Welcome to the July 2019 edition of the GMT P500 update list, whose purpose is to showcase all the new games coming through the GMT P500 system.

Please thumb this geeklist if you enjoy it— it helps others see it and take part in the conversation.

Don’t forget the homebrewed, two-fold rating system.

Veterans (games on the P500 for at least one month) get stars:
for the veteran game with the best growth
for the veteran game with the second best growth
for the veteran game with the third best growth

While recruits (games new to the P500) have their own, number-based rating:
d10-1 for the highest debuting recruit
d10-2 for the second highest debuting recruit
d10-3 for the third highest debuting recruit

As usual, don’t hesitate to suggest, criticize, and threaten to your heart’s content.

You can also subscribe to the GMT Monthly P500 Geeklist Announcement Thread.

As noted previously, we're now giving you the status of a game inside our system in these updates with a general estimate of what that means in terms of months until release. For very near-term games, those estimates are going to be very accurate. For the games just going into the art department or nearly there, we are giving you a range of times. Each month you will be able to follow progress as games get added and moved between pre-art, the art department, and the printer.

That said, here is our most current Tentative Production Schedule from Tony and Mark. Games with a ** following their entry are currently at the printer (we are a little more certain about scheduling on these).

Here is a brief tease for P500 additions lining up in the coming months. Note that this is not a comprehensive list, so I will switch these up a bit from month to month. My hint from a few months back of "Something new for Commands & Colors players" referred to this month's new La Grande Battles expansion for C&C Napoleonics. Last month's hint of "A new 20th-century strategic game" referred to this month's new Storm Over Asia. Over the coming 1-6 months, I anticipate that we will add:

A new Lunchtime Series game
A new strategic-level block game
A new 4-player CDG on a very interesting topic
Something new for those of you who like WWI games
A new GBoH series game

STORM OVER ASIA

d10-2

Current Preorders: 187 (-) 0 month on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $72 ($105)

Designer: Bruce Harper

Player count: ?

Storm Over Asia is both a companion game to GMT’s A World at War and Gathering Storm, and is a game in its own right, with its own victory conditions. Starting in 1935, Japan, China, Britain, and Russia prepare for war without being sure of just what is coming. Japan must balance its expansion in China, an impending confrontation with the United States and Russia, and the impact of the Pacific theater in a global war. China, Britain, and Russia must try to resist immediate Japanese expansion, while at the same time laying the groundwork for the successful prosecution of war in the Pacific. These short-term and long-term goals will often be in conflict, and misjudgments in either direction may have dire consequences.

NO RETREAT! BATTLES: 1942

d10-2

Current Preorders: 187 (-) 0 month on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $50 ($75)

Designer: Carl Paradis

Player count: 1-2

In No Retreat! Battles, no more Russian, French, Italian, Polish, Western or African Fronts; you’ll get close and personal with smaller-scale engagements. Critical Battles like Iwo Jiwa, the Capture of Berlin in 1945, Battle of the Bulge, Kasserine Pass, Kursk, Casino, Tarawa, and dozens of others. The map will be small, usually half a regular GMT playing surface, and the counters just numerous enough to have a good game without been swamped by game pieces. The games will also be relatively quick playing, and fast to set-up. A good example of the size of a NR Battle game is the Crete bonus mini-game included in No Retreat! The African Front.

THE BARRACKS EMPERORS

Current Preorders: 192 (+19) 2 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $34 ($49)

Designer: Brad Johnson and Wray Ferrell

Player count: 1-4

The Barracks Emperors is a strategy card game set against the backdrop of the Roman Crisis of the Third Century, during which at least 45 different men made a claim to the throne of the Roman Empire. In this game, 1-4 players represent prominent political factions attempting to gain control over the men who would be Emperors of Rome. Players deploy the influence available to them (represented by the cards in their hands) to claim imperial reigns (represented by the historical Emperor cards arrayed on the board.) But they must be very careful, because politics is a complex game, and sometimes attempting to exert your influence necessitates aiding someone else in their own plots. Play your cards cleverly to capture Emperors and score the most points to win.

