphone, I don't play games with it, I just browse for hours on end. So it's keeping me from playing board games and reading books. In line with this month's theme, I'd like you to share a bad habit that you will change in the coming year and shiny will be given to those who shared.

All GG donated to this post will be given away this month.

always injured...
Avatar
Jason, the Mechanic was woken up by the computer. Shivering, disoriented and, of all things, dead tired, he climbed out of his Hibernation chamber. And just a second later, he was fully awake.
Kneeling over one of his crewmembers. Dead.

This was one of the unfortunate things that just did happen once in a while but that you weren't told about in the academy. Sure, it was 99.9% safe but that really didn't help when you were the 0.1%. Becoming part of the statistics. Poor sod. But nothing to be done here at the moment.

Jason stood up and looked around. He was the only one awake. Unsure about why that was and what happened, he decided to check the ships various statuses. Stati? Status? He shook his head. 'Just make sure everything's working', he muttered to himself.

First he made his way towards the engines. That was his domain after all, his responsibility. Among the hundreds of other things noone else cared about. 'I'm not getting paid enough for this shit', he muttered as he made his way through the corridors into the next room.

The ship was making weird noises, as usual. But something seemed different this time, somehow. He couldn't really put a finger on anything specific but something seemed off. And not only because he was woken up next to a corpse.

He made it through the Evacuation Section, having a quick look at the readings. Everything seemed to be in order, so he didn't bother to with them and moved on towards the Storage Room. Which was on fire!
Maybe that's why the ships computer decided to wake him. It wasn't a big fire yet and Jason easily managed to put it out. He also grabbed his Plasma Torch while he was in there and continued to the Engines Room.

He made his way into the next room and stopped dead in this tracks.
There was this strange weblike strands everywhere, some weird goo on the walls and a couple of big, strangelooking eggs on the floor. Some sort of Nest? Jason stood in the doorway, not sure what happened here.

This was something new and unprecedented. And unnerving. He wasn't scared. Not at all. But suddenly he became even more accutely aware of the strange sounds and noises around him.

Carefully, he edged towards the other exit, that lead to the Engine Room 1, making sure to keep those egg like things in his vision.

Checking the Engines #1, he realised it wasn't working. Again.
'Piece of shit', he growled while he started working on them. Bend over the engines, he suddenly stopped and looked towards the doors.
Has anyone else been awakened? It sounded vaguely like footsteps. Not sure what kept him from calling out to any of his crewmembers to see who it was but then they stopped completely. Jason waited but then decided that it might also have been something else entirely. A big ship like this, there were always strange noises everywhere. And if there was something on board that had put those eggs in the next room, he sure as hell didn't want to be discovered by it.

So, after fixing one of the engines, he decided to check on the others, too. Arriving in the Engine Room 2, he saw that for once, everything was working as intended.

Not bothering to check the last of the engines, two of them were more than enough to keep the ship working safely, he made it to the Cabins, catching his breath.
Then his breath caught in his throat as he looked at one corner of the room. It looked like a bunch of cables and pipes, nestled together in one heap. Then they slowly, so slowly, started to move. That heap got bigger and bigger as limbs started to unfurl. A horrible thing out of nightmares stared at him and opened its mouth. With a hissing, snarling sound, the thing attacked. Its long and very, very pointy tail lashed out at him. Missing him by inches and scratching the metal walls of the ship.

Jason panicked. He set the room on fire and escaped through the Technical Corridors to the other end of the ship, as far away from this creature as possible.

While he scrambled away, the thing attacked again, leaving some deep clawmarks in his body. Jason screamed and managed to scramble away into safety. Well, relative safety. At least for the moment.

Dressing his wounds in the Emergency Room, he was attacked by yet another of these things. Or maybe the same. He didn't really care, all he could think about was getting away from those claws. And the tail. And those teeths...

While he ran through the corridors, the fire he had started earlier had started to spread. And spread some more. Who knew a metal ship would be that flammable?

Eventually the ship exploded, destroying everyone and everything on board.

I hardly dared to hope that Wingspan would come to Tabletopia, but now it's arrived, and I'll be playing it over and over again during January.

Quote:
Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games.

