While Christina and 6 (there was a birthday!) were out, 7 and I stayed home. We recently acquired Mole Rats in Space, so we wanted to give it a try! It's a fun cooperative game that is a bit of a twist on Chutes & Ladders. There's a fair amount of strategy involved for a cooperative kids game, and we enjoyed it quite a bit! I recommend this one for anyone with age-appropriate littles.

In the end, we won on the next to last card! (You have to beat the game before you run out of cards or everyone loses.)

After 7 and I were done playing Mole Rats in Space, we moved on to teach 7 how to play Azul. I was a bit hesitant, wondering if 7 was up to the challenge, but I needn't be worried. Seven picked up the game very quickly! We played two rounds today, and 7 is already asking for more. This is still one of Christina's favorite games, so 7 might be joining us on occasion in the near future.

I've heard rave reviews about this one and once again we weren't disappointed. I think it's a little different than most of the games we play, and I love games that offer so much in such a small package. We might have to go ahead and buy Puerto Rico after this. I don't anything negative to say about it other than it's not our favorite. Still a great game though!

Amid one million errands today, I stopped by a friend's place for a latte on the patio and pulled this little gem out for a quick match. Second Chance's polyomino cards give me all the feelings I like best about Uwe's hit Patchwork, but in a compact, portable format. Good stuff.

Had a hold order waiting for wingspan for quite a while, so finally got this wonderful expansion in and organized! My fiance had never played the base game, and after reading up on the expansion I figured it'd be perfectly fine for her to jump in to the expansion without needing to play the base game separately first.

(see if you can spot the mistake!modest)

probably my favorite game, unfortunately don't get it to the table often due to its table presence and overall length, the explanation took longer than I had hoped since my fiance depended on me to explain everything rather than watching a video, but once we got going it was alot of fun (still took a whopping 2.5 hours whistle )

hadn't played in a while and the new Norwegian board threw me off a bit for my old strategies, so I dabbled in a bit of everything and only ended up with 77 to my fiance's first time score of 56 (she did much better than I did, the first time I think I barely got 30 )

anyone who's looking for a Agricola + patchwork style uwe mashup, I highly recommend it!

Another day, another play of this fun card crafting game! I think we are going to be all in on the expansions for this one. We loved it yet again. I had fun even though my wife thrashed me 37-26. I am looking forward to adding in more of the expansion content than what we have been playing with (base game +Mystic Vale: Vale of Magic)

Lots and lots of Arkham for us in the last month. We tend to go in phases with fave games to play together and currently this is at the top of the list.

This month we finished off the final 3 scenarios for Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Path to Carcosa: Expansion and then last night we played both of the scenarios in Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Guardians of the Abyss: Scenario Pack as a stand alone mini campaign. I will admit I was super looking forward to playing Abyss since I bought it. I love the artwork, the story was really interesting/fun and most of all I really like the location/setting. So it was great to finally get to play it.

Normally after a stand alone scenario you start fresh with a new campaign vs when you play it as a side quest, but in this instance we will be keeping the 8xp we earned/card upgrades as well as the story assets and physical trauma and moving on to Arkham Horror: The Card Game – The Forgotten Age: Expansion. One of the story assets I got seems really fun/neat so I'm looking forward to using it in our next game. It was a big reason why I wanted to continue on with our currently injuries. hah

I'm playing Diana Stanley and my partner is play Jenny Barnes.

I REALLY like Otys but my partner does not. He offered to play a pity game and so we played it for the 1st time in more than a year. I had thought about letting this game go since I don't particularly enjoy the solo experience and it'll never get a lot of play, but I don't think I will just yet. It's full of multiplayer solitaire and puzzly goodness and I'm going to keep it for a bit.

I don't know if this game flew under the radar or what, but I rarely see it on many people's lists of recommendations or favorites. However we really ended up enjoying this one! It is a cube drafting worker placement game with a twist. Your family members (workers) can die, and this adds a unique and strategically important element to the game. The downside is AP...I spent a few turns staring at the board without a clue as to what to do next. Also the game can end somewhat quickly which may ruin certain plans and paths you wanted to take. All in all though we loved it and can't wait to play it again.

Sunday I had a chance to have a little game day with my good friend. When he arrived I had Dice Forge set up on the table as a warm up before we got into some heavier gaming. This game is such a good time. I keep wanting to bring it back to the table even though I almost never win. You would think that in a game with so much dice rolling luck the wins would even out, but after having played 8-10 times against him I have lost all but once. This leads me to believe there may be more strategy than meets the eye and that I just don't get it. This was no exception and I ended up losing again 119-128.

Next to the table was Tzolk'in. It took a bit to get everything set up and re-familiarize ourselves with the rules but after a quick refresher we were off and running. Essentially the game comes down to basic worker placement but balancing your need of resources with the timing of the actions you want to take can be quite the challenge. My friend focused mostly on buildings, monuments, and the temple tracks while I focused on food, skulls, and keeping up with him on the temple tracks. In the end his strategy gave him the victory 56-48. Had I had one more resource on the final turn I could have moved an additional spot on a temple track and come within one point after taking away his lead. If I could change one thing about this game I would tweak the balance of these tracks vs. other strategies. I have only played two player games but I would assume this may be fixed with more players.