SAINT-OMER TO SAINT-CRISPIN

Current Preorders: 278 (+4) 22 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $49 ($72)

Designer: Mike Nagel

Player count: 2 players

The Hundred Years War (1337 to 1453) was a dynastic struggle between the English house of Plantagenet and the French house of Valois for control of the French throne. Armies from across Europe would ally with these families, spreading combat as far from Gascony as Scotland and Portugal. Chivalry rose and fell on the backs of personalities like the Black Prince, Charles the Bad, and Pedro the Cruel, fought over battlefields at Creçy, Poitiers, and Agincourt. By the end of this period, chivalry would be in ashes and from those would be born the nations of England and France.

Saint-Omer to Saint Crispin is a follow-up (or, perhaps more accurately, a prequel) to Mike Nagel's Charles Roberts award nominated game Sun of York, that covers tactical battles between the English, French, and their respective allies during the Hundred Years War. The game uses a card-based system to activate units for movement, combat, and rally during each of the eighteen(!) individual scenarios. A large variety of combat units are ready for combat, including impetuous French knights and the feared English longbow men. Leadership is critical on the field of battle as command is not only needed to move combat units, but also has an impact upon how they perform. Combat is swift and bloody, with the victor determined by whoever holds the field.

Battles Included:

• LA CAPELLE (HYPOTHETICAL) - 23 October 1339
• SAINT-OMER - 26 July 1340
• MORLAIX - 30 September 1342
• AUBEROCHE - 21 October 1345
• BLANCHETAQUE - 24 August 1346
• CREÇY - 26 August 1346
• NEVILLE’S CROSS - 17 October 1346
• CASSEL - 8 June 1347
• BÉTHUNE - 13 June 1347
• POITIERS - 19 September 1356
• COCHEREL - 16 May 1364
• AURAY - 29 September 1364
• NAJERA - 3 April 1367
• PONTVALLAIN - 4 December 1370
• ROOSEBEKE - 27 November 1382
• ALJUBARROTA - 14 August 1385
• HUMBLETON HILL - 14 September 1402
• AGINCOURT - 25 October 1415
In addition to the large number of historical battles, rules are included allowing players to design their own custom armies. As an added bonus, owners of Sun of York may also use the components provided by Saint-Omer to Saint Crispin to fight out battles from the Wars of the Roses in a more compact space.

MYSTERY WIZARD

Current Preorders: 292 (+1) 10 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $38 ($55)

Designers: Zachary Ebehart, Aiden Guiffre and Jackson Warley

Player count: 2-6 players

Mystery Wizard is a game for 2 to 6 players that takes around an hour to play, starring 8 unique spellcasting characters, each providing a radically different strategic experience. When each player chooses a wizard, they are selecting a totally unique set of spells and abilities which will flavor their strategic choices and paths to victory.

Each wizard begins the game in their village, in a corner of the hexagonal board. In the center of the board is a tower filled with ancient secrets. The objective of the game is to loot the tower and return two of its Mysteries home to your village. However, Mysteries are scarce, and in order to secure your own, you’ll need to take them from someone else. Fierce opposition from rival wizards will take the form of fireballs, cyclones, wild animals, lightning bolts and more, leading to a chaotic capture-the-flag brawl where alliances can form or dissolve in the blink of an eye.

Players must also navigate the effects of villainous priests, friendly goblins, burning desert sands, civil war, and more. A dynamic and engaging quest system brings the hexed isle to life with events and monsters, and provides a way for wizards to earn enchanted gear and powerful spells by seeking out lost temples and buried treasure. However, a creeping madness threatens to corrupt the land if the wizards do not move fast enough. The tension and difficulty slowly increase throughout game and lead to an end game characterized by knife’s edge decision, where making one wrong move could spell doom.

PLAINS INDIAN WARS

Current Preorders: 342 (+5) 23 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $43 ($65)

Designer: John Poniske

Player count: 1-4 players (best with 2)

The Great Plains in the latter half of the 19th century was a cultural battleground. The Native way of life was under siege by an avalanche of invaders seeking land and progress. Plains Indian Wars reduces this monumental and catastrophic series of conflicts to its basic elements: A settler surge via long snaking wagon trains, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, east and west, and the cavalry sent to protect them all. At the same time, Plains Indian Wars seeks to offer the Native-American player the opportunity to unite earlier, hold their own and perhaps even prevent European-American success.
Plains Indian Wars can be played by 1-4 players, but is best played as a two-player game. Game play averages 60-90 minutes.