You are bird enthusiasts—researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors—seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your aviary. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:

--Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
--Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
--Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them

The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

thumbsup I like the way the Automa has a deck of only a few cards, but each card has multiple possibile actions depicted on it, and you choose the action according to which round it is. After each round, you re-shuffle the deck.

thumbsup Each card is unique, with a different bird depicted, and each card also has different powers. This, along with the different mechanics used, means you won't get bored quickly, if ever.

thumbsup I also like the fact that you can learn something about birds while playing.

Such a nice start of the new year playing my 2018 Secret Solo Santa gift for Roll Player January 2019 Challenges: Assassins Bleed.

Went minion heavy collecting lots of XP which allowed me to get all attribute goals and removing some injuries. Alas hardly any blue dice passing by so missed one backstory.

Final score:
Yellow: 75
Green: 66
Purple: 64

I was Purple. I almost made a bad mistake of not pulling away cubes between rounds, but got it sorted. There were some conflicts. The board offers more player interaction with three than two, so I try to play this game as a three player most of the time..

With promo cards the chances of getting good cards in the final round has actually gotten better. At first I could simply be picking ticket after ticket on the final round, ending the game way too fast. Now I can drag out the game a bit more to optimize it a bit. Which is good. There is a better balance to it with more cards.

I found myself interested in some of the cards, so I stopped to read a bit on a few of them. Someday I will sit down and read through them all. Maybe I will actually learn something... whistle

I haven't posted in SGOYT for a while, so I thought the New Year was a good time to start again.

It took me a while to get around to trying out Renegade as I was a little apprehensive about it having a steep learning curve (I had a memory of Rahdo commenting on the amout of jargon in the game). So I wanted to make sure I had enough time to dedicate myself to learning it, and with all sorts of other things going on, as well as other Kickstarter games arriving, it got pushed to one side for some time.

Eventually, I did break it out and discovered that it wasn't as difficult to learn as I feared it was going to be. I think the walkthrough does a pretty good job of explaining the basics, and maybe that's something which more games should include. Having carried on with the tutorial game from where the rulebook left off and after watching some playthrough videos, I felt I was ready to tackle a proper game, and went up against Alpha-Moby (as I wasn't going to be insane and jump right in with a hard opponent for my first proper game).

And I have to say that I really like this game. The very different take on deckbuilding works incredibly well, and the cards lend themselves to some very cool combos - there were a couple of times when I thought that there was no way I was going to be able to complete the current goal as I didn't have the right symbols for the actions that I would need to take, only to realise that I had the right symbols for a different set of actions that would also work.

I managed to succeed with all three objectives, which did lead me to scoring over 100 points, and that's maybe the one very small area where the game doesn't hit the right spot with me as I prefer to have a defined win/loss condition rather a score range. But I don't see any reason why I can't just use success or failure on the gold card to determine whether I win or lose, so I think I'm going to play that way from now on.

So even though it took me all that time to get around to playing this for the first time, it's not going to take that long for subsequent plays, and I can see this becoming one of my regular games.

I borrowed my brother's copy of Seiji Kanai's "Eight Epics" to try out the solitaire mode. Cooperatively we never scored a win, but after reading the rules (they were explained to me the first time) I discovered we did a few things wrong, making it much harder on ourselves.

First victory: easy mode without the events; 1 life left.

I quite enjoy the artwork on these cards; I do not care for, nor enjoy, the mechanics of this game however. The player rolls a set of dice which he is able to slightly modify using the special powers of the 8 avatars (the beautiful cards you see in the pictures.) to overcome a set of challenges. These challenges can be for instance: 'Roll 45+ with 7 dice' or 'Roll the same numbers with 6 dice'.

There are some elements of the game I do like:
thumbsup multiple variants included, even a scenario
thumbsup beautiful art and theme; it looks great on the table
thumbsup quick setup time
thumbsup a bit puzzle-ly, trying to maximize the odds for the desired result

Playing 'The Lost Witch' Scenario

I also tried the included scenario, 'The Lost Witch' a few times; until I overcame the challenge. I could not return a game without beating it, could I?

I do not think I will ever actually play this particular game again, though. I just don't enjoy the game-play; I found it even boring at some times to be honest. That said, I have and will enjoy some of Seiji's other games again; I have a tremendous amount of respect for that designer.

