Welcome to
Solitaire Games on Your Table
December 2019

The Home of “Together, We Game Alone”

Welcome everyone to the end of 2019 and another glorious month of solitaire gaming. Grab a game, pull up a chair and join in because together we celebrate this wonderful hobby and sometimes game alone. The 1PG is currently the largest guild on BGG at over 12,000 members!! That’s exciting. It’s great to see this guild continue to grow!!

Guidelines

1 Play a solo game, a solo variant, or a multiplayer game solo.
2 Add an entry to this GeekList and tell us about it. Get the most out of the SGOYT Aggregator by using at least one of the following tags:

1 Add the <summary></summary> tag to include a short overview. All summaries are recorded, as on my User Overview page.
2 Add the <rating></rating> tag to rate a game on a scale of 0.5 to 5.0. Only the most recent rating for a game is recorded.

3 Be nice, but most of all have fun!
4 See something you like? Give it a thumb.

It's extremely helpful (but not mandatory) to include some thumbsup and thumbsdown describing the pros and cons of the game you played. They're great visual aids to summarize your post!

About Me

I live about an hour south of Boston, Massachusetts and have lived in this area most of my life. I used to work in television and documentary development and production for over 20 years before switching to work in higher education supporting technology in classrooms and meeting spaces as well as handling event logistics both on and off campus. I have been working at Suffolk University on Beacon Hill for over 12 years and now that I have finished up my Bachelor’s in History, I am currently studying for my Master's in Higher Education.

From gallery of jeffrhind

-- Suffolk University Law School (where I work out of) on the left and Park Street Church and Boston Common on the right. --

I became interested in board games and solitaire games when I became a widower shortly after I started working at Suffolk and my daughter, then three years old, wasn’t quite ready to play games just yet. I got into some co-op games that I could play solo and, after that, found out that I could print my own copies of games from the likes of Todd Sanders. Eventually, I got pretty hooked on the hobby and joined several gaming groups while my collection exploded to a number of games that was far too many for my small apartment.

As my daughter got older, we started playing other games. It was then I thought, “Why not create a YouTube channel and show folks all these cool kids games?” Well, that morphed into recording reviews of other games as well. I had to take a hiatus from shooting videos once real life got in the way: family, friends, work, school, and trying to have something resembling a dating life. Plus, I had told myself from the beginning that once it became too much work and wasn’t fun anymore, I would stop. Now, two years later, I’m thinking about attempting to pick up the mantle from where I left off and give it another go. But for now, some written reviews and commentary over on my blog at http://completelyboard.com and http://www.gamenitemagazine.com.

My older video content is here: http://www.youtube.com/user/completelyboard

Plus, you can purchase a micro badge as a fan Microbadge: Completely Board fan

I have been participating in the SGOYT geeklists for many years now and there are some members I am frankly in awe of; their knowledge of games, their in-depth analysis of gameplay, and others for their spectacular photography. Such an incredible group of people here!!

So here I am hosting for the very first time!! I am excited and have some things planned out below. Check them out! And please, please, please, introduce yourself if we don’t know each other already. It’s always wonderful to meet other gamers from all over the world.

Few days late to post but got a couple of plays in of this wonderful game. I managed to beat the automa on the first play through quite convincingly and was sure on the second play through I had beat them again but ended up loosing by a single victory point!

Perhaps if had laid one more egg, or not gained food that time, or, or, or....! Never mind, this game always finds a place on the table and I enjoy it every single time.

A little late to the game on this one, but I finally got a chance to play it thanks to a snow day today in Boston. It's fun and puzzly. I thought it'd be a good idea to use colored pencils to further enhance my map. Much harder to erase though.

It's hard to get a good score as my final score after subtracting the total from the scoring cards from my score gave me -4. Terrible! Couldn't play another game because I had to run out and get some shots of a beautiful sunset and a winter wonderland.

<summary>An excellent little puzzle game as you try to fit your tetris drawings into the map. Space becomes really tight at the end. You can plan ahead of other scoring opportunities in other seasons if it's not working for you now.</summary>

Last month I posted my first few plays of this nifty little game, but I felt the solo mode was way too easy. I would beat it with 2 whole rounds left to go!

Then, after reading the forums some more and re-reading the rulebook I realized an error. Apparently my villagers were reproducing asexually (budding I suppose shake), and that would understandably make it easier, since I would have one extra villager (worker) available for the first round.