1918/1919

Current Preorders: 345 (+5) 21 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $30 ($49)

Designer: Ted S. Raicer

Player count: 2 players

In 1992, Ted S. Raicer published his first design in the late lamented Command Magazine, 1918: Storm in the West, covering the last nine months of WWI on the Western Front. The game was an immediate success, earning a Charles S. Roberts Award nomination, and leading to the design of a Plan 1919 variant which assumed a German defensive strategy in 1918 and an all-out Allied assault to win the war the following year. GMT is pleased to offer a new boxed version of these classic Great War designs, with new artwork, and including an additional 1918 Allied Offensive scenario published later in Command.
This new GMT boxed version of 1918/19: Storm in the West is a two-player system that also works fine for solo play. Units are mostly corps (divisions for the USA, whose oversized units were nearly the size of Allied corps), and include infantry, tanks, cavalry and air support. The Germans start the 1918 campaign with large numbers of Stosstruppen, trained to overcome the trench stalemate of the previous three years. This gives the German player a strong offensive capability in the first half of the game. But these “shock troops” are a wasting asset, and if the Allies survive the initial blows, growing numbers of US troops and Allied tanks will see the Germans forced into a desperate defense in the game's second half.
In the Plan 1919 campaign, the Germans are assumed to have used the collapse of Russia to stabilize the Balkan and Italian fronts, forgoing the historical 1918 Kaiser's Battles in the West. The Allies are thus faced with a strong German defense, but with a fully mobilized American army and backed by masses of tanks and planes. This hypothetical campaign challenges the Allies to leverage these arms into the world's first blitzkrieg, while the Germans fight to force a stalemate that will leave them dominant in Europe.

Preorder Price (List Price): $45 ($65)

Designer: Michael Gustavsson

Player count: 2 players

After the defeat of Operation Battleaxe in June, a lull settled in North Africa, and the Axis siege of Tobruk continued. The Allies used this time to build up their strength and the 8th Army was formed. Before dawn on 18 November, the 8th Army was ready to strike and the Allies launched a sweeping offensive into the Axis controlled Cyrenaica (Eastern Libya) in order to relieve the besieged fortress of Tobruk. After a series of swirling battles, the Axis had to withdraw and the siege was lifted.

Michael Gustavsson, co-designer of FAB: Golan’73 is back with volume IV in the Fast Action Battle series. In this game, as the Allied player, you control the XXX and XIII corps, Tobruk Garrison and the Strategic Reserve force of the 8th Army. As the Axis player, you control the DAK (Deutsches Afrika Korps), the Italian XXI corps and the Corpo d’ Armata di Manovra (CAM) of the Panzergruppe Afrika commanded by the famous Erwin Rommel. Units in the game represents regiments/brigades and some battalions, while assets are mostly battalion size and turns are 1-2 days in time.

CLASH OF SOVEREIGNS

Current Preorders: 455 (+22) 4 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $45 ($69)

Designer: Bob Kalinowski

Player count: 2-4

Clash of Sovereigns (COS), GMT’s 2-4 player card-driven game of the War of the Austrian Succession, has been 9 years in the making. It is a free-wheeling, faster-playing, stream-lined “nephew” of the widely-regarded Clash of Monarchs (COM).

I love big CDG’s, but it’s such a tough style of game to get played consistently.

COMMAND & COLORS: NAPOLEONICS EXP 7: LA GRANDE BATTLES

d10-1

Current Preorders: 480 (-) 0 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $59 ($85)

Designer: Richard Borg

Player count: 2-8

The Commands & Colors: Napoleonics game system allows players to effectively portray Napoleonic Grande size battles, as well as smaller historical actions. The scale of the game is flexible and varies from battle to battle. In some scenarios, a unit may represent an entire division, while in others, a unit may represent a single regiment or battalion. During play, the Command cards drive movement, while creating a “fog of war”, and the battle dice resolve combat quickly and efficiently. The stylized battlefield maps emphasize the important terrain features and highlight the historical deployment of forces in scale with the game system. Finally, the Napoleonic tactics you will need to execute to gain victory conform remarkably well to the advantages and limitations inherent to the various Napoleonic national armies of the day and the actual battlefield terrain features on which they fought.

