Hi all

Like I posted in my previous Geeklist, I was out of boardgaming for quite a while and got back into it , especially wargames.

My father is now retired and is a huge history buff, especially WW2, so I thought I would try and entice him into wargames, It has taken a year, but I think I finally found the sweet spot

here we go in semi chronological order

I decided to try this one out first, he played through it, but he figured that the game seemed to be complicated for what it accomplishes, so we played maybe half a game of it, oh well, plenty of other games to try I think....

So I then ordered this one, as my father worked in the naval industry for almost 50 years.

We tried a game of it and played just one of the tactical scenarios , he actually won, but he thought it was too hard on the head with all the dice throwing.

SO I decide to re-evaluate the process and try turning him into a gamer first

I bought this and the 2 expansions, traders and builders, and inns and cathedrals, My mother really liked it, and so did he, lots of fun all around , so much so that I bought them the same games as a christmas present

How popular was it? they wore it out by march by playing 2-3 games a NIGHT! the tiles looked like they were thrown into a laundromat washer with poker chips to rough them up!

They had to stop playing though, as my mother was having freaky dreams about tiles and roads , really!

For christmas my wife bought me this one

we played 2 games ( my father that is) and he had some troubles with LOS and movement points, basically the whole wargame concepts

He loved the card driven aspect however and won both games we tried!

too fiddly though , plus by now he was hardcore into the carcassonne marathon

hmm, hexes , and a great gateway game allegedly

well this one is a fun game by all, but too fiddly and fragile with kids around, so we played this maybe 5-6 times, and I won most of them,

Dad " this is almost as much fun as carcassonne!"

Now Im getting frustrated, how can I be a wannabe grognard and my father is Euro mcgee!!

Ok so its got tiles and cash, the women all like it, bright colourful and non violent, my mom doesnt have weird picasso like dreams about it either, so we play this quite a bit, then my wife has our second baby

Now I am noticing that my parents are very avid gamers, and the concepts are less confusing to them, in fact games that frustrated them or befuddled them are now old hat and they are chiming in to help me teach them to new players!

This looks like fun as I look for a game to play with the kids that are now around, they all like planes, and they are 5+

however, a 5 year old does not like this as much as a 67 year old does!

this hits the table ( literally) quite a bit and my dad raves about it to my brother ( my main wargame partner btw ) so we get to play that on the floor while the wives make loser signs and laugh at us, hey we had a hoot so we paid no attention to it.

This is where things start to jump into high gear

I used to play lots of squad leader and the heavier games as a teen, Starfleet battles etc

Turns out my dad is busy a lot too ( 5 grandkids does that allegedly) I received this game off ebay in the spring for 20 bucks or so, I showed it to my dad *meh , why is it so cpmplicated*

Now in my defense I wasnt a fan either, but it looks like an old-skool hex and counter wargame with a CRT that either causes damage to either one side or the other.... how wrong I was.

Dad has been raving about a book he was reading about El Alamein, and I have been playing a lot of the Advanced squad leader starter kits 1, 2 and 3 so conversations have been about WW2 and what his father did in the war ( AA gunner and then Bren gunner in Belgium)

a week ago he pops by to baby sit, and I found this game in the basement as we were cleaning stuff up , " hey that looks neat, is that a map of N Afrika?"

me " yea its like carcassonne with Rommel..."

We played it yesterday and there is alot more depth to it than I expected , the step loss mechanic and the retreat results on the CRT make it quite exciting and tense to play. Played 2 turns of an intro scenario, but he really enjoyed it and is now clamoring for more.

I initially was against the *dry* old school wargames, but I forgot that I played them as a teen and progressed to now and things like LOS, MPs, CRT and ZOCs are second nature , but to him it was all brand new.
I eplained to him that the reasons I got into waragmes were:

I like WW2 history
I like numbers
I like maps
I like games that make you think

Now I hopefully have the hook set, and have convinced my father, my brother and a coworker to play in my self created wargame group, and now word has spread and another guy is interested too so we shall see what transpires.

It took a while , and I made a few mistakes along the way, but its great to spend time with my father after all these years of him working, and drinking a nice cup of tea and pushing cardboard around a map , even though I have to explain alot of things, the explanations are getting fewer and fewer

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far

Next up we will be trying this out using a quickstart scenario

I figured out the trick! If the topic is something he likes, its a LOT easier to teach the game system, plus I always have Afrika to fall back on......

Ok, after trying a few more ( about 15+ hours) of TBB , My wife asked me to either start playing all these games that show up in trades or retrade them

So.after last week playing a F2F game of SK1 with my grognard-in-training at work, I showed my father some of my ASL gear that I have accumulated

Beyond Valor 3rd ed ( just showed up last week) Pegasus Bridge and A Bridge Too Far, well being British, he got quite excited about the latter 2, so I talked him into trying ASLSK1

We played today and I got beat, then again I wasnt playing my A game *cough* and he was lucky with a snakeyes roll and 2 3s, but I never thoght in a 1000 years i would actually be playing ASL with my Dad , and now he has a weird compulsion, as we were playing he kept his nail clippers handy and was clipping the unclipped ones as we were going along! he offered to have me leave my gear over at his place so he can clip them , but I declined , as i told him Ill need help with BV that has 2600 of them.........

Tonight he is on his way over , as on the way home I grabbed 4 extra Plano containers from Wal-Mart , lets hope we can get in a game of Scenario 2!