So, I tackled it this morning and played 2 games (correctly) and won them both handily again. It didn't make enough of a difference, since the opening move is obviously to make another worker and then use that worker to work towards your goal, then cash in your Innovation/Ritual cards during the Village phase. This gets things going and then you can start working on your Achievements.

So, I tried my "Hard mode" solo mode with only 4 rounds and 4 Achievements required (instead of 5 rounds and 3 Achievements). And I lost! Yay! I had a lot of overlap, but that's where I actually got hurt because I didn't go for the wheat early enough, and then couldn't generate/find it quickly enough.

Here's my village and my hand at the end:
From gallery of davekuhns

I was able to complete the 8 basic resources (wood, stone, clay column) and the 3 stone wheels Achievements, but not the farming!

As long as I really am playing correctly, I'm glad that the Hard mode can be lost, and hope that I find what I'm doing wrong, and/or think of ways to make it tougher.

*Funny rules mistakes*

Anyone have a funnier one than forgetting how mammals reproduce?

This was a FTIF pickup recently and I did so without knowing anything about the game. I kind of just liked the look of the cover.

The first time I opened the box, I was taken aback by how nice the components are in this one. The cards all have this holographic, 3D type imagery on them that is beautiful. Not sure I have seen cards like this before in a game. The dice are also really nice as are the player boards and game tokens.

I have played this two player and solo and I really think the solo game is better here. You are racing to capture all of your creatures before the creatures on the opposing board escape.

Today I played on "legendary" mode and lost miserably. I think I will start with some cards in hand next game.

A fun little dice game that I brought out for the Dicember Challenge.

gives you a 15 turn limit to meet either of your win conditions. One is on the character card- as the Grey Gnome I had to get 4 shrooms. But since I was an Alchemist, if I found Eldon's Tome, I would also win!

I won after 4 turns. I found Eldon's Tome. I had 2 of the 4 shrooms I needed, so I was likely to win sooner than later.

This is play 13 of 15 for the Dicember challenge... I'm likely to finish tonight. But that won't stop the dice games...devil

One of my play goals this year was to win with every corporation both base Terraforming Mars and TfM with Venus Next. This was the last play I needed!

I played with Arcadian Communities on Hellas, base game only, and won with 86 points:

From gallery of Jy0831

For some reason, even though I really wanted to complete my play goal, I decided to give up the "easy" combo in my starting hand of 4 energy --> 1 oxygen + 1 steel plus a card that gave 3 energy production! I'm glad I didn't end up regretting this.

Because Arcadian Communities rewards building tiles on the board, I ended up doing more of that than usual.

Something strange happened at some point, so I may have had one more generation to go? I had an extra stack of 4 cards at the end of the game, so either I should have played one more generation or I forgot to take cards once during the game. I think the latter is more likely. Either way, though, it was a win, and I am done!

I ended up playing Terraforming Mars somewhat more than I wanted to because of the goal... Next year, no goals for specific games!! (Well, aside from playing everything once, and, for the new and/or very underplayed games, playing them enough to get comfortable with the rules.)

But next up is Prelude! I've played it multiplayer but not yet solo, and I'm really looking forward to the increased challenge it should bring to solo.

Mission #4.

An escape mission, like mission #2, but this time driving a truck with an assault gun on the roof.

That was fun, but less interesting than the first three missions. Here, you try to rush as fast as possible, meeting bad surprises along the way, but just trying to reach the final place.

From gallery of dobrazil

The game has some thrilling moments and offers plenty of choices. I found a precise dance in which both heroes could drive one after another, shooting some and then letting room for the other one.

It's really nice. It's just that this scenario felt less engaging than the previous ones.

Gave it one more try against Prussia 4 with Lightning's Swift Strike. And I won!

It was one of those typical anticlimactic Spirit Island moments where you don't even immediately realize that you have won.

Played this for the first time yesterday but when scoring I realized that my 50+ points can't be right... I was most suspicious about fields and harvesting so I gave the related sections another read. And, yes, I messed that up. You can only upgrade fields of the same type. My 2 wood, 2 fish, 2 apple field wasn't exactly legal... whistle

Overall I found the rulebook not very clear. Sometimes printing easily overlooked rules in bold goes a long way in helping players not make mistakes. I just finished reading the official FAQ and it is actually a great example of how it should be done. It didn't leave any questions or uncertainties that I had. I wish this was done the same way in the rulebook.

Anyway, this seems to be a very fun game and I can't wait to try it again. meeple

This game is just awesome. There are so many things to think about when playing but yet it's so simple. It strikes that perfect balance between simple mechanics and depth of choices.

