Once again the Friday Night Gamers of Colorado Springs gathered at the large ranch house of our friends Wes and Amy in quiet Penrose, Colorado for a weekend of games and good eats.

WesCon (named for our host, of course), has become a tri-annual tradition with our group, and something we look forward to with great anticipation. After a short 35 mile drive south, we start early Friday evening with light games while Wes grills up his awesome burgers and brats. Then we game until we drop (around 3am or so).

Saturday is a game-filled adventure as we move from theme to theme. Trading games, wargames, light card games - we play them all. We even found some time to enjoy the fine fall weather outside. Sometimes we even get to ride the horses. Around 7pm Wes fires up the grill again and we gorge ourselves on the best steak you'll ever eat. None of us can eat in a steakhouse without comparing, and the restaurants always lose. It's that good! Then, once again, we play until we can barely keep our eyes open.

Sunday we breakfast on leftovers and get in a game or two before loading up and saying our goodbyes.

This was our last gathering for 2007, and we bemoan the long months until spring, when we will gather again for a weekend of fun and friendship. We've discovered that these great weekends have taken us from a mere gaming group to close friends that consider themselves a family. As for me, I couldn't ask for better friends than the ones I've made in the FNGs.

What follows is a list of what we played, the scores as I remember them, and the day they were played.

Friday - This was the first game I played. I was curious when I saw it on the 40% off shelf at my FLGS. For that price I was willing to give it a fair shake, as I like Tom Jolly's designs. This one didn't really thrill anyone, and the poorly written instructions didn't help. George got the win over me and both of the Larrys.
Note to self - The chances of this getting played again are slim. Better trade it.

Friday - Jamey and Scott are WWII nuts, and both were eager to get in at least one game. Setting up took longer than the actual game (I can't remember which scenario they went with), but Jamey won as the Allies.
He's of the opinion that the scenarios are all tilted in favor of the Allies, and the Axis don't really stand much of a chance. We're all hopeful that upcoming scenarios and expansions will cure that.
Note to self - Download the new battles from the website and get Jamey to play it again.

Friday - New Larry brought this one, and while I've played it before, it's never been one I'm the least bit good at. I played with my usual flair for stupidity, idly playing with a couple of my pieces on the table while waiting for my turn to move the ones on the board. I realized too late that they actually needed to be on the board, but by then I was too far behind. Classic Larry snuck up behind George and stole the win from him.
Note to self - as long as Larry owns this game, there's no need to buy it.

Friday - I thoroughly enjoy the latest game from Days of Wonder, and the rest of the group agrees. This was played after dinner, so Wes got in the game. His small stadium did amazingly well but failed to get him the win. I held first until the third round, when New Larry and George both passed me.
George is also stubborn when trading, and always goes for the biggest production if someone doesn't take it away from him. We've decided that whoever can get that show will most likely win if they can also manage a couple of the big bonuses. George did so by getting the Emperor and two senators into the show. He vaulted to the win.
One of these days I'll figure this one out.
Note to self - either develop a strategy, or don't play with George any more! He's getting too good at it.

Friday - Everyone loves this game, but this time Wes and I had planned a little surprise, taking out two of the miniatures we had purchased just that day. This caused no small amount of... (there's no other word for it), bitching (good-natured though), and play proceeded. The Axis pilots (led by Wes in his Fokker tri-plane), won the battle.
Note to self - find a retailer that sells the minis before the rest of the WoW lovers steal your plane.

Friday - Having been shot down, Scott, the Larrys and I opted for a quick game of Hansa. I really enjoy this one with four players, and it was another discounted grab from the FLGS. The game was surprisingly fast; finishing in half an hour, and I lost to New Larry by only 1 point. My odds were improving.
Note to self - is it just me, or was Larry egging the others on to wronk me just a bit oo much?

Saturday - After a breakfast of my famous French toast, this was the game we chose to start the day. New Larry, Jamey and Scott had all played one time previous, but it had been a long time for them. We got set up and got going. Three hours later both Wes and myself were begging to be killed out so the game would end. It's not that it's a bad game, but the seemingly endless rules discussions were getting irritating. I held most of North America, but attacked George's South American forces enmass to spread myself thin. On his turn he wiped me out. Game over, and another victory for George.
(Note to self - from now on, only one rulebook at the table, and only one person gets to reference it, and their decisions will be final!)

