A Couple of Gamers Welcomes You To

What Couples Have Been Playing (WCHBP)
February 2019

Happy birthday! This is WCHBP's 3rd anniversary list!

Welcome to the "What Couples Have Been Playing" Geeklist, a monthly geeklist community for people gaming in pairs.

Use this list to post about games you've played this month as 2-player games, comment on other people's items, and throw your thumbs around! Mingle in the comments below.

Here's your step-by-step guide:

1 Play a game as a couple* within the month of February.
2 Post a geeklist entry after playing.
3 Let us know what you liked or didn't like about the game, and tell us how it plays with two (particularly for games that aren't 2p only!). If you've played it with more than two at another time, feel free to make comparisons with the 2p gameplay.
4 Provide feedback for others, chat, ask questions, and give a little thumb here and there!

BONUS ROLL
d10-5 Welcome and hello to all newbies! If you're new to our Geeklist, please let us know! We're very friendly around here, and we'd love to welcome you properly!

*For our purposes, "couple" is defined as two people playing a game. Many of us here are playing with partners or spouses, but if you play a game with your sister or your best friend, please DO feel free to post about it here too!

February Getting to Know You

How about for February, you tell us about your 2p gaming partner(s). Who's your accomplice in 2p gaming? Is it your sweetheart? Child? Best friend? Did one of you introduce the other to board gaming? Where and when do you like to game?

As usual, post what you're playing as a couple this month to the list! As always, please be respectful. And above all, enjoy your gaming.

A very special thank you to our list's originator, Ryan Olden.

We have been playing a lot of Buffy Legendary lately and are thoroughly enjoying this iteration, the clever way they have integrated hero characters turning to villainy, the light and dark track offering bonuses only when the token in those areas and the courage tokens allowing added spends or strikes are fun changes to the standard formula that make the game feel more thematic to the source material while forgoing the Encounters formula seen in other versions.

It does sometimes feel that the team you pick against a Big Bad is more vital than good play but thst always seems to be the case with base legendary anyway.

I recommend to fans of both Legdndary and Buffy.

My first contribution here!
I had just been reading the Jan list and asked my wife if she was up for a game of Splendor: Cities. I know it's one of her favourites so I was sure she'd say yes.
We played 3 games with me winning the second and 3rd. The last game was unusual in that she had accumulated 18 points but hadn't met the conditions of any City tiles (she only needed ONE brown card). At one point she was ahead 11-2 on points but I was able to pinch a victory with 13 points right before she paid off her only brown (and would've built the 16 point city and crushed me).
If you have had any enjoyment with Splendor 2p I'd highly recommend forking out for the Cities expansions. Aside from strongholds they are all fantastic and all change a great game subtlety.
At 2p it is much more strategic than at higher player counts in my mind, and the Cities expansions add variety to the viable strategies that can be pursued from game to game.

My son and his girlfriend introduced this to us a few months back... now my wife and I generally knock out a session after dinner, couple times a week.

We now have a half dozen expansions too. Short rules, extremely replayable, numerous strategies, and very reasonable play time, scales very well between 2-4 players with one set, 2-6 players with two sets combined.

Played Magic back in the day... a lot of fun. This game scratches the same itch, more affordably, since each set is playable alone OR you can mix and match.

My wife and I are in love with this new twist on Race for the Galaxy. It is less random and more deliberate, just the way we like it.
While the game is different with just 2, it is still a fun game (though I am now ready to see some expansions!)

My husband and I just finished our first game of Feb19. This is the first time in a long time that we have gone all the way to end-game scoring. I had 'Voice of America' for my last card which swung the game in my favor. Final tally - US win with 4 points.

Ok we got a couple of quick games of this in at lunch today. It’s alot like hive and can get pretty deep some times for just a little abstract wheras there is no luck only strategy. I won both games but the more I thought about it the throughout the afternoon it dawned on me...she let me win!

Anyway no games tonight, it’s “Art Night” Mrs P likes to paint. This is tonight’s masterpiece. She didn’t like how it turned out but I did. What do you think?

My wife and I were apart for three weeks after I relocated back to PA from NC. We have spent the last week unpacking and getting settled so today was the first opportunity we’ve had for gaming together.