Difficulty can be scaled so I'm not sure it will ever get old and those large, chunky counters are just so fun to move around.

This is definitely going to make its way to the top of my solo games list. I know little about the Russian Revolution outside of what I learned playing Soviet Dawn. whistle Yet, I love games with a historical theme and this has that.

I'm not sure how to describe this game. At its core, its area control but there are multi-purpose cards combined with a calendar game track that make hand management decisions agonizing in a good way.

I would recommend this game to all gamers but especially those lookign to "dip their toes" into wargaming as it is a great crossover.

Today I played on the second difficulty level and control went back and forth between myself (The Socialists) and the AI(The Provisional Government). The game ended in a draw but because I had previously put Lenin out on the board, I controlled the "will of the people" and therefore, I was victorious.

Such a good game. Can't wait to play it more and hopefully two player with the wife.

This is my first entry into SGOYT and it comes courtesy of my first purchase inspired by the People’s Choice Top 200 Solo Games.

I picked up Santa Maria for two reasons, it was recommended as a low-upkeep Euro for an Uwe-loving girl like myself and it was incredibly on sale here in Brazil.

From gallery of twomoredays

With some punching help from my daughter, I broke it out tonight and took for a spin tonight. I must say I am really impressed with it. For such a compact package, there’s a lot to do and think about. The mix of dice drafting and tile laying and a kind of action programming creates an crunchy puzzle. And it plays so fast! I can definitely see this becoming a weeknight staple.

thumbsup Super crunchy decisions to make on every turn.
thumbsup Low-upkeep is ideal for a solo player.
thumbsup Variable setup and lots of different paths to pursue in the future.

thumbsdown The box is unnecessarily big.
thumbsdown This is definitely a “soulless” Euro, but it’s so crunchy who cares?

Thanks for the recommendation

Setup with the Mononoaware with the Ouroboros final encounter. Things were going pretty well until I rolled 5/6 scanner symbols on the crew die. With this ship that mean an extra 2 threats get deployed. Since the Mononoaware requires at least 2 crew to do any damage that means 3 new threats get a chance to activate before I have the chance to deal with them. I manged to limp along for a few more rounds but it was too much and I was defeated before reaching the Ouroboros.

This was one of the very first things I backed on Kickstarter and despite the delays of that campaign I am very happy I did. I have gotten so many plays out of this and still have never really tried the expansion outside of one test run against the final encounter only, out of curiosity.

thumbsup Easy ruleset - helps the game to flow nicely.
thumbsup Small footprint. I can play it at my desk without having to rearrange anything
thumbsup Great replay-ability between the different ships, and expansion content.
thumbsupthumbsdown All dice rolls all the time. I dig it, but can definitely kill an otherwise good run (as demonstrated by this playthrough)

This old classic has become a bit of a go-to game in the evenings lately. Fast to set up and play, and a blast.

I have "deluxed" this copy with some laminated Ogre record sheets, some custom maps made with the online map-making tool, and some printed out player aids.

Tonight featured two Mk. III Ogres (controlled by the card/dice AI system in the file pages), against my 22 points of armour and 30 points of infantry.

From gallery of reverendunclebastard

In spite of our best efforts, the two Ogres managed to defeat our Mobile Command Post before we finally disabled them both.

From gallery of reverendunclebastard

A marginal Ogre victory.

So much fun packed in a small ziplock bag.

Yes, you saw me post on this game like 5 days ago.... But that was last month, and this is Dicember. (You know, if I keep typing it that way, I'm actually going to just keep it up and really confuse folks...)

But you didn't see it like this:

From gallery of govmiller

The cards are the same cards. The two dice- solid copper. Skulls are the pips. The helpers? Three (of a set of six) RPG dungeon crawler "baddie" dice. Same faces on six sides, six different colors. For when you don't want to (or even have) the minis to put on the table.

The dice? They don't so much roll on the table as THUNK on the table. The edges/corners aren't very rounded, so there was very little actual rolling of the dice.

Played twice- lost the first, won the second.

One more dice game to go to finish off the Dicember challenge. It won't be tonight, and I've got a long list of ones I could use. Check back tomorrow to see what play #15 is.

(And no, I won't be done. I really just might see how many games I can get played. And I have two more dice games that might land on my doorstep this month!)

What can I say? I seem to be on a zombie kick recently. This game will do just fine to scratch that itch.

I like how the characters each have a unique deck of cards. I love the fact that they are dual purpose cards that can be used for a character’s special abilities but also that personalized deck.

I also like the concept of group morale. If your morale goes to zero then you lose the game.

