First game we picked up from Spiel that we got on the table, just finished our second game. Pick-up-and-delivery enginebuilder with dice drafting. Great! Gorgous graphics very fitting of the theme. Not very cutthroat with two, but that's fine for this type of game. Imagine it will get crowded with four and much more competitive. So far real happy with this.

Best 3 out of 5 marathon with my wife, a grade school teacher whose workplace is closed this week due to the Kinkade fire in Northern California.

Orleans plays quickly with two experienced players, downtime is minimal. Interesting decisions, including optimizing scoring with random draws from the worker bag.

We played this once before, at a regional con, after being interested in it for a month or two when we watched some videos. This was our first real game of Champions, now feeling more comfortable with the rules.

The setup took a little bit of time, but we jumped right in, and had fun. A claimed Svanhildr as her Viking, and I took Gylfir the Seafarer.
I took advantage of Gylfir's Merchant Ship items for free abillity, while A completely forgot about her extra hit of damage ability during the game. I was able to get off to a fast start, and kept that difference most of the game.

I really like the game, but she was less excited than the first time we played last month. Probably because her battles were less sucessful this go-round. The game is definitely more wide open at 2p than it would be at more players, but we don't mind that. Would love to play it with 3-4 players sometime, but that will be rarer than a 2p game for us. Will have to see if we can convince our third to learn this game sometime. Our third feels like it is a chore to have to learn a new game ("We should master a game first before we learn something new").

The previous play at the Con was a brand new copy of Champions in the borrowing library. This was our first copy, so we've now played two games of this, each on a brand new board, and punching out everything. I would imagine setup will finally get faster since the next play will be our first that isn't on a new board.

Jan surprised me this evening by announcing "Tea will be 30 minutes, fancy a game of Sausage Dice?" Those without their minds in the gutter will realise that this was an invitation to play a fun little dice game where, over 6 rounds, you roll and re-roll dice to score as many points as possible for each of the six types of animal - only scoring each type of animal once per game.

I fell for the lure of her invitation and, on my final turn, was left needing 7 points from weasels to win but ended up only scoring 4. Doh!

My sister-in-law came over last night, so we played some games.

We started off the night with 2 players of Photome's. This is an interesting coop where you're placing a bunch of 3D cardboard buildings that have various animals on them, trying to cover up some of them and make sure others are showing.

At the end of the game, each player takes a picture of the city and see if they meet the conditions on their card.

It's neat, but I think it would be better with more players.

Next up was Rice Dice.

My SiL got a really good engine going and won easily. This game's not bad, but after playing, I realize there's not going to be much difference between each game. In each game you'll have to water, plant and harvest, and there isn't a different strategy beyond that.

In the Clever games you can focus on a different area, in Imperial Settlers you can focus on drawing in buildings, or maxing each row, but here there's nothing.

So, I think this is going on the trade pile, I'm afraid.

Me and my fiancé are visiting my parents and decided it's the perfect opportunity to pop out a game and show them what we always talk about.

We played her favourite, a 2p game of Agricola. It was my first win against her, but she wqs more focused on getting the "cutest" farm while I was masterplanning my first win.

We both had a good time. Fun game.

We ended the evening with an an old favourite: The Tarot of the Black Cat.

This is a very simple memory game that anyone can play with a deck of cards numbered 1-22.

In a 2 player game, each player gets 8 cards, and you're trying to get the other player to discard their hand first. On your turn, you name a number. If your opponent has it, they discard it.

The rules aren't clear if you discard face up or down, so we play so that you discard face down, so you have to remember: the numbers you asked, the numbers that you had to discard, your opponent's discarded cards and your opponent's guesses.

I remember when we first played, we would just count up, but then it became obvious what cards you had in your hand. So then we would skip around, but that makes it difficult to remember what you've asked.

This last game, both of us purposely asked about cards already in our hands, to try and throw off the other!

I can't believe such a simple little game can have so many different strategies!

We played 5 times, and I only won once!

Looks like they're doing a reprint:
https://booth.pm/en/items/1650477

But I like my old, cartoony version best!

I bought this when it first came out and we have played it on an off about 50 times. We really like it and have played it with other couples but we both think it is best with 2 as it gets more random with more players.

