During a recent visit to a FLGS I finally bought a game I had heard a lot about
for a long time -RA. It is rather high up there in the BGG ratings, has a lot
of positive reviews and seemed to have interesting mechanics, that none of my
other board games had. So buy it I did, and I eagerly introduced it to our
game group as soon as possible. My wife didn't like it. "Just not very interesting",
she said. "No there is a lot of subtle strategy here.. lets play a few more".
"It's ok but lets play something else" said our friends. Nobody seemed to get excited.
Eventually even I was forced to admit something was missing. But what?

The thrill. The suspense. The agonizing wait while you watch your oponents play -
will they ruin your carefully laid plans? Will they invade that key territory?
Will they take that role you want? All of that is just missing here. I simply
cannot get excited by the "nerve racking" wait to see if someone draws, calls Ra
or trades a god.

So this list is all about those moments of thrill and anticipation that make up
the best board games. Add your own!

You cannot beat the suspense of waiting to see the results of the battle that will decide the control of North America. That great army you have in Brazil - it is not going to invade my Africa is it?? Sure, a dice fest, but what a ride.

Many moments here to savour. 10 cards in your hand. 2 cities there in the waiting. The dice roll - anything but a 7! Dope!!!
Also - you can snatch the longest road and win the game if the blue player just doesn't build the road to his puny village there..

All you need to get that city hall is the builders -1 price reduction. Now if only the player ahead of you gets tempted by the prospector with 3 doubloons on it..

This is my field. My great field. It is green, it is wide, it is MINE. But wait - what is that farmer doing next to that city at the edge of my field - surely they won't be able to merge them...

Your perfect plans are layed out, your armies amassed and your provinces set to build a perfect combination of buildings that will snatch you the leadership everywhere. Now if only gold comes before battle A in the action order, oh and you play first, oh and that darned church peace doesn't come up! Here we go...

Nothing is more suspenseful than trying to make a battle plan:
Picking the leader to risk and hoping he/she isn't the traitor; dialing in the number of troops that will be lost; selecting the hard-won weapons that may win you the battle or simply be lost when your leader dies.

So exciting!