<summary> No Sanctuary is a good coop that manages to add some interesting gameplay mechanics with solo capabilities. </summary>

It was time to bring back what I call Tiny Epic Zelda.

It’s clear the design was inspired by Zelda. I enjoy the idea of artifacts in this game. They can be used for a character to unlock their special abilities.

It all combines for a nice quick solo game. And the theme does take me back to Zelda.

I had seen good comments about the solo experience for this game, but I was not really attracted by the vegetables farming theme. However, I found it on sale last weekend at a gaming convention I was attending and the great bargain convinced me to buy it and give it a try.

Let me tell you that I had a blast!! The amount of crucial decisions that need to be made make for a challenging puzzle:
- Do I plant this vegetable instead of using it to fulfill a delivery?
- Do I take a loan to boost my economy at the expense of a end of game penalty?
- Is it worth paying more for the cards that will ne removed from offer at the end of the round? Or can I achieve what I want to free cards that are available?
- Do I go for more casual customers vs regular customers?

I ended up with a score of 14 for my first game, which is pretty bad, but I look forward to my next game. I also look forward to playing it multiplayer as the card drafting mechanism looks very interesting.

There are definitely games easier/quicker to get to the table solitaire - and some feel almost...relaxing to play? Terraforming Mars is I think my favorite for that - even when it's not working out, the vibe of it feels thematic, and it's a theme where you don't always win. And maybe that sense of 'wow this was a TERRIBLE opening, I'm sure to lose' makes some games interesting as a challenge...if you win, wow, how! But if you lose...you went in expecting you couldn't do anything about that, so just interesting to see the narrative unfold. I doubt this will ever be displaced as my most PLAYED solo game.

That said.

Scythe? This just OOZES theme. And it almost has a Chess-like sense of obvious good openings, and what paths are needed to go down. But where adaption is needed, and how to plan out X moves in advance (which TM doesn't really allow for given the randomness of projects), and how to react to the AI deck...it just works. And it never feels un-winnable...games you lose, you look back and can SEE why you lost, you can see the oh-so-slightly-sub-optimal play that ended your game. But, still?

This is just an INCREDIBLE solo game! Obviously you queue up the official soundtrack, and then just...dive into a fascinating and interesting world and game!

So, despite 6 months since I'd last played it, this had to hit the table again! I ran an 'Automa' match ("normal" difficulty deck) with the bot playing the Nordic faction, while I had Polania-Patriotic. And man, I was hot out the gate! By the time the bot had its first non-combat star (I...umm...accidentally gave it a combat star) I already had my own first star in and nearly locked in a few others (game plays to 6 stars).

From gallery of XanderF

Of course, I'd mis-timed my expansion, and as time went by suddenly found myself at 5 stars - looking at what was easy to get for my 6th and realizing NOTHING was. I hadn't advanced ANY metric that could get me that. Focusing on buildings worked, particularly with a solid encounter (thank Polsky!) - ultimately one that was needed, given an irritating non-combat move that had the AI drop a mech on my mill with critically-needed resources. Most surprising take-away was the strength of knocking the AI 'character' to the mat - basically totally disabled several 'move' cards, giving me the win in the end...65 vs 61. (Oh, yeah, it was 61 v 61 before I scored the 'building bonus' tile. Talk about a close match!)

From gallery of XanderF

The thing that strikes me about this game is how much it feels like a story is being developed (yes, the music helps), how GORGEOUS it is (and yes, the official component upgrades help), and yet how quickly it plays (more or less) to get you that kind of arc. Such a favorite!

This evening I was interested in playing a couple of short games to chill out a little after a long day. After drawing the three cards for additional scoring possibilities, I decided to focus on the road loop formation. It seemed like an easy way to earn a good number of points. Turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. I think the cards were against me from the beginning.
From gallery of BunniCladwell
I earned 4 points and needed 29. I promptly gathered up the deck and shuffled for a second try. This time I drew the loop card again. I couldn't resist, but I promised myself to be more thoughtful in my card placements. I was thrilled to make one big loop of a road. However, I ignored the other two opportunities. This time I scored much better, but there is still room for improvement.
From gallery of BunniCladwell
I scored 32 points but needed 37. Perhaps it was the distraction of Madea on The Maury Show in the background, but I will attempt this game again soon and hope to have no further excuses as to why I failed.
I wish that I could remember that I can lay parts of cards on top of previously played cards. I know that by doing this I could potentially get larger areas of the same type. I enjoy the varying challenges this small game presents each time.