I had already played this game twice solo before teaching it to my wife today. I must have done a decent job teaching her because she beat me 37-29.

I really like the engine building in this one. The theme is that you are a thief who has broken into the royal treasure room and discovered an hourglass that lets you manipulate time. As such you have cards in your present (your engine) and your future (how your engine will evolve). You can have four each of locations, characters, and events in your present. Once a fifth card would be added, the card furthest to the left gets pushed into your past where it earns you points at the end of the game. Your past and future can have an unlimited number of cards in them. You move cards from the future by taking the resources off them; once they have no more resources, they immediately move into the present.

The game lasts five rounds with the number of resources you can claim increasing from five to seven throughout the game. I find this game to be a clever design that’s simple to teach and play.

Recommended for couples (out of three stars)?

After A Thief’s Fortune, we played another game that I had played a few times solo before teaching it to my wife today. In this game, you’re removing treasures from the King’s crypt because he decided to be buried with them rather than passing them on to his heirs. It’s a bit of a creepy theme, but it’s fun to play.

This is basically a set collection game with a nifty dice placement mechanic. You don’t roll the dice when you place them onto a card. You choose the number (their level of effort) and then after claiming a treasure, you roll them to see if they’re exhausted by the effort. If you roll a number lower than the value that was used on the die, they are exhausted. They can be reclaimed later, but you use a precious action to reclaim all of your exhausted dice.

At the end of the game, you score points for the value on the cards (ranging from one to four) and there are five collector’s who also provide some bonuses. I ended up winning this one 45-33.

Recommended for couples (out of three stars)?

My gaming partner is my wife Lisa. We will celebrate our twentieth wedding anniversary in April. We have been through a lot over the twenty-three years we have been together and she has always stood by me no matter how tough things have gotten in our lives. I honestly don’t know what I’d do without her.

Two player game of Hippo with Jan. Easy to play but probably works better with more than two players. I had a chance (playing green) to win but didn’t roll the right symbols. Jan then managed to place her last two tokens and win the game.

For our first couples play of February (we held a game night for our gaming group last night, so not the first overall plays for February), we played this kickstarted game that arrived yesterday. On Tour is a roll & write (with a card component) about planning a tour for a band. The goal is to having the longest contiguous route where each number is equal to or greater than the last. I won 29 to April’s 20.

Pros:
+ Beautiful dry erase board (which are your tour planners).
+ Easy to teach
+ Quick to get to the table
+ Player count is limited only by how many player boards you have (I got the add-on to increase it to 8 boards)
+ Not terribly deep gameplay, but still some interesting choices.

Cons:
- Seems like a filler, but plays a bit longer than a typical filler. Gameplay seems just a bit too long for what it is. A couple/few turns less seems like it would have been better.

This is a game we desperately want to acquire. Till we do that, we have to settle for the board game arena version. This morning's game was rather brutal. Athens accumulated all the wheat in round 2 and forced a Spartan defeat through starvation.

A very Joss Whedon start to the month. After picking it up second hand at last years games expo we finally played Firefly.

The game felt very thematic and we enjoyed it but we can't help but feel we aren't getting the full experience with 2 players. Thinking about it I'm not really sure anything would change in the base game by adding more players as player interactiin seems minimal anyway. Has anyone here played it that can chime in?

This one is the longest standing shelf of shame resident. It has been there for a little over two years now. I will blame it on the theme which is probably not super exciting for my wife (hence it was a Christmas present for me originally) as well as how imposing a presence it is on the table. There are lots of piles of cards and it is a rather heavy worker placement game.

My wife managed to win this game 8-4. I decided it would be a good idea to try the "no marks" strategy where you do not bother finding out what each voter is evaluating you on. I am fairly certain it was not a good idea. We had some minor concerns originally because there is player interaction where you can knock other players' workers out of spots. It did not trouble us though as the player knocked off the spot gets a pretty nice consolation prize when getting bumped. I really enjoyed this one and it felt rather engine builder-ish. You acquire spells, and artifacts throughout the game which provide you with further actions you can use each round. The real mind game portion of this one is in the timing of getting your workers out because the round end mechanism is such that the other player can end the round before you place all your workers. This one is pretty complex to try and explain here. I will say I would recommend it for couples who do not mind long and heavy worker placement games. I thought it scaled fine to two players and would be a real drag at the higher player counts (the expansion boosts it to 6! That's crazy!). Definitely check it out if any of this appeals to you. I am looking forward to trying it again with different room layouts.

