Alan R. Moon's classic 2004 Spiel des jahres winning game Ticket to Ride began as an endearing family game but has since become a blockbuster franchise with multiple standalone games, expansions, and map collections. This GeekList seeks to organize a list of all the games in the Ticket to Ride series (including some international titles and rarities that would be the Holy Grail on any Ticket to Ride collector's shelf).

It all began here in 2004 with Alan R. Moon's original Ticket to Ride which features a map of the United States and parts of Canada on which 2-5 players compete to claim routes for points, complete secret tickets that connect distant cities, and vie for the longest continuous path (a bonus that awards an extra 10 points to one player). The game is simpler than its successors but the game presented here is the core DNA of all future Ticket to Ride games and should be the first stop for any new traveler.

This has also been re-released as a 15th anniversary edition which features new box art, exclusive translucent trains, and a booklet about the series' history. It doesn't have its own dedicated item page here on BGG (it is listed only as a version) so I included this note here rather than in a new entry.

The first (and oft forgotten) expansion for Ticket to Ride is long out of print. It added four more tickets featuring shorter paths and lower points than most tickets from the base game (these tickets have since been reprinted in the USA 1910 expansion; see below) as well as five character cards that grant special asymmetric abilities to the players.

In 2006, Days of Wonder released what many consider one of the most essential expansion purchases in all of gaming. Once you include USA 1910 in your game of Ticket to Ride, you will never play without it again. Its main feature is the addition of 35 additional tickets (including reprints of the 4 tickets from the out of print Mystery Train expansion; see above) which allow for three new game modes: 1910, Big Cities, and (my personal favorite) the Mega Game. In addition to the extra tickets, USA 1910 also adds a new end game bonus card (15 points to the player with the most completed tickets) and poker sized reprints of all the tickets and train cards from the original base game (which are only included in mini sizes in the base game) which makes playing the game more comfortable than ever.

The special 10th anniversary edition of Ticket to Ride includes a larger board with new art, but the same familiar cities and routes as original Ticket to Ride. It also includes all of the tickets from the USA 1910 expansion bundled into the box (but erroneously, it omits the special rules from the 1910 expansion). Its most famous feature is the inclusion of tins which contain the trains for each player, which are now little detailed and painted miniatures. My favorites are the red circus trains with the little giraffes sticking their heads out of the roof. All of the changes in this edition, however, are purely aesthetic and the gameplay is identical to the original game and its USA 1910 expansion.

In 2005, Alan R. Moon followed up his initial success with the first new stand-alone game in the Ticket to Ride series, Ticket to Ride: Europe. While this game trades out the USA for a map of the European continent, that is not the only change. Ticket distributions are a little more balanced with the advent of long tickets which guarantee every player has the opportunity to start the game with a high point ticket to work toward. Claiming routes is more complicated with the introduction of tunnels (which introduce a light press your luck element) and ferries (which require using one or more locomotive cards to claim). Players also now have a fourth possible action, building a train station (of which every player has three) in order to use an opponent's route to help complete a ticket. Players who forego the use of their stations score additional points at the end of the game. Unlike the original Ticket to Ride, Europe includes poker sized cards in the base game so you can play comfortably without having to buy an expansion first.

Following in the footsteps of USA 1910, Europa 1912 is an expansion for Ticket to Ride: Europe which adds 55 brand new tickets (along with reprints of the base game's tickets) and rules for three new modes: Europe Expanded, Big Cities of Europe, and Mega Europe. Unlike USA 1910, Europa 1912 also includes an element that can be used as a small expansion for any Ticket to Ride game: Warehouses and Depots where a strategic move into a depot can allow a player to claim train cards from another player's warehouse.

This small pack of cards was given away free from Days of Wonder's website but has since become a lot harder (and more expensive) to track down. It adds seven new tickets (including one new long ticket) to Ticket to Ride: Europe, tracing the path of the Orient Express. The ticket backs are unfortunately only compatible with the base game tickets and not with the slightly different tickets from the Europa 1912 expansion.

Days of Wonder created this official promo card for Ticket to Ride: Europe which presents a brand new ticket with the route from London to København worth 8 points. It was given out by retailers and also available in the December 2017 issue of Tabletop Gaming Magazine. Note that it's card back art makes it incompatible with the Europa 1912 expansion without some kind of opaque sleeving (similarly to the Orient Express mini-expansion).

Ticket to Ride: Märklin is the third stand-alone game in the Ticket to Ride series, named after the German toy company known for model trains, and featuring a map of Germany. The game has a specialized deck of train cards which all feature unique art showcasing Märklin products and 4+ locomotives which can only be used to claim routes four spaces or longer but can be freely drawn from the face-up display. The game also features a light pick-up-and-deliver mechanic with passengers that can travel along your network to pick up valuable point tokens. The map and passenger theme are reimplemented in Zug um Zug: Deutschland (Ticket to Ride: Germany) but not without extensive changes which may make both games worth having for a fan of Ticket to Ride.

