Great night for the games cafe - we had five new members walk off the street! This was due to advertising on a local events website, and putting up advertising fliers around the local polytechnic.

Most popular drink: Royal crown draft cola
Most popular food: Peanut slabs

Table one was run by Drew. He was itching to play Shadows again after our last nailbiting victory (all we had to do was get one more black sword to win, but did you think we could? We ended up fighting siege towers five times before we finally won).

Had two newbies playing - they enjoyed it but Drew did voice my frustration at this game - it is a pain to teach but fun to play. The knights won again, largely due to the absence of a traitor (we haven't yet played WITH the traitor due to teaching the game to several different groups of people).

The second game played at this table was Liar's dice which was greatly received by all. I taught the pickle variant to the group which immediately upped the fun factor.

Finally cracked out Memoir '44 at the Games Cafe. One of the new guys said that he had an interest in Risk-type games and so I thought that this would scratch the dice-rolling itch. Wasn't started until towards the end of the night, and several times came down to a single dice roll to finish the game. He loved it. My favourite moment of the night was when he picked up those fantastic DOW pieces, and a slow smile crept across his face like the dawning of a new day. New convert!

Richard, Adam and Sally started of with this classic. I'm guessing Richard won, but Adam at least suggested it which was a huge change for him.

This game came out after TTR (again, Adam's choice), and was as usual well-recieved.

Another DOW which is fun to play but a dog to teach. Fortunately, Richard took the honours here - much pirate talk, as well as discussion of whether there are any good ninja games around (suggestions?).

Finally, I put myself with the four others who had walked off the street. They said they liked word games, so I started with this one. Was unfortunately a real clanger (although they said it would make a fine drinking game). May not go down well as a drinking game in the church dining room!

After their dubious stares, I went on to what I'd always considered to be a real winner. After a couple of rounds of complaining about not being able to change their hands, they quickly got into the swing of things. One comment was "I never knew I could feel so involved in bean farming."

They finally settled on this game as a quick closer. I'm still impressed by how fun, and infuriatingly difficult, it can be to pass up a good deal. One of the girls made the suggestion that this could be used as a bargain hunting fashion game - change the numbers to clothing with different values, and each person gets the same amount to "spend". Scoring would revolve around having the most change, as well as buying clothes which colour co-ordinate ("runs" could be similarly coloured on the colour wheel). I thought it was an intriguing concept (may have to change the name of the game to "yes please")...

They left to get food after a couple of hands, but they were pretty keen to come back again.

All in all a really successful outreach night.