EXPANSION OR EXTINCTION

MADE THE CUT!

Current Preorders: 507 (+9) 12 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $69 ($105)

Designer: Stuart Pierce

Player count: 2-4 players

Expansion or Extinction takes 2 to 4 players into a future where Sol, after colonizing many of the closest stars, succumbed to internal pressures and died in a fiery holocaust of future weaponry. Now earth’s colonies are recovering, and beginning to exert their own dominance on the stars around them. Based on the award-winning Triumph and Tragedy game system, Expansion or Extinction expands upon this proven and highly popular game system.

Expansion or Extinction begins as each of the player’s star systems have rediscovered the technologies which make space travel possible again. Players must explore the systems around them, and attempt to bring them into their sphere of influence. This can occur either peaceably through the play of Action Cards, or through military conquest.

There are three types of star systems in Expansion or Extinction. Those closest to SOL: the Core Worlds. These worlds have been settled the longest, and thus tend to have the highest population, but have consumed most of their resources. Those furthest out: the Outer Rim worlds, which were settled just before SOL’s fall. These tend to have low population but high resources. And between those extremes are the Green Worlds…where the players start, here there is a good balance of population and resources. But beware, these worlds are on the cusp of challenging for dominance on their own, and have the fleets to make their conquest a hard-fought struggle!

Designers: David Fox & Ben Hull

Player count: 2 players

The BAYONET & MUSKET series will cover the period of the War of the League of Augsburg, 1688-1697, and the War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-1714. In western Europe, the figure of the great King of France, Louis XIV, dominated the scene, leading a newly united and energetic France to expand and secure its frontiers into Germany, Spain, northern Italy, and the Spanish Netherlands, a course which ran into the natural opposition of Great Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Dutch United Provinces.
Larger national armies, reinforced by a multitude of German allies and hired troops, far exceeded anything seen before in Europe; the battles of Steenkirk (1692) and Malplaquet (1709) were the largest fought on the continent before the coming of Napoleon. Great generals emerged on both sides-- for the French, the Duke of Luxembourg and the Duke of Berwick and the Marquis du Vauban, one of the greatest of all military engineers. Against them came the Imperial Prince Eugene of Savoy, and the finest commander of the age, the Duke of Marlborough.

APOCALYPSE ROAD

Current Preorders: 545 (+12) 30 months on P500

Months since passing 500 order threshold: 5

Preorder Price (List Price): $49 ($75)

Designers: Jeff & Carla Horger

Player count: 2-10 players

In the bleak future, after the collapse of our modern technological world, most of the structures we hold dearly today are no longer effective. The things that brought us comfort and ease have fallen into disrepair and disuse. Central governments have given way to localized strongmen. In some places the world is nothing but a vast wasteland and in other locals mankind thrives by calling back to its pre-modern lifestyle.

Through it all men still choose to compete and challenge each other in the various arenas. Auto racing is one of these sports that will not die. But the rules no longer apply. The racing circuits are no longer about speed and guile. Now they resemble high speed demolition derbies. The most famous organized racing competition of them all, the Apocalypse Road, is run by callous thugs and monsters who encourage drivers to arm their cars and literally destroy their opponents. It is the Roman Coliseum reincarnated.
Over time, new rules and organizational structures have taken hold. Ten teams now complete across the Thunderverse in a season-long show of firepower and twisted metal. Drivers work as part of a team struggling to complete laps under machine gun and even missile fire. The tracks, falling into decades of disrepair, are a jumbled mess of jumps, joker lanes and dirt. Much like the gladiators of old, in a time of intense anguish, the chance to be a hero, even for a day, calls drivers out to risk life and limb for wealth and food. The arena beckons, will you take the wheel?

Apocalypse Road is a race game using the Thunder Alley/Grand Prix engine. Players attempt to score points by crossing the finish line (somewhat like roller derby) and by eliminating opposing cars. The first team to 15 points wins the event and gets a double portion of foodstuffs as a reward.

FLASHPOINT: SOUTH CHINA SEA

Current Preorders: 555 (+5) 17 months on P500

Months since passing 500 order threshold: 4

Preorder Price (List Price): $32 ($45)

Designer: Harold Buchanan

Player count: 2 players

Flashpoint: South China Sea is a two-player strategy game that simulates the complex geopolitical contest currently taking place between the United States and China in a disputed region of the South China Sea. The game is driven by a card deck that captures developments ripped straight from today’s headlines, bolstered by cards with a context-setting reading of recent history, and a set of speculative cards capturing a diverse range of potential future events.

