I have been to Essen twice before - the last visit being in 2000. On previous trips I've cursed my lack of preparation that might have better informed my purchasing. So, this time, I'm going prepared with a list of prospective purchases and as many translated rulesets as I can find.
Some of these are prospective buys based on reviews of games from the last couple of years - mostly culled from Counter, this site and r.g.b. Others are just those that have a high froth-factor from the pre-release information, and (sadly) the shots of the bits that I've seen.
Any advice?

This looks so up my street, and the bulk of the reviews that I've seen just confirm it's purchaseability. In particular the "Multi player solitaire" and "building your own little city" comments make me think that this will also be popular with my wife who likes Settlers, Puerto Rico and Serenissima for just those aspects.

Hmmmm. Wargamey. Never seen this dice tower in action before, but I intend to check it out. Playing Europa Universalis recently has made the setting appeal. May be able to persuade my Missus to play on the basis that she likes Carcasonne even though that's quite wargamey too. Andd you get to build stuff that improves the economy! Probably another very liekly purchase.

> Well, this looks like a definite buy too. Obviously, I'll be hunting for a translation, but even without one I think this is a definite buy. May be lucky enough to get a try-out if we manage to find some of those english speakers that capture tame bilinguists and chain them to a copy of the rules over the weekend.

How have I managed to avoid this for so long? Somehow it slipped the net. Might me able to pick it up cheapish if I look hard on the first day.

I played this at Summit in Killarney this year and liked it a lot. I like blind bidding and the division of the "pie" rule is pretty neat. Maybe a bit too similar to some other games but if I see it at a reasonable price I might give it a go.

I've never played it, but it appears on enough "top ten" and favourites lists to make me want it. I remember seeing a few second hand copies at the market stands in years gone by so I may be able to find a copy in good condition that won't break the bank.
