WWI - 1914 in the West

Probably the most gamed period of the war. Some say thats because it was a highly mobile stage prior to the deadlock of 1915-1918.

With so much attention focused on the German swipe through Belgium, their risky game in the East gets less attention - and even less that of their Austro-Hungarian Allies.

Not surprisingly, lots of attention to Tannenberg - a turning point in the east in 1914. Not so easily built into a game since that particular group of battles centered around Russian command rivalries and intelligence (or lack of it).

After the race for Paris and then the "race to the sea", the war turned into one of deadly attrition (the Brits referred to their typical 6000 casualties per day as "wastage") and horrendous slaughters of massed infantry against wire, trench and machine gun. Most of the names of these battles are still familiar although they got that way more for infamy then fame.

Although most of the dying took place on the Western and Eastern fronts of Europe, this war was the first "world war" because it extended around the globe. Some of these battles were minor in the context of grand strategy (e.g. Togo) while others could certainly have tipped the balance (Gallipoli). All brought the war and its horrors to peoples otherwise quite happy to have let the Europenas have another go at their endless war. Some dedicated game designers have done nice work bringing these to the fore.

1918 was the low point of the war for the Allies with the German "Kaiserschlacht" driving three huge salients through their lines. But this was their last gasp and as the exhausted and starving German troops ground to a halt, Joffre and the Americans and the tanks turned the tide in a reversal that drove the German military to ask fro Armistice.

From zeppelins and spotters, to fighters and bombers... the threat from on high did much to reinforce awareness of the growing role of technology in war.

After the "Dreadnought arms race" of 1905-1912 many thought the naval war would be crucial. Although it turned out that few truly decisive naval battles were fought it still makes for some pretty cool gaming. Certainly the overall naval situation bred some decisive factors such as the illegal British blockade and the equally illegal unrestricted U-boat campaign of Germany.

In the end it always still boils down to small groups of men running, hiding, chargng, firing and dieing. Far from the grand strategic sweep of the "Schlieffen Plans" were these more private battles. Some nice efforts to game them here.
