A Couple of Gamers Welcomes You To

What Couples Have Been Playing (WCHBP)
March 2019

Welcome to the "What Couples Have Been Playing" Geeklist, a monthly geeklist community for people gaming in pairs.

Use this list to post about games you've played this month as 2-player games, comment on other people's items, and throw your thumbs around! Mingle in the comments below.

Here's your step-by-step guide:

1 Play a game as a couple* within the month of March.
2 Post a geeklist entry after playing.
3 Let us know what you liked or didn't like about the game, and tell us how it plays with two (particularly for games that aren't 2p only!). If you've played it with more than two at another time, feel free to make comparisons with the 2p gameplay.
4 Provide feedback for others, chat, ask questions, and give a little thumb here and there!

BONUS ROLL
d10-5 Welcome and hello to all newbies! If you're new to our Geeklist, please let us know! We're very friendly around here, and we'd love to welcome you properly!

*For our purposes, "couple" is defined as two people playing a game. Many of us here are playing with partners or spouses, but if you play a game with your sister or your best friend, please DO feel free to post about it here too!

March Getting to Know You: Time

Last month a lot of us were commenting on the time it took us to play games, so I thought this month we could feature that idea. How much time do you typically have for gaming? For 2p games, do you have a particular length of game you enjoy? Does it depend on the day of the week? How does your playtime typically compare with the "suggested" time on the box? Is your gaming slowed by AP or family interruptions? Do you split longer games over many nights, or play short games over breakfast? Tell us about how you allocate your gaming time.

As usual, post what you're playing as a couple this month to the list! As always, please be respectful. And above all, enjoy your gaming.

A very special thank you to our list's originator, Ryan Olden.

My wife and I played this one on my tablet before bed last night. We played with the "no respawn" rule... so when you die, you lose. I was the Shaman and she was the Nomad. I was doing sort of well in the first three or four turns... getting some good power items (Runesword and Astrolabe). But about turn turn 6, things started to go south. I ended up over my head in two battles... the lost lives in two consecutive events. I died about turn 10... Game Over. LOL.

We started off the night with a game of Codenames Duet, which for me is the best version of Codenames. We won! There were some good clues in this one. My favorites were "Texas" for "tea," "barbecue," and "toast" and "cereal/serial" for "bowl" and "magazine." I love that this game gives you an opportunity to think outside the box.

Next up was Thunder and Lightning. We just got this game a few weeks ago and already it's an instant classic. My partner has whooped me every single time (last night was no exception). Somehow I keep drawing Odin's ring early in the game and she always manages to read me like a book, using Freya to reveal it in my hand or on the battlefield. This time, she revealed Odin's ring on the battlefield and then used Gungnir to snipe it. Game over.

This game is epic and super fun every time we play it. Maybe one day I'll win...if I get lucky.

The Mind works great as a two player game, especially for couples, since you can read each other so well. We kinda maybe sorta won our first game?? Admittedly, it was a dubious win, since on Level 12, we flubbed a rule by discarding our lowest cards to the pile instead of off to the side, which caused some problems since I had a card lower than her discarded card. Before I could play it, she dashed off three in a row that were higher. We had to redo that part of the level, but then I knew what the three lowest cards in her hand were, so we had an unfair advantage.

Not sure if it counts (and who cares?), but it's the closest we've ever come to winning this little game.

Next we played my partner's favorite game – Star Realms. I don't love it as much as she does, but it's a great little game when you just want to unwind. Usually she trounces me, but somehow I won by going heavy on the Mechs and Blobs in the early game.

Finished off the night with a game of The Fox in the Forest. This is such a refreshing take on the trick-taking genre. I played a lot of classic trick-taking games growing up, both with my grandfather (Rook) and with my friends (Spades, Hearts), so I have always loved them. This game definitely brings me back to childhood, but the scoring system makes it so much more tactical. You have to be flexible with your strategy, which can change mid-round at the drop of a hat, depending on what the decree card is. I love how you can fake your opponent out by taking several tricks in a row and then making them take the rest, forcing them to be "greedy" (i.e. to unintentionally shoot the moon). Of course, that can backfire on you, but it's always fun to try!

I won this one, as I usually do, but that's only because I'm more familiar with trick-taking games.

Well this is the first time I have ever put up a post about a game BEFORE we actually played it but after reading this month's questions about playing games over breakfast we decided to start our bitter cold lazy Saturday with some B&B (Breakfast & Boardgaming) and of course the most important B (BACON). 12 days after surgery and Terri is doing a pretty good job of standing, and walking isn't too bad in short amounts. Unfortunately no sitting or bending for up to 3 months until the hamstring completely heals back to the bone. So we set up Agricola on the high kitchen table that she can stand up at and are having breakfast and going to try to get in a whole game. If she gets tired we can always move the game to the folding table by the bed so she can lay down.

Unless you don't or can't eat pork, Bacon is a fantastic start to breakfast followed up by some eggs and croissants. Lets play stage one and start on these farms. While we are eating we are already talking about what we are going to play next and for the rest of the day. We decided to make it a Farm Themed Game Day and if all goes well and she is up to it we will be playing Clans of Caledonia next, followed by Fields of Arle, then ending the day with Fields of Green.

