You all know the story, each and every one of us has had a gateway game that opened the doors into boardgaming. Be it someone who only played pictionary and monopoly or someone who didn't play any game at all and then played an eurogame or amerigame and was immediately hooked into the hobby.

This geeklist is for people to post the eurogame, wargame or amerigame that introduced you into boardgaming, and your thoughts on that game.

Many groups begin their trek through boardgaming with a light game, like Catan or Ticket To Ride or Carcassonne.

For me the game that became my gateway game into boardgaming, and in fact the first real boardgame I played, is none other than Civilization with the Advanced expansion. You can't get a more brutal introduction into boardgaming than this.

When I bought the game, I had in mind a game that wouldn't last more than two hours and would be fun to play. I got the first one wrong but got the second one right. I played this with my group and it became the group's favourite boardgame, to this day in fact.

My gateway game, and my favourite game ever. And from that day on I became addicted to boardgames.

Yeah, Risk was my true gateway game. I got it for Christmas around '95 or '96 and was hooked immediatly. One of our first games lasted 11 hours, an evening and a morning, because we played the rules wrong, but I had a blast. I played over and over again that year with family and friends.

A friend of mine ended up getting Axis & Allies. I bought Samurai Swords, then came Acquire and Tikal, and eventually I am where I am now. I still play Risk, though it isn't my favorite, but sometimes it's just nice to roll those dice!

My parents had a lot of board games in the hall cupboard when I was growing up (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/13387 What I remember of them) but the game I credit with getting me back into games as an adult is Settlers of Catan. My first game was a teaching game (around the middle of September) with two of my flatmates and myself being taught by our small group leader (small group = church group) who had played I don't know how many times before.
After that we played almost once a week for about 6 months, at which point our small group leader purchased Cities and Knights and we started playing that instead. Up until the point at which I purchased Carcassonne (nearly a year after getting C&K) we would be playing at least once a fortnight on average.

Probably like many others of you, I gained the boardgamefever by playing Carcasonne. And several years later I can still enjoy a session from time to time.

My group spent a lot of time playing D&D and i was getting bored of dungeoneering... I wanted big battles in a sci-fi setting, Battle of Hoth style.
Then i found Battletech and i became a cardboard junkie.
(Of course i played Monopoly and Risk before, but Battletech was the very first game i bought, the one that started my collection and my addiction to boardgames)

I had always played board games as a child, but CCGs and RPGs took over when I was a teen.

In college I was big into Warhammer 40k, but a change night at board game club introduced me to this.

My now business partner was play testing an early version and it brought back all those fond memories of board gaming as a child.

We released a few self produced copies of this in 2005, and are currently trying to get enough money together for a professionally manufactured version.

I was 8 and in the midst of a valiant battle against a major hay fever assault. My brother saw that as the best moment to introduce me to the world of boardgaming. The serious kind not the Parker Brothers offerings which were fun but not very challenging. This was something different, and definitely the start down to the path I still follow today. I haven't played this one in ages, and I fear the new generation of consim games have made this one obsolete.

I saw this game in a comp usa one time and bought it cause it looked like a decent game. It was alright and in the instructions it mentioned a future add-on which I looked for and got to this site somehow. I read something about the bsw and then learned lost cities from there. After that I couldn't stop playing the games and learning and buying them. Life is beautiful!

Talisman was my game. I was playing the Legend of Zelda on the NES around the time I was introduced to this. Man, did it leave an impression. A game where you start out with 4 lives just like a video game, how cool. A game where you could collect neat weapons and magical items and battle awesome monsters just like a video roleplaying game. I was hooked, I bought the game, all the expansions and the metal minis and even painted my first mini's with Talisman. Of course when I bought the game not all the expansions were out. I bought them as they were released. I'll admit it doesn't have the same magic it had back then but boy I had some good times with this one.

Before I started down the long road to playing boardgames, this is actually the first game that I picked up. I was going through a Goodwill thrift store when the game caught my eye. I ended up buying the game for a buck, and then playing it at lunchtime at my job with my co-workers. We must have played this game every day for a month straight, but I wanted to play something different. That lead me to BGG, where I found out about other cheap and different card games (Mystery Rummy:Jack the Ripper, Loot, Coloretto, Category 5)which I picked up, played and absolutely fell in love with. I really owe my horrible addiction to games from this one.

I had a range of lame (by comparison) games such as holiday, battleship, payday and a million themed games (popeye, flintstones etc etc). These games were so bad (by comparison) that they don't even warrant capital letters!

Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs was the game that made me go - "Let's stay in our pyjamas and play games all day long!"

Great components, interesting decisions and 'Take That' possibilities. Horror House and Battle for the Galaxy Zylatron were on the scene at a similar time too.

But for me board gaming came in waves and the above was for my 10-12 Year Old time period.

Things went quite for a while and then around age 14-15 I discovered -

HeroQuest and Battletech. These games reignited the passion.

They last until a few years and at around 18 my buddies and I discovered -

Shogun
Axis & Allies
Titan
Space Hulk
Supremacy

These games lasted us for a good 4-5 years.

Then I had to grow up for a while and in my late 20's I discovered -

Settlers of Catan

The rest is history...viewable in my profile.

The boardgame that got me crazy over this hobby in May 2007. I was attracted to the notion of a cooperative boardgame, and wanted to see what the game was like and how it would play out. I have used SoC to introduce my friends to boardgaming as well, and they have had nothing but glowing praise for the unique gameplay and beautiful artwork.

SoC is simply an amazing cooperative game, and is the very reason for my preference for cooperative games. Sadly, there aren't too many games of this genre out there.