First time playing with my new sleeves, and it made a huge difference in shuffling...
So much better! This was a relatively long game, starting off very well and really never slowing down. I only had to downgrade one time, and got 4 treasure rewards. That was what made it lengthy, shuffling after getting the treasure rewards (there was only 1 in the deck so the other 3 involved upgrading a card in the deck). Tatianna was never in any real danger, and scoffed at her would-be rescuers as she calmly sauntered out of the castle.

As much as I continue to like this game, I have to admit it can be very swingy. I had three games in a row where all my heroes starved. I am sure part of that was due to poor play on my part, but part was also just bad luck in tile placement and scavenge card draws.

But the fourth time was a charm, as the Ronin and the Hunter managed to locate the power plant, defuse the bomb and then get back to the van in three turns.

A key part in the victory was the Hunter finding a motorcycle. As you can see below, the power plant ended up being on the opposite side of the board from the van. We were also helped by the use of the tunnel, which allowed faster travel unimpeded by enemies.

I can see getting this to the table a lot. The variety of missions, enemies and heroes can offer something fresh each play.

But for now, it's time to make good on one of my 2019 resolutions: play more of the games in my top 10. So I need to get these little fellas to the table.

I won!!

I played with Frey, which gave me 4 actions instead of 3. And it helped a whole heap! I managed to keep the monsters low, even if I drew poorly from the bags. While playing this game I got a feeling of nostalgia. It was, I believe, the first co-op game I got to try out, and it was nice to get a win on it!

Still some rules that are a bit fuzzy for me. I need to sit down and really study the rulebook someday. So I might have done a few mistakes that worked in my favour. But I don`t feel really bad about it, because of the bad draws I suffered. I even got to finish two runes, and got the benefits of them. Yay!

Having played a game of Carc Island on the last day of the year, it only seemed appropriate to also play a game on the first day of the year as well

This is still my most played solo variant, and Hunters & Gatherers my most played Carcassonne title. It sets up easily, plays well, and is a challenge (though luck has a part to play as well of course, which is the nature of this style of game).

A poor decision in this session though turned what could have been my first completed island for the year into an incomplete one cry Retrospect is a great thing ^^ Scored better than last game, and it will be back on the table soon enough.

I you have a copy of Carcassonne lying around, this variant is definitely worth a try. Highly recommended.

THE STORY SO FAR:

THE PARTY: The Damsels OF Distress; Amiri the Barbarian, Seelah the Paladin, Seoni the Sorceress, Merisiel the Rogue and Kyra the Cleric.

The Damsels first cleaned up the town of Sandpoint by putting down Nualia, the former aristocrat turned demon worshipper and ended her pact with the Goblins wreaking havoc on the port town. (Adventure Deck 1 - Burnt Offerings).

But no sooner than the Goblin infestation been resolved, a string of murders in Sandpoint had to be investigated. (Adventure Deck 2 "The Skinsaw Murders") They had to stop a horde of zombies descending on the town, the ghouls eating them and finally destroy a deranged cultist serial killer called the Skinsaw Man and his string-pulling demon puppet master far away in Magnimar.

That leaves the Damsels in the city-state of Magnimar where the Lord Mayor has asked them to investigate nearby Fort Rannick. They beat off families of ogres and their Giant overlords to end "The Hook Mountain Massacre"? (Adventure Deck 3)

That seems to only stir up the "Fortress of the Storm Giants" (Adventure Deck 4). The first thing these enraged Giants do is to try to strike back in revenge against the Damsels by sending a horde of Jorgenfist Stone Giants to attack the town of Sandpoint, where these brave warriors stop the rampaging giants and save "Sandpoint Under Siege" (Scenario 1). Then they tracked the Jorgenfist Stone Giants back to the castle of "Jorgenfist" (Scenario 2) and took care of that issue. In the center courtyard of the castle, rose an ominous structure, "The Black Tower" (Scenario 3). Residing within it, guarding the Emerald Codex with knowledge of a strange long lost magical empire, is The Black Monk and his coterie of evil Harpy Monks. The Damsels must fight their way through and recover the Codex for the next piece of the mystery.

