Grabbed this from Noble Knight the last time I was in Madison for work and got thru the introductory Operation Cobra scenario last weekend, which was great fun.

So, after reading the advanced rules again, I fired up a campaign game and have been enjoying it so far.

D-Day was nearly a complete disaster for the Allies, despite three successful airborne drops into Normandy on the eve of the invasion. After a lucky counterattack, the Allies are losing the precious ground gained after the invasion and must fight their way off the beaches against a formidable German defense.

It will take a while, but I am looking forward to the journey!

Got this Christmas present on the table and the early signs are exceedingly good. My normal practice is to read the rulebook thoroughly before I play, sometimes making brief notes. This may not take very long if the broad wargame mechanics are familiar, but playing solo its (at least) twice as easy to miss important rule differences on how ZOCs or road march or whatever work, which are then slightly annoying when you only notice them some way through a game.

Anyhow, a post here about Pavlov’s House said an experienced wargamer could open the box and be playing in 20 minutes. So inspired by that I just set it up and, as the rulebook exactly follows the turn sequence, off I went, not knowing exactly what I was meant to be doing but getting stuck in. I knew after just a few turns I was going to like this game a lot, as the tension and the narrative immediately started to build. Wave on wave of German bombers early on – the AA units I’d set up took some out, but those who got all through then thoroughly plastered the AA sites. It was almost as if the Germans were working to a plan. The first Jerry ground unit to appear was, appropriately, Scouts, quickly followed by two groups of riflemen. I decided to move up an LMG and two gunners for it as reinforcements - they duly took out some of the attacking infantry, but then one of them was targeted by a sniper. The machine-gunner was KIA, as I hadn’t yet moved up any First Aid tokens, and as I hadn’t got a spared trained gunner up the LMG was now temporarily useless. Need to fix that when I next draw cards… Oh dear, the next German card after the sniper is a Panzer III. We also need some AT up right quick, Comrades!

Things moved on, I took out that and several other tanks and got some sappers out mining, but more tanks and inf keep building up. Just as I get reinforcements up and start to think about clearing a path and maybe using one of my Aassult Group cards to counter-attack the Jerries have launched an all out Assault. And this is just the easy setting – no sneaky enemy tactic cards or operational cards that draw off your preciously assembled supplies. It’s a hard game but an addictive “just-one-more-turn” one. My only complaint, now I’m actually playing it, would be the lack of a counter for the eponymous hero’s famous dog…

A very Merry Gaming New Year to One and All!

Working my way through the scenarios here in the base game, with two expansions in hand that I’m very much looking forward to (plus more expansions on the horizon).

So far the French are doing rather well, though the sessions have been nail-biters. The system lends itself especially well to solitaire mode, nicely balancing playability and chrome.

First proper scenario underway, and my Germans have been encircling Soviet units in a town in the center of the board. No casualties yet, but my AT guns are both in the line of fire of an entrenched Soviet gun, so I'm worried my 88 might not be around by the time the T-34s start showing up.

Not a proper wargame, but my son and I have had this out and have been going back and forth over winter break. Just won an early victory as the Imperials, having chased out the rebel base once and then ambushed it a second time thanks to a quick interrogation of a captured Luke Skywalker. Game never fails to deliver a fun narrative.

Early going with this one, but I like what I see so far. The game system neatly limits what you can do on any given turn, and chit-pull adds a nice degree of uncertainty.

The way supply is handled feels right, as do the effects of terrain on the campaign.

Decided to begin a crazy project of playing through all of the Band of Brothers scenarios in cronological order.

First scenario is scenario 19 from Ghost Panzer.

The first T34s
The Germans set up with 5 armored units adn 2 guns. The Russians will try to kill three German tanks.

The Russians entered 5 tanks each of the first 3 turns and the Germans aimed and fired at the approaching Russian tanks.

End of turn 1 after 2 Russian tanks went up in flames.

End of turn 2 after another 3 Russians tanks fell.

The Russian tanks only have half their MPs in this one and that hurts them alot as they need to move. (Have to get of board 15 and 11 as fast as possible. For the T34s and T26Ss this means they need to move both of their first turns which makes it impossible to get in a shot as the targets was over 10 hexes away.)

End of turn 3. 4 casualties for the Russians and a BT7 have gone mental and charged headlong into the German line.

Turn 4 and no more Russian reinforcements and starting with only 6 units against 7 Germans.
Germans use a CP to fire first at the forward BT7. Miss the shot and the BT7 proceeds to also miss his shot. He falls shortly after that and a further two Russians are elliminated. The remaining three Russian tanks tries their luck from 11 hexes away. None succeed and that gives us this image of the end of turn 4.

Turn 5 and the last 3 Russians are taken out. Two by the guns and one by a tank.

This looks to be a difficult scenario for the Russians, but some more luck and better use of the T34s could have done something. The German setup gave themselves a longer range suring the first turns, but in turn gave the Russians the same longer range and made it difficult/impossible for them to make their proficiency checks for their first turns.

One scenario down, sixty four to go!

Received as a Christmas gift from my lovely bride. I'm still working through the example of play booklet.

Addendum: Despite having played the (somewhat similar) Twilight Struggle, I battled with these rules for days. I made what was (for me) the mistake of starting with the walkthrough and reading the relevant rules sections when so instructed. I wasn't getting anywhere so, instead of cleaning it up and moving on, I read the rules straight through and then did the walkthrough. It's so much more clear now! I still have no idea what I'm doing strategically, but I have a much better grasp of the procedural stuff and I'm starting to see the interplay of the various operations. I still have a long way to go, but I'm getting there. My plan is to play several solo turns of the two player game (just to reinforce the procedures) before tackling the actual one-player rules.

Finishing up my 3rd straight play of this fun, tough game. This is the 3rd straight time I have drawn that dreaded OKH card which requires the Germans to capture all 19(! ) hexes along the Volga to win.

BTW, I have created a variant regarding the Soviet deck( Replenishing the Soviet Deck ) since it almost always runs out before the player can capture all those hexes.
