We kicked off the month of December with 2 weekend plays of Qwixx, splitting the victories 70-54, and 50 - 80.

I felt like maybe my spouse needed more coffee before playing anything today, because she made all kinds of mistakes - too many, considering our play tally for this game is nearing 50.

After losing the last several games of Champions to my wife, I finally pulled out a victory, and became the new Jarl (for now). I went after the monsters aggressively, and was able to get much glory early on, and held her off. Even with only 2 players, I still felt like I didn't have all the options I wanted, but one of these days we will get to play with 3-4 players, and feel the tightness of selecting worker placements.

The Valhalla expansion has been purchased, but was wrapped for Christmas. Looking forward to that one.

Wife and I got to play a game together. Daughter getting old enough now to keep herself occupied as long as we're near! I ran a better tavern than did my wife, attracting a higher quality of clientele. I win 70 to 54. Enjoyed this Warsch as much as his others. What a start to his career!

We've played last night for 4 hours Chapter 2 (til 2 AM so on 1st of Dec.) and haven't finished it yet. Great game! I like the combat and diplomacy card play and I hope that it won't become repetitive. I really love the story until now and the puzzles too. Actually we don't know yet how to solve one of them. We were too tired to finish the chapter. Also good character progression, not too slow, not too fast.

What's your favourite "good for 2" board game that you received as a gift?
Last year Shadows of Brimstone. I've played it all the year mostly solo and 2 player just a few times. I play with 2 heroes and my husband joins me when he likes.

What "good for 2" board games have you given as a gift?
Tainted Grail cause I found the Kickstarter ad.

What "good for 2" board games are you hoping to receive as gifts during the holidays this year?
7th Continent (already wrapped for Christmas) and Too Many Bones (on the way). Looking forward to playing them.

You know you are a board game addict when the only Black Friday shopping you do is at the local board gaming cafe and all of the board game stores in your city. Here is a pic of this years Black Friday haul:

From gallery of Omahavice

Everything ended up being 60% off so I feel I got a pretty good deal. I have wanted an extra map pack for Concordia for a long time so I was thrilled to see one sitting on the the sale table. There was also a copy of Trajan which my gf absolutely loves but we always thought it was just too pricey at MSRP. Guess which game we played first when I brought the games home?

I let her pick from the new games and she of course picked Trajan. This is a very good Stephen Feld point salad with several different ways to score and win.

From gallery of Omahavice

She kicked my butt 124 - 111. This game plays very smooth with just 2-players and it took us about 90 minutes to finish. Happy to get this game in our collection.

In tonight's board gaming, we played 2 games and each of us won a decisive victory.

This was my victory, I scored 53 to my husband's 27 on this dice drafting game. I won because of the combined values on my yellow dice (my secret objective card), I also picked a window that required a lot of yellow and we rolled a lot of yellow. My husband's secret objective card (red dice) did not come up as often in the dice pool.

After playing this game yesterday with incorrect rules (we thought the hand limit was smaller than it was), we played the game with the correct rules tonight. (Although you begin with 3 cards, the hand limit is 8 until you acquire baskets which increase it by 2 for each basket.)

We liked the game today much better and would play it again. My husband kept grabbing the night cards which are double the value of the day cards. He won, 42 to my score of 23.

It's a nice set collection game for 2 only and it's a keeper for us.

I'm not usually impressed with the card or dice games that come after an actual game. They're often like movie sequels, but just like movie sequels, sometimes they're good. This is one of those sequels.

It's Castles of Burgundy without the time commitment or tiles. It plays pretty quickly, about 30 minutes. The cards are used for both dice and all of the colored tiles that would normally be on a CoB player map. Best of all, it's small, so very portable. (although it's a table hog...)

Played 2 games, & lost both of them. Still, much fun was had. I'd play this most any time.

Because this had animals in it, we used it for the Advent Challenge. Cows, pigs, sheep, chickens....all in the stable, I'm sure.

Then we played 2 rounds of this with some of the expansion. We used the 4th temple both times, not wanting to add too much in as it's been a while since we played.

We do love this game! We're thinking about leaving it out on the table so we can play it over lunch on a day. Or two.

This also counted on the Dicember challenge!

My wife picked out a couple games for us to play together during our little one's naptime including Splendor. This gave me a chance to try out the neoprene playmat I received in the mail the other day. The mat added a nice aesthetic and also made it much easier to grab cards from the table. Our first game was a close one, 12-12 until my final turn where I was able to grab a 4 point card to win 16-12 before my wife could pull off her final move. We set back up and had a quick match where everything seemed to go right for me and I grabbed a 17-9 victory. My wife was determined to win so she insisted we set up for a third play. This time she got a nice engine going and grabbed her 15th point while I was only at 11.

Next we set up San Juan which just hasn't gotten as many plays this year as it deserves. It quickly became one of our 10x10 games last year after instantly falling in love with the game. I think the only thing it has going against it is the bland theme/color scheme. There isn't anything particularly exciting about the game outside of the gameplay itself to get it off the shelf. Everytime we do get it out we quickly remember how great this game really is. Our first play was probably our highest scoring game yet, 53-45. I thought my wife would win after tucking a ridiculous number of cards under her bank and chapel but I managed to build two 6-cost buildings that gave me the edge I needed. In play two I set up an engine that made this our quickest game to date. I put out my 12th building before she could get much of anything going and won 27-19.

This is one of my husband's favourite games. I like it but don't love it. I won the first, and he won the last 2, so overall he won. He always hoards all the high value cards (red, yellow, blue) and it serves him well lol.