A cute game with my almost 4-year-old. The scoring is pretty cool and unique. I bet it would be better with more than 2 players, though.

It was a bit too dexterous for him. After we finished, he immediately requested to play Rhino Hero. His mother was the lucky one that got to play that with him.

Only our 2nd play. My partner was very meh, but I enjoyed it. It seems like the sort of game that's going to only get better the more you play it. I was not utilizing that rondel very effectively, and we forgot the rule that we could make deliveries with a single donkey cart to multiple communities until about halfway through the game. I'm looking forward to playing it more. I will say that the box is stupidly deep for no discernible reason.

Bought this used almost a year ago, and it had sat unplayed until today. After our too-long game of Underwater Cities last month, I wanted to know if perhaps Vladimír Suchý was not a designer for us, as we own both Last Will and Shipyard which has also been languishing unplayed. Thankfully we both enjoyed Last Will. It plays very quickly. You have no more than 7 rounds to spend your money. 2p seemed fine; you will utilize neutral blocking tokens in the planning phase to block available choices. I really can't see that adding more people would help this game, or even hurt it that much, but maybe the full 5p players would be too much downtime. I don't know, turns were so quick, maybe it wouldn't matter. Anyway, my partner enjoyed it very much so I suspect this will get requested.

It was a learning game for us, but luckily we’ve played Roll Player (and loved it) and so the dice drafting aspect was easy to grasp. And we play Azul fairly regularly so are somewhat used to the spacial aspect of where we can place things. We enjoyed it. Luckily for me I was really focusing on the face up objective cards and it paid off.

Edit: typos

My wife and I played a game of Ascension on the app before going to bed tonight. It has been a LONG time since she'd played this game and she spent most of the game remembering how to play. As a result, I almost doubled her score. But it was fun, nonetheless.

As for whom I plsy my "couples" with... I have three possible people:

1) My wife -- we play a lot of games on my tablet... but also get some games to the actual table.

2) Nicole -- The one person our gaming circle who likes games almost as much as me... and our tastes in games line up very well!

3) Q -- We have played a lot of games together. He primarily prefers co-op games... because he is VERY competitive. We do play some dueling types of games... but he is VERY picky about which games he likes.

Two plays in a row of this wonderful, sneaky little game: he won the first but I got him back in the second.

My #1 gaming partner is my husband of 34 years (we've been together 39). Nothing to add other than we're still in love and each other's best friend. How great is that?!

(My photo is of us in Santorini where we vacationed last summer, and where we of course played both Santorini and Akrotiri.heart)

It's early days for us as we just lost our first February game ...attempting again later this afternoon. At the moment we're playing as 3 characters: Instructor, Administrator, and Laborer. Not sure if this is the best combo for us but we'll see. It sure feels different from Season 1 (which we *loved*) and that's a good thing, love the variety.

Not strictly 2P as a friend came over yesterday and taught us Hanabi. (I've owned it for years on my shelf of shame.) It was fun, though we later played it just the two of us and it was definitely just okay. Probably we should try it again but I may just save it for plays with 3+.

I also own Beyond Baker Street (unplayed) which is just a more convoluted version. I have to give that a try but I'm not sure the extra rules would make it any better.

Board Game: Suburbia
We played Suburbia today and added in some of the components from the expansion Suburbia Inc. This is one of our favorite games. I pulled out the victory.

We're looking forward to the Suburbia: Collector's Edition which is on Kickstarter right now. The Collector's Edition will come with larger tiles, updated artwork, all of the expansions, bonus tiles and metal coins just to name a few.

We always enjoy Gizmos. We both had assembled good engines. At game end, we each had 43 points and 16 gizmos built, but she had more energy marbles in her energy ring than I had in mine. She wins on the tie-breaker!