Zug um Zug: Deutschland is a 2012 reimplementation of Ticket to Ride: Märklin, which had by that point been long out of print. The game was created exclusively for the German market (at least initially) and is far simpler as a base game than Märklin, though it does feature some idiosyncracies like separate short and long ticket decks, and tickets that connect to neighboring countries.

Similar to USA 1910 and Europa 1912, Deutschland 1902 is an expansion specifically for Zug um Zug: Deutschland which adds additional tickets to the game but also a brand new passenger mechanic but heavily revised from the passengers seen in Märklin. Gone are the point tokens and the pick-up-and-deliver element. Instead, the wooden passengers are distributed according to a pre-determined setup before the game begins and then can be claimed by players claiming routes into and out of cities. The scoring is done at the end and is more of a set collection mechanic.

Giving in to the demands of players who pined for the game exclusive to the German market, Days of Wonder caved and created Ticket to Ride: Germany for the English language market. Germany is mostly an English language repackaging of Zug um Zug: Deutschland but is slightly different in that it bundles the passengers from Deutschland 1902 right into the base game. It also includes most of the tickets from both Zug um Zug: Deutschland and Deutschland 1902 combined but is missing a couple so for the fullest experience, import the German version and its expansion.

Before the limited exclusivity of Zug um Zug: Deutschland to German markets in 2012, Days of Wonder had done something similar back in 2007 with Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries, a game originally sold only in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway. Again, after waves of demand, Days of Wonder eventually released the game to other markets and it's a good thing they did as it is one of the best-reviewed variations of Ticket to Ride. While most Ticket to Ride games are designed for 2-5 players, Nordic Countries is a tighter map specifically built for 2 or 3 players. Some of its other features are a vertically oriented map, fewer trains per player (40 instead of the usual 45), ferries and tunnels like Europe, and a lucrative 9 space long route.

A pre-cursor to the Map Collection series, Ticket to Ride: Switzerland was the first map expansion which required the trains and cards from another stand-alone game. The board and tickets provided a tighter 2-3 player map with extensive use of tunnels (but no ferries), tickets that connect to neighboring countries, and locomotives which can only be used on tunnels and never as generic wild cards. The map was so popular with players, it would later be bundled with a map of India in Map Collection Volume 2 (see below).

In 2011, Days of Wonder began its fantastic run of the Ticket to Ride Map Collection, featuring slimmer boxes that include only new maps (often double-sided) and tickets (as well as any additional components needed to play) but lacking the plastic trains and train cards found in the various base games, requiring players to borrow those components from a game like Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe.

Volume 1 includes a double-sided map. One side features the Team Asia map designed by series originator Alan R. Moon. Team Asia is a 4 or 6 player game which allows players to compete in 2 or 3 partnerships, sharing some cards in included card holders. Players individually have only 27 trains and tunnels are even more unpredictable, requiring players sometimes to draw as many as 6 additional cards.

The other side is Legendary Asia, designed by François Valentyne. This game plays more like a standard game of Ticket to Ride (or Europe) but includes treacherous mountain routes which forces you to discard extra plastic trains from your supply (but you do get 2 points for each train discarded this way) and a brand new bonus which rewards not the longest continuous path but the most cities connected within a single network.

Map Collection Volume 2 features a brand new map of India, designed for 2-4 players. The map includes ferries but not tunnels and a brand new and intriguing bonus called the Mandala which awards additional points to players who are able to complete their tickets with more than one distinct path.

This collection also features a reprint of the much loved Switzerland map (see above).

For the third Map Collection, Days of Wonder dropped the double-sided map and provided only a single map: Heart of Africa. Heart of Africa has a reputation as one of the tightest and most competitive maps with double routes only running along the coast and only single routes moving inland. The addition of terrain cards gives players an opportunity to multiply the scores they receive for claiming routes but can also forecast a player's intentions to their opponents.

Map Collection Volume 4: Nederland features a map of the Netherlands for 2-5 players and introduces the concept of tolls and coins to pay them. The tolls do not work especially well with 2 players though there is a dummy player variant for 2. The rules also include an official rules variant at any player count that removes the tolls and coins entirely and treats it more as a classic map.

Map Collection Volume 5 returns to offering double-sided boards. One side is the United Kingdom which introduces a tech tree mechanic to the Ticket to Ride series with players initially restricted to only claiming one and two space long routes in a single area, having to upgrade their technology to claim longer and farther routes as well as unlocking other abilities and powers. The game also includes some additional advanced technologies that are not as well tested or balanced but included nonetheless for fun.

On the other side, a map of Pennsylvania pays homage to the state's rich railroad history and offers a stock share element that has players not only claiming routes and completing tickets but also vying for supremacy in the most lucrative railroad companies.

