Long ago, on a website far far away, there was a competition in which entrants were challenged to create an abstract strategy game on an 8x8 board.

I was one of the judges at the time, and I seem to recall a lot more entries; many of them, sadly, rethemed versions of chess! These are the ones I could find.

Competition Rules

Quote:

Game designers and hopefuls, put on your thinking caps!

About Board Games, together with the Strategy Gaming Society and Abstract Games magazine, is sponsoring the First Annual 8x8 Game Design Competition. The goal is simple: design a great two-player game that can be played on an 8x8 playing surface using pieces most people are likely to have around the house.

Prizes will be awarded to the top two games, as chosen by a panel of judges spread around the world. First prize is a trophy, a one-year membership in the Strategy Gaming Society, and a one-year subscription to Abstract Games. The top two finishers will be submitted to a variety of game publishing companies for their consideration.

In addition, the top two games will be published on About Board Games, in The Strategist (the Strategy Gaming Society newsletter) and in Abstract Games. Additional games may also be published in the same outlets. About Board Games, The Strategist and Abstract Games retain non-exclusive rights to publish any entry in the contest.

The goal is to crown your pieces, then to build a "crowned troika", a formation of three or more crowned pieces in a straight line, orthogonally or diagonally, all belonging to the same player.

Gameplay involves moving stacks of pieces by tumbling them in one direction. Tumbled stacks leave one piece of the stack on top of anything on a square for each square it travels in that direction. The object is to capture your opponent's largest stack.

"Inchworm combines many different game mechanisms in a unique way; e.g. piece placement, Mancala-like sowing, stacking, and turning pieces into prisoners by surrounding them. The strategy of the game is deep and rich. There is a fair handicap system to balance the game if one player is noticeably stronger than the other."

Object: Be the first player to get two Kings off the far edge of the board. This is done by laying down a carpet of friendly Checkers for the Kings to jump.

Only one piece may be moved or introduced per turn. Checkers may be introduced onto any empty square. Alternatively, Checkers may move to any adjacent, empty square. A King may only move by jumping (in any direction) over friendly Checkers or Kings, capturing as he goes. Captured Checkers may be reintroduced later, but Kings that are captured do not return to the game.

Each player selects a color. Each player in turn (clockwise if more than 2) places one piece of any color, on any vacant square, alongside a differently colored piece or pieces, if any, already in play. The first straight line of four adjacent pieces with a player's color at each end wins for that player.

Two players, Black and White, take turns to either place or move one of their pieces adjacent to another of their pieces, on an 8x8 board. In order to make a move, the players' formations of pieces must have an open space adjacent to them. The game ends when one player can no longer make a move.