The Chinese player works to influence other countries in the region, establish territorial claims and regional hegemony, and improve its world standing. The U.S. player works to maintain influence with allied countries in the region, secure freedom of navigation, and keep China in check. Success for both players hinges on the support and allegiance of non-player countries in the region. The game stops short of dealing with a potential full-scale military conflict. Rather, it requires the nuanced exercise of political, economic, and military resources, in a form of prima facie diplomacy – on the waters, in the air, and ultimately in the minds of the people – to achieve victory.

UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS

Current Preorders: 556 (+3) 37 months on P500

Preorder Price (List Price): $41 ($62)

Designers: Mike Nagel and Steven Paul

Player count: 2 players

Under the Southern Cross: The South American Republics in the Age of Fighting Sail is the fourth volume of the highly regarded Flying Colors series of games on naval combat. The focus is on the southern part of the South American continent: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador, from the Wars of Independence starting in 1810 through the last naval war fought completely under sail between Argentina and Uruguay in 1841. These wars attracted naval officers recently unemployed by the end of the Napoleonic Wars as well as providing a proving ground for the first generation of naval heroes native to Latin America. Updated rules introduce river and tidal currents, modified grounding rules for operations in the Rio de la Plata and Uruguay rivers, and the use of ship’s boats to tow stranded or becalmed ships. In all, over two dozen battle scenarios ranging in size from a handful of ships per side, to full-blown fleet actions are presented. Also included is the return of the popular ship duel map and activation cards originally found in Serpents of the Seas (Flying Colors volume II), along with 18 ship duel scenarios.

STORM ABOVE THE REICH

Current Preorders: 569 (+10) 11 months on P500

Months since passing 500 order threshold: 3

Preorder Price (List Price): $65 ($95)

Designers: Jerry White and Mark Aasted

Player count: 1-2 players

Storm Above the Reich is a solitaire game depicting a Luftwaffe squadron of Fw190s struggling to deter and destroy the relentless daylight raids over Germany during World War Two. The player’s individual aircraft, each represented by a stickered block, must confront the mighty “combat box” formation of the United States Army Air Force, a deadly terrain of B-24 Liberator heavy bombers. Like its counterpart, Skies Above the Reich, the game is a broad strokes depiction that presents the arc of the desperate air war. Stretching from late 1942 to early 1945, Storm Above the Reich follows that trajectory in a series of missions strung together to make a campaign. Each mission will take a half hour or more to play, while a campaign can last anywhere between 6 to 60 missions.

Stand-Alone and an Expansion: Storm Above the Reich is a stand-alone game; you don’t need Skies Above the Reich to play. However, it can also serve as an expansion for that game. Storm uses the same rules as Skies, and components in one game transfer seamlessly to the other. Combined, Storm and Skiespresent eight formation maps, six pursuit maps, B-17s and B-24s. In Storm, you get an oversized staffel of 18 Fw190s, with the option of augmenting it into a Sturmbocke staffel. In Skies, you get a staffel of Bf109s, and with the games combined, the staffels can also be combined.

THE DARK SUMMER

Current Preorders: 595 (+24) 16 months on P500

Months since passing 500 order threshold: 4

Preorder Price (List Price): $38 ($55)

Designer: Ted Raicer

Player count: 2 players

The Dark Summer: Normandy 1944 is the latest in Ted S. Raicer's WWII operational series that began with The Dark Valley: The East Front Campaign 1941-45. The game uses a chit-pull activation system that determines both the order and type of each sides' actions during the game's ten action-packed turns, covering June 6 to August 21, 1944. The availability of Action Round chits (for the Germans, and separately for the British and US forces) is itself determined by the draw of Weather chits, one per turn, which reflect the importance of weather on the effectiveness of Allied air superiority and Allied shipping across the Channel. Weather also determines the number of German Reaction markers, which allow limited response to Allied actions. The “Dark” chit pull system makes The Dark Summer an excellent game for solo play, while keeping both players involved in face-to-face play.