Note - we have a 6 month old baby, so anytime we can play a game is time well spent =)

now on to our thoughts...

I bought it, my wife agreed to play with me

I ended up winning our 1st game; i got a lucky 1st hand that included a farm, husband, and wife; this makes sense if you've played he game before.

I played this once prior to today. My play was solo so i could get familiar with the rules.

We both thought this played well at 2 players. We didn't think we were missing anything exciting by not playing with a 3rd or 4th player.

We both liked the art work. I'd say it's some of the best I've seen as far as a complementing theme.

I'd say the game play is a little lite. You have choices, but choice 1 tends to be far better than choice 2 or 3. That said we want to play it at least 3 or 4 more times before passing final judgement. o

After 1st play though, we'd say... 'it was ok, luke ok, mphf ok, i guess we'd play it again because we hate to shun a game after only one play'

We're curious what other couples think?

We started off the month with another play of Takenoko. Both of us and our youngest daughter have head colds. This game was picked today as it plays quickly and is not too thinky. We mostly wanted to spend time together has we’d been going in opposite directions all weekend. This game fit the bill.

I finally won, but it was close 30-27. I love the components of this game and the Pandas are adorable.

After spending the week playing games with various friends and hosting an all day gaming event in our home, it was nice to get a 2-player game in with my favorite person. Daniel received this game as a gift recently, and we were super excited to try it out.
It’s a cooperative card game which isn’t necessarily our thing, but it’s Marvel themed so we were excited about that! In the base game, you choose one of five heroes from the Marvel universe and work together to defeat a selected villain. All of this is done using individual decks of cards for each character, including the auto-controlled villain. I played as my favorite hero, Captain Marvel, and Daniel got to be Spider-Man. After a loss in our learning game, we successfully stopped Rhino from completing his break in scheme on our second try.
We both thought Marvel Champions was a lot of fun, and we can’t wait to play it again tomorrow!

After I took a beating in Trajan, Terri was nice enough to say "do you want to play a game of Concordia with one of your new maps?" I was already smiling and tearing off the shrink wrap. I quickly read the one page of rules and decided we would try the Creta side of the map. Talk about a nice, tight map for 2-players. There is one province called Gavdos that is an island and only has the one city on the entire province but when you play the Prefect card you can choose any of the resources to use at the bonus tile. Whenever you play Prefect and take all the coins, you get 2 extra coins before you flip all the bonus tiles back to the resource side.

From gallery of Omahavice

I used Senator early and often and was also able to get the last personality card on the track to win the Concordia card. I got revenge for the bad loss in Trajan and won this game 129 - 99. This looks like a pretty fun map pack and I'm anxious to try out the AEGYPTUS map. For those of you that play Concordia and have any of the extra map packs, which is your favorite and why?

We are attempting the Advent Challenge again this year. We tried a couple of years ago and got to about day 15.

It is already not doing so well this year.
Day 1 was play a game featuring animals, and we ended up with Memory as our set features animals on all the cards. Well except for the one with a snowman on it. We were expecting this as we hard a long hard drive (about 8 hours) and knew we would be too tired to tackle anything with teeth.

Day 2 was play something where you learn. We had higher hopes as a quiet day was planned. Well it got to the end of the day and we still hadn't attempted a game (Wingspan or even any game on the Shelf of Shame were contenders) so we settled for Codenames as you attempt to learn the identities of all the agents on the board. We played two games in the space of about half an hour. We won the first handily with two agents to spare (9/9), but the second got down to sudden death, and I accidentally gave away the identity of my last agent. soblue

Day three is to feature landforms. I am voting for Scythe, but I suspect we will end up with one of the TtRfranchise, or perhaps Wingspan

We're also doing the advent challenge, so this was our game with manger-ish animals.

We really enjoy this one with 2 players as neither of us are very prone to Analysis Paralysis and we have the setup and round refresh motions down pat. Typically we play this in about 30-40 min. including set up and tear down. There's not a lot of down time and we find the use of dice to select actions very interesting.

I'm torn on the new version - it seems garish to me, but the lure of having All The Expansions is very tempting.

This is another up-to-four game that we enjoy at two. The way it scales up and down with the number of exits for each player works very well. It's a nice, light path-maker that is lovely to look at.

Yesterday we got a chance to play a game of this two-handed instead of with the two neutral boards. We liked it WAAAAAAY better. This game really feels like it was designed as a full four player game. With four characters on the board (and the aid of their attendant powers), the game just sings. Though in general things can spin out of control in this game very quickly if you aren't careful, it was definitely easier insofar as we had more room to maneuver and more options to consider. I can't imagine we'll ever go back to playing with only two characters.

This game is quickly skyrocketing into my favorite games. Were it not for Clank! Legacy, I'd have to give it my Best of the Month for November.

Though it's quite difficult, the design is super streamlined. The game just hums along, leaving players with minimal downtime and an escalating sense of tension as you try to figure out how best to deal with the oncoming hoards. Highly recommended for lovers of difficult co-ops!

My buddy and I met for games Sunday morning. We started with this one. I was slow to sell goods from my factories so I missed out on some round 1 and round 2 points. It's a very fun game, and we both enjoy it. My friend won, 202-183.

Next up was this. Very quick game, simple actions, but also has good decisions. I started with 3 upgraded wedges and was able to put out all my castles and score for 2 of the 3 enemies at the end.

I won, 109-73.

For our last game, we played Akrotiri, which neither of us had played before. It was a lot thinkier than we anticipated, with placing the tiles but then not being able to get to the islands right away. Needed to keep the map cards oriented top-up added another challenge. All in all a good game.

I won, 23-20.