Man, those Harpy Monks were annoying. Each time you ran into one, their shrill cries would deceive the Damsels into all running to that location and standing there awestruck, unable to use spell or weapon. Only those who were wise enough to shake off their hideous wailing were free to act. They did a good job of protecting their master, but once they had isolated him at the Mountain Peak, the women could cut off his avenues of escape while sending Amiri the Barbarian, Queen of the Mountains, Slayer of Frost Giants, Dispatcher of Villains, to once again separate a villain's head from their shoulders and recover the Codex. It didn't have any pictures in it, so she gave it to the Cleric, Kyra.

This was probably my favorite solo board game of 2018 so I figured I would start off 2019 with a run through the server. Randomly selected a renegade and it was Hettie, my favorite!

Things were really looking good as I was able to get pas the first two counter-measures successfully. Unfortunately, the second silver counter measure was "Viral Overload" which in my opinion, is the hardest to complete in a solo play because it doesn't scale.

Anyway, after failing, I was unable to add the necessary sparks to Virtue and Salvation and game end.

I finally got Spirit Island after a long time wondering if it would be for me. This is my fourth play so I'm still a beginner, but it's already showing a lot of promise. It's thinky in a very pleasant way – plus the theme is outstanding.

I won directly after Terror Level III was revealed since there was no cities on the board - I would have lost next round though, so it was too close for comfort.

This is my first play with the themed side of the board, the event cards, a scenario and an adversary. I will definitively continue with this, I liked it a lot!

I usually don't do resolutions, but I think one very obvious goal for 2019 would be to buy less and play more! The kids are getting older so I think at least there will be more time for gaming

<summary>Spirit Island is a very pleasant solo gaming experience, with lots of replayability!</summary>

I received this game from a friend for Christmas. I had put in on my wishlist after having played it once in a three player game earlier in the year. My wife and I played a two player game of our copy last night and I was inspired to give it a solo play this morning. I played it true solo and wanted to play "Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares" since I think the fear mechanic is interesting. I played with no scenario or blight card. This game seems pretty tough for playing true solo, but I did manage to barely get a win. I had to rely on getting a good terror effect in order to avoid putting the final blight out on my penultimate turn. Things were getting pretty rough, but I was able to generate enough terror to win the game on the following turn. This spirit feels very much like it feels a support role, but I'm glad to have gotten a terror win.

I enjoyed this game a lot, but I currently wonder if I would just rather play this with two handed or even just play this multiplayer. I'll probably give some of the scenarios a shot soon.

Happy New Year to all. Great day to lounge around the house and play a game or two or three.

I haven't played Scythe since September, so I actually had to check the rule book a time or two.

I picked my favorite faction - Polania. I think it is easiest to play with its faction action of being able to choose 2 actions off the encounter cards, so it gives you much needed bonuses early in (and throughout) the game.

Playing at normal "Automa" level.

Game start:

After the first playthrough of the Automa deck:

I just took the factory away from the Rusviet Automa.

Game end, 5 stars to 6, I still have the factory, but not spread out quite enough, I lost 74-77.

My most played game in 2018 (and ever). I enjoyed the Rise of Fenris. I'll add in Mad Tesla next game(s).

One question I had on the Automa's "neighborhood":
If the Automa character is 1 hex away from the factory and it gets a "move character'action", the Factory is in its neighborhood (but not in any other automa unit's neighborhoods), so I assume even when I pick up the character, it's neighborhood still exists, and I move the character to the factory? When the move is done, the character is no longer adjacent to any other of its units.

I'm pretty sure that is how I have played it in the past, but like I said, it's been a while.

Thanks.

Decided to begin a crazy project of playing through all of the Band of Brothers scenarios in cronological order.

First scenario is scenario 19 from Ghost Panzer.

The first T34s
The Germans set up with 5 armored units adn 2 guns. The Russians will try to kill three German tanks.

The Russians entered 5 tanks each of the first 3 turns and the Germans aimed and fired at the approaching Russian tanks.

End of turn 1 after 2 Russian tanks went up in flames.

End of turn 2 after another 3 Russians tanks fell.

The Russian tanks only have half their MPs in this one and that hurts them alot as they need to move. (Have to get of board 15 and 11 as fast as possible. For the T34s and T26Ss this means they need to move both of their first turns which makes it impossible to get in a shot as the targets was over 10 hexes away.)