Saturday - I've been wanting this one for a long time, and finally managed to get my hands on a copy on Thursday. I read the rules and got a basic grasp, but we managed to muddle through the game with few problems. I've heard and read about problems with the auction clock, and mine did tend to stick at the 180 mark. Still, we enjoyed the game immensely. I thought I was doing well enough, but New Larry's strategy of bidding on very few things paid off, and he won the game with an impressive 1.6 million. Classic Larry managed 1.1 million. Scott and I vowed not to play it again with either of them.
Note to everyone - We fixed the clock by removing the top and giving the mechanism a liberal dose of WD-40. Works perfectly now.

Saturday - Scott loves this game, as do I. He chose it and we roped two other players. I usually do well enough, but this time just couldn't pull it together until late in the game. Scott and I tied for second, giving New Larry the win.
This is a game that really deserves more table-time.
Note to self - remember to advance the counter cubes!

Saturday - My most recent acquistion arrived from a trade Friday afternoon. I was eager to try it after reading the rules, sure it would be a hit. Turns out I was prophetic. They loved it!
Amy joined us for this one while Wings of War got another play at the other table.
I lost the first game by two points to Scott, but managed to get my first win of the weekend the next game. That's right, we played it twice. Amy was really impressed with it, as she usually hates learning something that no one has played before. She even went so far as to tell Wes what a good game it was. This was my personal favorite of the weekend. I can also see why people have said that you should only play this with 5. I can't see it working very well with less than that.
Note to self - From now on New Larry will go out of his way to make sure I never win this game again!

Saturday - Larry brought this one, and he got George, Classic Larry and Garrett to play it. I didn't hear much about the game other than George winning it. The little bit that I watched did look kind of fun.
Note to self - I may have to seriously reconsider inviting George to future weekends if he's going to win just about everything he plays!

Saturday - This hasn't been played in over a year, and it's too bad, because I really like it. A.J. and Gail had showed up just after lunch, and we talked Gail into trying it. She caught on quickly enough, but her overall impression was that it took too long to play, but it was sort of fun and silly.
New Larry eaked the win by three points, despite my ameobas eating his at every opportunity.
Note to self - Play this one more, and get Intelligence first thing. That one extra point can make all the difference.

Saturday - Wes and Amy both love Cribbage, so I wasn't surprised to see the board come out. It was played for the next 2 1/2 hours by different people. No idea on final scores, but I saw several great hands come out.
Note to self - Just because your uncle was the local champion back in the 60's doesn't mean you shoul give new players advice when they ask for it. You suck at the game!

Saturday - It wouldn't be WesCon without the traditional late night game of Snorta! Gail and A.J. had never played, and they both enjoyed it. It's always rowdy and loud, and sometimes we get to laughing so hard it stops the game for several minutes. This only gets played toward the end of the day when everyone is almost exhausted to increase the silliness.
Note to self - Barkwoofabaamoohissquacksqueak is not considered a good response. In fact, it gets you laughed out of the game.

Saturday - Our usual last game of Saturday is an outing with the Knights of the Round Table. I pulled Palamedes (my favorite), and we learned early on that things were going to go badly. I suspected Jamey was the traitor, but since we only had two swords on the table I was reluctant to accuse him. My guess was spot-on, as Jamey revealed himself a few turns later, and we were unable to hinder the progression of evil to its victorious conclusion.
No matter how it turns out, we always enjoy the game, especially since Jamey did such an amazing job painting all the figures.
Note to self - The next time Jamey starts singing a victory song, kick him under the table and point to Wes.

Sunday - This is usually our traditional wrap-up game. Most people start heading out right after breakfast, but the die-hard players always hang around for one or two more, and this is the one most likely to get selected.
I thought I was doing well with stoney plains and Ovoos stones, but Amy outdid me, scoring an incredible 94 points. She was pretty proud of herself until New Larry tallied his and came up with 95. Good thing there wasn't something heavy and blunt nearby, or she would have clocked him one.
Note to self - Maybe it's time to find a new 'traditional wrap-up' game. Like one you can win.

Sunday - Amy suggested this so Wes could try it out. He liked it more than I thought he would. Despite the efforts of New Larry to thwart me again, I managed to get my second win with a surprising score of 41. I think this game will see a lot of repeat play, as it's so easy and quick.
Note to self - Play this one a lot, since it seems to be the only one you can win!