I am pretty certain that if we make it through all 4 of those games we will both be pretty farmed out on farm games Terri said to tell everyone thanks for all the well wishes.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and gets some gaming in.

EDIT: The first game of our Farm Themed Game Day is in the books. I was able to get my house upgraded to stone and all 5 of my family members in play and pulled out a 41-34 win over Terri.

Here is how my farm looked at the end of the game:

This was her farm. she always plays red when its available:

This game is a classic for a reason and plays fantastic and pretty fast with 2 players. Once we finished breakfast and really got to playing the game probably took us less than an hour to finish. Great game for 2 players and deserves all the accolades it has got over the years.

Neither of us are particularly interested in the Japanese theme. So it didn't seem like a game for us.

kept saying how good it was. So I was intrigued.

I finally won a German copy in a UK Maths Trade a few months ago. But we never got around to playing it... I didn't like the graphic design on the German box (although the art is the same, the design has a much lighter touch on the English box that better matches the theme). And it's not a game Mrs M. would pick out from our collection.

So... I ended up deciding to trade it again, for an English copy with the cover art that I like.

I did this in the UK Maths Trade last month. And then I received a message to say I'd been kicked out of the Maths Trade! There's a rule that you're not allowed to trade a game for the same game. Although the rule wasn't written anywhere.

I was sore about this. I hate to break rules. And I'd lost out on 3 other trades I was really excited about!

Overall it left a bad taste in my mouth, and I didn't want anything to do with Hanamikoji.

But... it keeps coming up on this geeklist.

So tonight we decided to try it. After two plays, we're both baffled on strategy. But it's quick, easy to teach, and the decisions are engaging. Plus Mrs. M even likes the art. "I'm not usually a fan of Japanese style art," she said. "But I really like it in this game."

It's a keeper!

I'll still be looking to get an English copy though. That German box is so ugly.

But sometimes push-your-luck games deal bad luck to everyone. That was tonight. As a result, it outstayed its welcome.

C'est la vie.

We had a small game gathering today that started with 3 of us (me, Nicole, and Q). We played a 3 investigator game of AH 3rd ed. We lost in the late game due to doom. But after Nicole left, Q and I gave it another go with just two investigators. We lost again... but this time because we really didn't have a monster hunter character. We could evade the monsters... but eventually, they kept swarming us... and we couldn't have encounters.

This frustrated Q immensely... whose philosophy is that a game should be winnable most times or it isn't a good game. Personally, I was having a great time! Even losing.

It's a deck-building racing game. Plays pretty quickly with some interesting concepts.

After Agricola I had to run some errands and get in a little winter fun as in some sled riding. The little boy in me just never seems to grow up and become an adult

It is amazing how you can forget about the fact that the temperature is 15 degrees when you are zooming down the hill, yet you can really feel its sting when you are trudging back up the hill.

Just as fun as when I was a little kid.

So what does all of this child like fun have to do with board gaming as a couple? Well when I got home Terri was ready for a game of Clans of Caledonia which is one of the few games that I have Kickstarted. Terri has won every game of Clans that we have ever played and hopefully I can change that.

This is a great game and it plays very nice with 2 players. I was Clan Buchanan which allowed me to grab 2 export tiles at once and complete 2 at once if I had what they required. Terri was Clan Stewart which gave her a discount on the Market and paid her extra when she sold items at the Market. The game started great and I grabbed an early lead in Export Tiles completed and in points which lasted through 3 rounds.

Before I knew what hit me, she had Cheese, Bread, and Whiskey factories all over the board and she was actually 2 export tiles ahead of me although we were very close in points on the score board.

By time we finished Round 5, I knew that her undefeated streak at this game was intact. Even though it wasn't needed as I could clearly tell the results, we grabbed the score sheet and did final scoring. Terri won pretty easily 169-135. I must have been worn out from sled ridingwhistle

We decided to play another game of Clans of Caledonia after we finished Ganz Schon Clever and I thought I was doing really well until Final Scoring when Terri scored 85 points from her Cotton and Tobacco while I scored 60 from Sugar Cane which turned out to be the rarest export. She beat me on Settlements and on Most Exports filled so I'm not even sure how I thought I had any chance at all. Her undefeated streak at Clans of Caledonia continues 176 - 155.

This game has some similar mechanics to Terra Mystica and a few other games but does a good job of standing on its own and it never overstays its welcome as Round 5 is here and gone before you know it. We finished the game in under an hour. To tell you how much I enjoy this game, I looked back over my logged plays and I have NEVER won a single game of it even when we played it with 3 and 4 players, yet I still think its a great game.

We got this game a little over a week ago after kickstarting it forever ago. I like the simple idea of the bluffing. It seems to work OK with two, but will probably be much better with more.

We took a break from work to play our first few games of Fugitive by Tim Fowers, which I've been eyeing for awhile and just got in the February math trade. This is our second Fowers game after Hardback, which we enjoy quite a bit. Fugitive is an elegant and charming thematic deduction game in a small package. I love asymmetrical two-player games, and this one is no exception. The artwork is lovely and has a nice 1960's vibe that tells the story of the chase in a quasi-cinematic way. Definitely a keeper!

My wife and I played this last night for the first time in about 3 years. We both enjoyed it, and I think its a great couples game, as the turns move fast and you can never stop someone from going where they want to go. She barely won 92-91.