End of turn 3. 4 casualties for the Russians and a BT7 have gone mental and charged headlong into the German line.

Turn 4 and no more Russian reinforcements and starting with only 6 units against 7 Germans.
Germans use a CP to fire first at the forward BT7. Miss the shot and the BT7 proceeds to also miss his shot. He falls shortly after that and a further two Russians are elliminated. The remaining three Russian tanks tries their luck from 11 hexes away. None succeed and that gives us this image of the end of turn 4.

Turn 5 and the last 3 Russians are taken out. Two by the guns and one by a tank.

This looks to be a difficult scenario for the Russians, but some more luck and better use of the T34s could have done something. The German setup gave themselves a longer range suring the first turns, but in turn gave the Russians the same longer range and made it difficult/impossible for them to make their proficiency checks for their first turns.

One scenario down, sixty four to go!

Happy New Year!

I started of the new finishing Scenario #2 "Barrow Laier"

The Bloodletters Guild(can it be a guild with only two members)of Skeever the Vermling Mindthief and Rohurk the Savvas Cragheart headed deep into the Barrow Lair to finish off what they started...
Having found the Bandit Commander they immediately went after him but he wasn't alone. He kept summoning Living Bones and his army of Living Corpses and Rohurk in a fit of rage almost bit the dust a few times...but Skeever did what he does best and snuck around picking off what he could.
In the end the team found what they came for and are heading back to town to see what they can get into next.

Man I have nothing but positive things to say about this game. To me it ias what I always wanted in board game form come to life. The story, paths and sense of progression are top notch. My one and only complaint is the setup and table space it takes up. Other than that this is just a heck of a game

Welcome, 2019!

Started the day with solo plays of Shahrazad, thinking it would help boost my H-index... but no.

Scores were decent: 41, 39, 43, and 40 points.

Now on to playing some of those Shelf of Shame titles...

I just completed my first game of Bargain Basement Bathysphere the other week, and I am excited to play some more rounds this month! I love the stress that comes from using "oxygen" to re-roll the dice, and since it is just sheets of paper marked with a pencil, I can take a few dice and levels with me to work and visiting family.

I definitely recommend this solo Print-n-Play!

Mouse, Thomas Raith, and Harry Dresden in ...Grave Peril

mb After emptying the entire bag of fate tokens out and finding only 13 I couldn't help but think there should be more. The components for this game are excellent. I love the artwork and the thick counters. I am a huge fan of the book series and enjoy remembering Harry's misadventures as I play.

Bringing Mouse to the party definitely would have created a different experience than what Dresden originally had.

Outcome: mb Defeat!

Everything was going so well too. Overcoming both the Vampire masquerade and freeing the Hostages followed by taking out Lea's Hellhounds, the Red Court Vampires, and Kravos's Ghost had the trio thinking they might just make it out.
Unfortunately the experience was not great for any of the characters. Thomas succumbed, Mouse was captured, and Harry has become a plaything for Bianca.

The fate dice were cruel, especially in the showdown!

thumbsup Amazing components
thumbsup Fantastic artwork
thumbsup Harry Dresden Universe
mb Fate Dice (beautiful, simple, cruel)
mb Familiarity with the source material really adds to the play experience
thumbsdown Even 'Easy' is hard!

For the SGOYT Aggregator:
<summary> The Dresden Files Cooperative Card Game Playing as Harry Dresden and his crew you try to overcome obstacles, solve cases, and vanquish evil foes. It's not easy, and more puzzle than experience.</summary>

Got this for my birthday in early December.

A small box game with 18 cards in it. These cards are used to play 5 different games. Now only 1 of these is a solo game (Hoard). It's a very simple and quick 1P experience. Enjoyable for a little while but don't think I'll be playing it for too much longer.

Finishing up my 3rd straight play of this fun, tough game. This is the 3rd straight time I have drawn that dreaded OKH card which requires the Germans to capture all 19(! ) hexes along the Volga to win.

BTW, I have created a variant regarding the Soviet deck( Replenishing the Soviet Deck ) since it almost always runs out before the player can capture all those hexes.
