Hot on the heels of my popular "Favorite Guitar Solo" Geeklist, I bring you this list.

Some guitar players are gods among mortals. I'm not talking about your favorite guitar player necessarily, but the guitar player you feel is the God of Guitar. This isn't a voting list, I just want to see who everyone's favorites are. Please also include if your favorite guitarist played your favorite solo as well.

Jimmy Page

I won't say he's the best. He's actually quite sloppy and nowhere near the fastest. But I don't think you can argue the impact Jimmy Page had on rock music. His heavy blues sound revolutionized rock music and brought it to a new place. For some reason, most people overlook his acoustic work which is undoubtedly his best. Take the simple yet elegant solo in "All My Love" and compare it to the sloppy mess that is the "Heartbreaker" solo.

Despite Page's flaws, he's one of the first people you would think of when you say "classic rock" or "Les Paul". He's so synonymous with that guitar that they gave him the first ever signature model.

There are certainly better guitar players, but none that match the status and influence of Jimmy Page.

Of Blue Oyster Cult.

Buck is a friend of mine. We've recorded together and played together.

His technique is impeccable and his musicianship unmatched.

Buck's Boogie and Gamera Is Missing, two instrumentals of his are just flooring in their musicianship and his iconic riffs from Don't Fear The Reaper and Burnin' For You solidify his place as one of the greatest players ever.

I'll bite first with the obvious: Jimi Hendrix (I picked the game listed here for the "Experience" rather than the "black," FYI!). Fastest? Sloppy? Whatever, says I. I never did care for that Yngwie Malmsteen method of guitar prowess evaluation. I could care less whether Guitarist A is "faster" than Guitarist B ... Jimi reinvented the way the electric guitar is played, pioneered the use of effects, and, oh, by the way, wrote some of the most beautiful songs in all of rock & roll. He had a sense of melody and lyric that the "faster" guitarists of the 80s and later could only dream of. My favorite Hendrix guitar-work? "1983 ... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)." Gorgeous stuff, and, yes, those sea-gulls are Jimi's guitar!

Some runners-up (in no order):

- Pete Townshend
- Mick Jones (from The Clash, not the other one)
- Johnny Thunders
- Kimberly Rew (from The Soft Boys)
- Tom Verlaine
- Johnny Winter
- Robert Johnson
- Jack Williams: http://www.jackwilliamsmusic.com/
- Paul Weller
- Greg Ginn

Randy Rhoads or Nigel Tufnel...tough call

Randy incorporated the classical of Blackmore and the flash of Van Halen (with awesome acoustic chops as well) into a totally unique style...not getting to witness what he would have evolved into as a player still makes me sad.

And Nigel was the first to play on 11...now that's groundbreaking!

Trey Anastasio - Phish

Part melodic genius, part technical wizard and all artist Trey Anastasio is my guitar god. And I'm not even really a Phish head but there are tracks where this man's playing really blows me away. Especially some of the live stuff.

I guess the Jerry Garcia comparisons come from his work ethic and improvisation ... to me his skill and sound is more on par with someone like Clapton.

Chuck Berry - Clapton, Beck, Page, Townsend, Richards, etc...have all said he was the "one" that inspired them as young men. So despite basic "skills" he's probably responsible for "creating" many of the players on this list.

Ace Frehley is the second generation of Chuck Berry...he probably inspired more modern players than anyone...despite his lack of technique.

OK I don't know this game, but this space goes out to the "Cool Sound" of the Master of the Telecaster, Albert Collins. "Frosty" was among *the* signature lick of the Texas blues sound of the late 50's/early 60's.

Austin, TX. in the 80's/90's was my home and I saw nearly 500 shows in that decade plus (and have the GPA to prove it )
Honorable mentions of Texas Blues/Roots:

Lightnin' Hopkins-clean economical licks influenced generations of guitarists
W.C. Clark-influenced the Vaughans among others
SRV-blazing fast aresenal of licks, he went back and got the others who would have been left behind
Jimmie Vaughan-not to be outdone by lil' bro
Denny Freeman-too long a sideman, probably *the* best lead guitarist I've ever seen.
Derek O'Brien-probably the best rhythm guitarist on the planet-could back anyone, anytime.
Jesse Taylor-"Lubbock Lightning" was a mainstay of the early Joe Ely bands that among other trivia opened for Merle Haggard and the Clash in the same year.
Rich Brotherton-Robert Earl Keen's secret weapon-virtuouso of many styles, far more than just another country picker
Rosie Flores-the Rockabilly Filly slings a mean axe
Jon Dee Graham-before SRV and Eric Johnson won Austin Chronicle awards, Jon Dee was laying it all out in a number of bands-the True Believers were the best of 'em.