It's a nice game. We don't care who wins. It is an abstract game for sure but has something unique about it. The only thing I don't like is the scoring track on each board. It would be much better to have a central one.

We played this at a board game café in Toulouse and liked it enough to buy it but it has sat on the shelf of "I bought too many games" for 2 years. Tonight I took the clingfilm off it.

We just played the basic rules to get into it before going for the Gods.

I won three times in a row. It's like 3D draughts and I played a lot of draughts a chess as a kid.

However, my wife did enjoy it. She likes to win and also games with simple rules but tough strategy. So she wants to play more.

I think it is nice little strategic non-luck game that is hugely overproduced but who cares. We're looking forward to playing a few more basic games before trying out the god-cards.

I have had this game for ages. At first we sort of liked it but found it a bit dry. Then last summer, based on all the posts on here, we gave it another go. We saw a new aspect to it and enjoyed the games but I always lost unless I gat I good starting hand.

We've played it on and off since then and I pulled it out tonight as a sort of antidote to winning Santorini 3/3. She beat be twice and not just by a few points. 100 to 20 and 60 to 32. That's crushing!

I just don't get this game. I understand the rules but have no idea how there is any strategy to it. It seems to be based purely on what cards you are dealt and draw. Grrr!

Played this for the second time and mixed up some of the tiles (although I used the standard layout of locations). Clearly we've worked it out a bit more since the scores have gone from the low hundreds to over 200 each.

It was very close but in the end S got to the top of two temple tracks and that ended up as the difference as she won 221-212. I think the high scores may have resulted from me occasionally forgetting to move the round marker on. I find I am terrible at that kind of housekeeping in a game.

I played this a couple of times before with a friend who pieced together the PnP version, and left it with me. Today, I played with my 11 year old son, who read the rules himself, and came to the table ready to play.

We lost, but oh, it was close.

In this one, through the collective efforts of characters like General Gumdrop, you bring the might of mints to Mintopia to alleviate the regional panic caused by villains such as Nick O'Teen, that remove mints, and instill panic.

In my son's words, he liked the game because it was quick, and the theme was fun.

From my perspective, having played the other two Mint games - this is the worst of them all. I get what they are trying to do, but I feel like every iteration is lesser than its predecessor. If the price was right, I'd buy Mint Works, and I'm happy enough to play someone else's copy of Mint Delivery, but I don't think I need to play Mint Cooperative again.

It's been quite a while since I posted on this list, but my wife and I are now finally living under the same roof again after work situations kept us in different states for 3 years. However, since we're crammed in a little 2-bedroom apartment with our oldest son while our new house is being built, most of the game collection is in storage. cry Most of what we have in the apartment are smaller-box games.

This was our first play of Bloom. It's a nice little filler roll & write. The strategy seems to only enter into it strongly in the latter part of the game as your options diminish and you're attempting to complete colors and fill in garden beds with the dice before you. Marking off fewer flowers than pips on the die or flowers of the wrong color results in unhappy customers, which are worth -1 point each at the end of the game. You have one opportunity to reroll the remaining dice during the game, but doing so costs you a point. The game ends when one player has completed three colors or four garden beds.

The game comes with five different garden bed layouts and suggests giving each player a random one. We played the same bed for our two games since two sheets had broken off the pad in manufacturing/shipping. My wife handily won the first game 33-26, while I won the second 27-23 despite taking 4 unhappy customers on my last turn since it let me complete a color and a garden bed.

Played two learning games of Sub Terra tonight and we loved it! Love the theme and the different caver powers. The spelunking theme is perfect for an exploration game and there's a lot of delicious tension at the end when the flashlight runs out and you're hoping for the right die rolls to stay alive and find the exit. The base game is also quite challenging! The first game we only managed to get 1/4 cavers out. The second game we did slightly better, with 2/4 cavers making it out of the cave.

Definitely looking forward to getting this one back to the table, next time hopefully with four players.

We've played Horrified several times already in November 2019. It works well as a 2-player game as it's fully cooperative, and we have tried it using varying character and monster counts. Our first game was 29th October, 2 characters vs the newbie monsters of Dracula and Creature from the Black Lagoon, this was an easy win. Then on 31st we played with 4 characters (2 each) against 3 monsters and thought we'd won it, but we were playing Wolf Man wrong! So we played another 3 games with 4 characters and 3 monsters and found it a bit too challenging. We reduced the monsters to 2 and the characters to 3 and found that the game was more challenging than our initial game but we weren't getting beaten to death as with 4 characters and 3 monsters. We recommend that 2 players share decision making across 3 characters and start off with 2 monsters and see how you go with that.

