Well, OK, maybe it is, but there’s a reason why it doesn’t FEEL the same as bidding at an estate sale.

Some of us admit a certain amount of anxiety with that particular process. In order to play the game maybe we need some kind of rationalization to get past it.

So pick a game with an auction and explain why it doesn’t FEEL* like the standard concept of an auction.

*[size=7] With tongue in cheek I once made the unqualified declaration that Ra was not an auction. Serious fans swiftly raced in to offer well meaning corrective education … because on the Internet no one can see your tongue. You can read all about it here: Don’t call it an Auction. I hate Auctions. I didn’t really know about the notification emails back then, I had no idea how quickly others would pounce to counter my nonsense.

Yeah, OK, let's start with the most obvious one first. Instead of an auction, bidding for tiles is just like shopping for bargains the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The big box retailers will have an amazing sale advertised on some amazing electronic gadget for some amazingly few of the first customers. How long are you willing to stand in line before the store opens to make sure you are one of them? Is it 13 hours, or 10 hours, or maybe 6 hours ?

Or maybe it isn't such a popular item, and the discount is smaller and you don't need to start so early. Can you get by with 9 hours, or 7 hour, or just 2 hours ?

Pick one. Auction anxiety gone.

The cards are dealt out at the start of the game in a properly random manner. But you're not stuck with a random car selection, you get to CHOOSE. You can be in charge of your own destiny by bidding (oops) for the one that matches the colors in your hand. Focus on color matching and the anxiety that is usually the product of auctions just doesn't come to mind.

Remember that, there is finite universe of cards. You know that if you have lots of good cards in one color then your opponents are unlikely to be strong there, also, and they will leave you alone. Auction anxiety gone.

A hand with no obvious strong suit ? Then just bid in the middle range to get whatever the others don't want. You don't have to care. PROFIT wins the game, not necessarily the finish order.

When it comes to bidding on a tile set in one of the quarries, there really isn't much agony. To begin with, you might have only 3 or 4 money cards in your hand anyway. If it's three cards all in different colors, then you really only have one bid and you're done. Auction anxiety gone.

Maybe you have two cards of the same color, but they are a 3 and a 7. That's a big jump to take, pretty easy to decide. It is not like a regular auction where they emotionally suck you further along each time in one-dollar-at-a-time increments. Auction anxiety ? well, reduced, anyway.

This doesn't feel like an auction because I wouldn't hang any of this art in my home. If I don't win a certain painting in Modern Art, its no big deal. At worst, I don't win the game. But, if I lose an auction on E-Bay at the last second by a sniper for something I want, THAT's a big deal.