Especially in the 80's and early 90's the guy would show up anywhere and just *play*. King Crimson, Talking Heads, The Bears, Jerry Harrison and of course his solo stuff (check out Big Electric Cat). Versatile, inventive and original.

Unsung Runner up: Lu Edmonds from the Damned. His skill, I think, was never exploited fully due to the style of his band, but witness the awesome work on Shriekback's Oil and Gold to hear what the guy was truly capable of.

Check out the info under his site on Wikipedia.

Without him as a pioneer, what we all think of Rock or Jazz guitar, (anything you plug in...)would not exsist. Rock and roll guitar is due to this man.

God or not, without him none of the special electronics and recording methods or amping would exsist in their current form. Not only is he a genious player, he is a genious musical engineer and he truly knows the intrument on the artistic side and from the aspect of a craftsman and inventor.

PS If anyone knows guitars, they may get a kick of how I worked Dread nought into my chosen list number

If you haven't seen the PBS special where Eddie Vanhalen tears up when he meets him I strongly encoourage you to seek it out.

This being said, my favorite is: Joe Satriani. Why I don't know but I think that his music makes me feel happier as opposed to other emotions.

Robert Fripp

Probably my all time favorite. Weird and wonderful, with a highly recognizable style, Fripp is the master of the anti-guitar solo. For those unfamiliar with his work and looking for an entry point, I'd first recommend some of the earlier King Crimson albums... In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Starless and Bible Black. I also adore the work he did with The Roches, Brian Eno and League of Crafty Guitarists. A lot of the various Crimson splinter groups and DGM projects (projeKcts), as well as Frippertronics, are also very good.

My favorite Fripp recordings are possibly the Great Deceiver box set of live Crimson recordings (mostly improvs jams) from the Starless era ('73-74).

The first time I heard Fripp play (the solo on 21st Century Schizoid Man, being the first song on their first album) I couldn't figure out if he totally sucked or if he was a genius. After about 15 straight listens in a row, I was still trying to figure it out... but I knew that I was hooked for life.

Honorable mentions go to Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot, Thurston Moore, and Jorma Kaukonen... each a genius in their own particular way.

D. Boon. I think rock and roll as an idea pretty much ended with Double Nickels on the Dime. Since then it's been 25 years of watching the corpse shamble about with bits dropping off of it.

Other notables, who I don't think have been yet mentioned here:

David Byrne, who is a much, much better guitarist than he's generally given credit for.

Robert Pollard, who is clearly in the possession of a spirit from another world.

Robert Quine, without whom "Love Comes in Spurts" would be a silly novelty song.

Tom Herman. A guy I know argues that the best guitar line ever recorded is in the barely-audible fade-in to "The Modern Dance."

Ira Kaplan. Ira Kaplan! IRA KAPLAN!!!

Nick McCabe, without whom Richard Ashcroft has dwindled to a speck.

Steve Howe. Just in case you were wondering how badly you could suck and still have me champion you: side 1 of Relayer makes up for, well, pretty much the rest of it.

Scott Johnson. If you've never heard John Somebody, your life is diminished in ways you cannot begin to imagine.

Mark Cline and Mike Richmond, who answered the musical question "What if the Allman Brothers' first names had been Ralf and Florian?" It's pretty tragic that if you search the interwebs for Love Tractor all you'll find is a goddamned Widespread Panic song.

Mr. Angus Young.

Yes, I know. But seriously, is not the power chord the primal force that causes all those who love rock guitar to effectively lose their shit and throw their fist into the air and start to test the resolve of their neck muscles through wild gesticulation? I'm just saying.

Angus didn't invent the power chord (that would probably be Mr. Chuck Berry). He didn't even perfect it (that would be Mr. Townsend or Mr. Richards). But man, oh man, did he put a shine to that thing and ride it as hard and as well as anyone ever has. The proof will be in the soreness of your neck. You might try to argue the point, but your debate won't get very far once your whole body gets taken over by the magic of the power chord!