The game play is not complex. Your hero character each have 3-5 actions as they move around the board collecting the various items needed to foil and then defeat each monster. Each monster has unique requirements, either particular combinations of items, or an actual puzzle to solve. Once that first stage is complete, players will move to the monster's space with the required items and defeat the monster. Whilst this is going on, there are also villagers roaming about the board, and heroes can guide them to their destinations in order to receive 'perk' cards that can be used at any time during the 'hero phase' and these are very helpful and not to be underestimated in game play.

If you enjoy cooperative games, this one is very engaging and easy to catch on to. You can be playing it out of the box in about 15 minutes. A game lasts about 40-45 minutes.

We played a game of Takenoko and we addes the Chiblis expansion for the first time. We liked the everything in the expansion. The only thing we really didn't do was move the female panda to make babies. I tried to focus on a gardener heavy strategy whilehe mostly focused on tile laying and some panda poop cards. When we ended it looked like we were going to tie. Then I remembered he got the emperor card for triggering the last round. We really enjoy this game and I had a much better time at two than the last time we tried it.

We played our first "real" game Thursday night, having learned the rules well in a con session last month. My wife acted like she didn't enjoy it as much, but we played Saturday, and she admitted she had been thinking about the game for the last two days. She had some different ideas about how to approach placing her workers, and going about combat with the monsters.

We're both trying all the Viking roles. This time A played as Gylfir the Seafarer, and I was Ullr the Berserker. By the third round, A had broken away a bit, and was piling up food, gold and wood. I made a late charge, but the Blame crushed me in the end. I had forgotten that Blame accumulates sort of exponentially, and isn't just 1 Glory per token. I would have lost anyway, but it would have been closer.

Hope to play with 3-4 players at some point soon to make the board a little tighter, but we really enjoy the game anyway. Decided to make individual baggies with the worker meeples, score tracking discs, food, wood, etc., so that everything you need to start the game is in each player's bag. That will shave a few precious seconds off our setup time.

Picked up this expansion last week, and playing with the new villains, I settle on playing Dr Facilier.

It was a little confusing at first, as he has a "Fortune Pile" to build and draw from, and it took me a few minutes to figure out how it plays. "A" played Hades again to get a better feel for him. I got lucky, and drew the cards I needed, and played into my Fortune Pile quickly to win the game in about a half hour - perhaps the fastest one of us has won a game of Villainous. I definitely enjoy the Evil Queen the most in this set, but that is probably partially due to nostalgia.

Would love to see how this plays with more than two, but our third gave up on it after one play this summer. If you play against Facilier, we definitely recommend playing the Fate Deck as often as possible to build your opponent's Fortune Pile, and make it harder to draw the cards needed from the Pile to win the game.

24. Board Game: Horrified [Average Rating:7.90 Overall Rank:648]

Since Halloween was rescheduled in many towns in our area to Saturday night (due to bad weather on Thursday), a game of Horrified seemed appropriate.

We played against Wolfman, Invisible Man, and the Mummy. The sliding puzzle annoys me, but I figured that would be a fun challenge this time (our third usually does the Mummy puzzle if the Mummy is in the game). I had the Soul Stone, and the Hunted emblems, and was constantly harassed by those until they were defeated.

Playing with two heroes and three monsters is a good fit most of the time. Four monsters is pretty tough, but can be done if you aren't spending the entire game being harassed by the monsters. Still enjoying this one quite a bit, and it currently gets a bit more play than regular Pandemic.

25. Board Game: Architects of the West Kingdom [Average Rating:7.86 Overall Rank:82]
Played this 2 nights in a row. 2 players with the bot included.

First game, the bot and my wife crushed me. Second game (last night), the bot got absolutely destroyed (combination of now knowing how the AI works and not very good card draws). I still managed to lose to my wife by one point.

I've played 4 times and am at a zero percent win rate. It's still pretty fun and I'm looking forward to playing again.