We still had some time so for our final game we broke out our favorite, Terraforming Mars. This has turned into quite the nail biter almost every time we play. I've heard people complain that TM can be too lucky without a draft but in our 20+ plays we still haven't felt the need to do so. I have found that typically everyone will get unlucky with their card draw a few rounds and have great luck on a few others. For the most part it evens out due to the number of cards you have the chance to purchase throughout the game. Sure, you may need to shift your strategy depending on what cards you get but that is just part of the game. I had a leg up on him the first 3-4 times after teaching him but most plays since then have had less than a 10 point difference in our final scores and a significant number of those have been within 5 points. Today was no different, I ended up getting my first win of the day 82-78.

First ever play.

After first been introduced to pure engine building in Wingspan a few weeks ago, I was super-keen to play TM. Thoughts? A bit of a rough diamond! The production quality is lower than any game I've played since getting into the hobby (although I really like the project cards) but it plays so smooth and I like the integration of engine building with the shared game board - it makes it a lot more thematic than I thought it would be.

Anyway, the wife won 87-82.

Keen to play again and eventually introduce drafting and the corporate era cards (which seem a little nasty!) and can see me buying an expansion or two aswell.

Thursday was board game night, so I decided to try to thin my collection by playing some games that I'm on the fence about.

Kashgar was up and it didn't fare well. My problem with it is the Patriarch cards. They're really annoying and you're constantly dealing with them. There's also no real way to get rid of then, unless you get lucky with the card draw.

Ah well, I've already sold it so it's all good!

Rapa Nui is one of my favorite games to play online, but I haven't gotten this to the table in a while. Would it still stand up?

Yeah, it totally did! I really like getting stuff on my opponent's turn and trying to figure out which card to take and uncover.

However...this is also on the trading pile. Rapa Nui was reprinted as Bali. Bali has one existing expansion and one forthcoming expansion which I'm interested in, so I've got to upgrade! (I've already bought the game and expansion...)

(I will miss saying Priester though!)

I'm visiting with my parents this week, so after seeing this game pop up here so often, I decided to pick this up while I was at the local game store.

I've played this 4 times with Mom, so it's a hit! This feels like Patchwork, but without having to worry about income or buying anything! Finally, I can play SimTetris to my heart's content!

The only small issue I have with the game is that frequently Mom and I would need second chances on the same turn, so I would draw her card first. She seemed to always get the large blocks and I the small ones.

From now on I'm going to draw 2, shuffle the second chance cards, and deal them out, instead of drawing one at a time.

Yesterday was a full gaming day for me. Early in the morning got The 7th Continent out for some solo play, then headed out early afternoon for a friend's Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition) Curse of Strahd campaign, then back home to finish (well, get to a good save point) in 7th Continent. After dinner, I asked April if she wanted to play something. She agreed, and after a little cajoling, I made her pick a game (gasp!). I was very pleased when she chose one of old standbys (but one that we haven't played in a bit), Castles of Burgundy. We played with the The Castles of Burgundy: 1st Expansion – New Player Boards.

April dominated this game from the first roll. She tends to like to maintain first player advantage here, and didn't change tactics this game. I had a hard time trying to control the dice, and seemed to always roll dice that put me at a disadvantage to draft tiles. I think I took more workers this game than I can previously recall doing.

At one point I was fairly close on the score track, but April had way many more bonus points (and silver) than I did. April won 166 - 135.

This remains one of our favorite games. I'm hopeful that the 10th anniversary reprint addresses some of the color and iconography issues that make this more difficult to teach than it needs to be.

This is a nice little 2-player game that was introduced to my wife and I at a con. The set collection is tight and the game usually ends up very close when we play (15-13 win for my wife this time). It's a fun little 30-minute weeknight game we like to break out now and then.

For the first Saturday evening in a while we didn't have any plans or anyone coming over, so my wife and I wanted to play a larger game together. Clans of Caledonia it is! I adore this game. I don't adore when I take a contract in round 1 that I can't possibly complete for until round 3 of 5. Bonehead mistake on my part, and boy did my wife capitalize on it. She won 142-116. Aside from my mistake, we had a fantastic time playing. Solid play time of just under 2 hours. Lots of decisions to make, like where to place on the board, when to buy and sell resources at the market, and when (and when not) to go after contracts. Good stuff all around.

My wife and I got in our first play of The Fox in the Forest last night and it didn't disappoint, although Karen was considering not speaking to me at the end.

She took the first two hands and was up something like 15 to 3. I then turned it around and forced her into "greedy" territory over the next three hands giving me a 28 to 22 win.

Our 1st play and we decided to only play with modules 1 and 2; module 1 is the base game and module 2 adds schnapps and entertainers. I had a very positive impression from our single play and I'm very eager to play it again, adding in at least module 3 which will add a reputation track, bards, and slightly more advanced customers. I'm actually hoping I can persuade my partner to play it again this evening. *fingers crossed*

With Inns and Cathedrals.

kiss still hasn't worked out the finer points of farmers. Though she did manage to steal a city from me. A huge one too. I got back at her though. I dropped a cathedral on one of her cities, then "helped" it along a few times by adding a few choice three sided city tiles. Even so, she only needed one more piece to complete it by the end of the game. In the end though, the farmers saved my bacon.