Map Collection Volume 6 comes in a thicker box than the other Map Collections and also features the largest board in a Ticket to Ride game yet (it takes up some serious table space).

One side features a map of France where most of the routes are blank. The mechanical idiosyncrasy here is that players select and place punchboard routes over blank slots every time they draw train cards, thus determining the position of routes they later claim (if someone else doesn't claim them first).

The other side is the Old West, featuring a map of a few of the westernmost US states and supporting up to 6 players (the only Ticket to Ride map other than Team Asia to allow more than 5 to play). Players can build saloons to syphon points off of their opponents and an included variant allows you to chase aliens out of Roswell, NM (using either the included token or the Alvin miniature from Alvin & Dexter; see below).

Map Collection Volume 7 features the largest maps yet in the Ticket to Ride series, an oversized, double-sided board featuring Japan on one side and Italy on the other. The box art features Japan as the main map (unless you buy the box from Italy where a local edition features the Italy map instead).

The Japan map features the famous bullet train by including several neutral-colored bullet train minis and certain routes on which only the bullet train minis are placed instead of your normal player-colored trains. On your turn, you may claim a bullet train route in the same way you would claim a gray route, except you place a single bullet train mini on it instead of your own train and once claimed, ALL players can use that route to complete tickets (so you may be helping others as well as yourself). There is a separate score track where players track how many cards they've spent towards the development of the communal bullet line. At the end of the game, players who contributed the most to the bullet line are rewarded with points while those who contributed the least are penalized (and anyone who contributed nothing is penalized even more harshly).

If that isn't enough, the Japan map also features an inlay on the board with a smaller network (reminiscent of the New York or London board) representing the Tokyo subway network. Some tickets require players to connect a distant city to Tokyo and then further connect the main Tokyo station to a different subway station.

Although there is no official variant involving Dexter the Dinosaur (like how the Old West map has a variant using Alvin the Alien), I feel like the Japan map would thematically be a great map with which to use the Alvin & Dexter expansion.

On the other side, Italy features a new action involving a new card type. During setup, all Ferry Cards are placed in a face-up stack and a player can choose for their turn to take a single Ferry Card. A player may only hold 2 Ferry Cards at a time. Every grey route in the game is a ferry route and has wave icons instead of the usual locomotive symbols. One Ferry Card can be used to count for up to two spaces with wave icons when claiming a ferry route, but the Ferry Cards cannot be used for anything else. Locomotives can still be used to pay for wave spaces but they can only be used for a single space (instead of the two a Ferry Card counts for).

Italy also has 17 distinct regions, marked with names, colors and coats of arms in each of their cities. At the end of the game, players earn bonus points based on the number of regions connected together in each network. There are even some regions which can count as two for purposes of the bonus if all of their cities are connected.

This map pack is a release exclusive to Poland though it may be released outside Poland in the future similarly to Nordic Countries but only time will tell. Besides featuring a map of Poland, the expansion is also themed around increased cooperation between the countries that border Poland. While it is not the first Ticket to Ride board to feature adjacent countries, this expansion differs in this way: when a player establishes a connection between two other countries, that player draws the top bonus cards from the special decks associated with both of the connected countries. Those cards have point values that decrease as the cards are drawn, rewarding players who are able to connect these countries the quickest.

A rather odd entry: to help players cope with isolation in the wake of the worldwide novel coronavirus pandemic, Alan R. Moon designed a print-and-play expansion for Ticket to Ride, released for free by Days of Wonder. The expansion is themed around staying at home (as most people must during the pandemic) with a map of a house. Of particular note are new rainbow family routes on which players claim only one space per turn (or two in a 2-player game) rather than the entire route and more than one player can ultimately claim spaces of the same route. Once completed, a family route can be used by any player with at least one train on the route to help complete tickets.

In 2016, Alan R. Moon and Days of Wonder came out with a brand new spin on the Ticket to Ride series targeting gamers who prefer slightly heavier weight games. Ticket to Ride: Rails and Sails features a double-sided board with players competing over either a map of the entire world or the Great Lakes of North America. Its biggest innovation is that players place not only trains but also ships to claim routes and complete their tickets, drawing from both train and ship decks of cards. Players can also build harbors that serve as ticket score multipliers. The game takes about twice as long as a standard game of Ticket to Ride and carries a higher price tag.

Ticket to Ride: First Journey initially appeared in the US as a Target exclusive game. Geared toward younger players, First Journey works well as a game to play with children or as a faster variation of Ticket to Ride. Like the base game, it features a map of the United States, but there are far fewer routes and cities. The routes are also much shorter on average. What is perhaps most interesting is that there is no score track, but rather players race to be the first to complete six tickets which can be tickets secretly held or a Coast to Coast ticket (which any player can claim by connecting one the three westernmost cities to any of the three easternmost cities).
