Escape Winter Con 2020 Scheduling & Gamer Meetup List
for Boardgames, Wargames, Teaching Games (and other big'uns)

Feb 21 - 23rd - Wyndham Resort International Drive - Buena Vista, FL

A new gaming convention tradition launches this year! I hope this list is helpful for your scheduling needs!!

Official Events Schedule:
https://tabletop.events/conventions/escape-winter-con-2020/s...=

Facebook Group:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/184114715004724/

Why this List?

This list is to encourage attendees to post & schedule heavier games that they would like to organize prior to arriving at the Con. Due to the nature of Open Gaming conventions, the ability to get meatier games to the table is always a challenge. Often due to the dynamic nature of the attendees, formal schedule, etc. For most Euro strategy games, pick-up sessions are quite easy at an open gaming convention. But by starting this list a few months in advance, players can start reviewing rules, assign players to specific countries/characters/etc.

This list should be used to post open games that require a larger block of time (3-5+ hours) **These are not for OFFICIAL events and games that will be listed on the Escape Winter Con Schedule .

Got a meaty GMT wargame or an old Avalon Hill game that you've been dying to have hit the table? How about the game of Die Macher or Mega Civilization you've always wanted to try? What about a game of Fiasco? This list is for you!

Please also use this list to coordinate informal teaching/learning games for newbies.

Organization of the Geeklist

The games are listed in ALPHABETICAL order so that you can scroll down the list and see if a game you want to play is being organized or not. If it is, you can post a comment showing your interest. If it's not, you can Add an Item and put a game on the list.

It is also usually a good idea to Subscribe to the specific games you are interested in playing, rather than the entire list. This way, you will be notified only when there is a post to the specific games you want, rather than all games and comments.

For particularly organization-heavy games in which players, roles, and other stuff must be handled prior to the con, it might be good to have several entries of a game.

How to Post

Some useful information to include in game listings:

Game Title (added via the Geeklist Item)
# of Players
Day/Time/Location to Meet (This will likely be 'TBD' until we get closer to the Con)
Expected Playing Time (Duration)
Requested Experience Level of Players (i.e. "Newbie-friendly", "Experts wanted", etc.)

Room Locations

I encourage you to indicate a room and the meeting time. Once official Con areas are designated, I'll update with floorplans and meeting rooms.

The generic meeting space of the hotel is here:

https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/content/dam/property-assets/en...

Mules

If you are willing to bring a copy of a needed game, please do! Many of the games on this list may be scarce, or not a typical title for the Con library. Obviously, older titles may require a Mule. If you are a local wargamer, or travelling by car to Orlando, supplies such as plexiglass, extra dice, dice towers, are greatly appreciated. The die-hard Grognards probably have their own tweezers. laugh

Requesting a Game

If you aren't planning to host a specific game, but would like to help get it organized, please REPLY in the comments section your request for playing a certain game. You should have pretty good success getting someone willing to set up a game if there is enough interest for that particular title.

I've set up a Escape Winter Gaming Convention Attendees guild for you to browse other attendees' collections. Join this guild and you can request games for other folks to bring.

Here is the current Escape Winter Con Game Library

Synopsis:
18Africa is an 18XX game with the African continent as its setting. The game uses 1829 Mainline as its inspiration and has enhanced the gameplay to reduce some of the luck factor of the original game.

The game has 17 companies but a random selection of 9 are used in each game resulting in a different game each time that you play.

The game follows the usual 18XX convention of a series of share dealing rounds followed by a number of operating rounds.

Differences from a standard 18XX include 7 concessions which are auctioned prior to the second SDR and a variable financial market when companies operate.

Synopsis:
18OE: On the Rails of the Orient Express is a monster 18XX game covering entire European continent. There are five types of companies - Private, Minor, Regional, Major, and National.

As in every 18XX game players invest in railway companies by buying stock, with the majority stock holder of each company deciding how the company acts on the game board. Depending on companies' actions value of stock changes, and players might receive dividends for stock held. The winner is the person with most money after adding the value of his stock holdings.

This game is notable for its size, that is rivaled only by 18C2C. The focus of the game is making the Orient Express run - having a train travel from one of the western capital cities to Constantinople.

Viking players either play as Norsemen Viking freeman or as the fearless Viking shock troops known as Berserkers. The English play as the Housecarl, the Kings’ household troops, or as the Thegns who were regional noble Leaders. Experience: No experience necessary.

I'm hoping to recruit local ASL players. This is just a short one hour session to show some very basics to anybody who wants to see how this game works and see if they are interested.

Advanced Squad Leader is the current popular version of Squad Leader (1977) which I owned and played way back then. There are many active ASL tournaments and VASSAL players (which I use often). However there are very few players around Central Florida so I am recruiting.

I can teach you the basic Infantry rules and these are really easy to learn. However.....once you dive into the various Vehicles, Support Weapons, Guns, Stukas, ad infinitum........it is the most complex game you can possibly play. By far. The beauty of the game is that you only have to learn the rules for the stuff in your hands so the learning experience is layered over time. This is definitely not a game for most people.

Note: We can optionally include Barrage: The Leeghwater Project.

This game is considered to be a bit complicated, we've found that the game time is significantly reduced when all players are familiar with the rules and game play. As such, please take a moment to watch a video to become familiar with the game prior to the event. Thank you.

How to Play

I listed this because people from the FB page had been chattering about playing Barrage and I noticed it wasn't scheduled here. After I listed it, the chattering seemed to stop. I guess people preferred talking about playing more than committing to playing. That's fine.

I would just try to re-schedule, but we are attending the con with some friends and I'm trying to purposefully keep my schedule clear so we can "play it by ear" more. While there are surely mental health best practices for dealing with such chaos, I probably won't be following them and will be the guy wandering the gaming library having a seizure because "this wasn't planned." (I can't help it...)

Just got my Halflings in today, so I have all the races now, and am looking to do a 4 player game. Each "forgotten folk" changes the rules of Caverna, making the game play a little differently. The game can take 3 hours to play the first time with the new rule sets as you learn the variations, but I have a couple of ways of getting a quick start.

Best for those who have played Caverna, or at least have played Agricola as a lot of similar concepts are used.

I'd like an 8 player game going, if we can! I have everything currently available for the game. Random draw of Old Ones, and more than happy to throw some Neutral horrors and side monsters into the mix.

Players:
1. Me
2. Jim
3. Jimmy
4. Brendan
5. Steven
6. Eliseo
7. Steve
8. Onnalee

Date/Time: Saturday night, shooting for 7pm, if that doesn't work for you let me know in the comments. Will be in the main Salon, I'm thinking somewhere in the back because the 6-8 player map is huge and will probably require two tables pushed together. I'll probably start setting up around 6:30, so I shouldn't be hard to find; not a lot of Cthulhu Wars going on, look for a big bald guy in a Kingdom Death shirt with a huge grey plastic tote full of Lovecraftian horrors.

Expected Playing Time: Last DTC, our game was 7 people, and it lasted 2-3 hours.

Requested Experience Level of Players: This one is hard to say. Definitely willing to teach. The game is rules-simple, strategy deep. Any newbie can learn the basic rules of the game, but from there it becomes learning your Old One and your spellbooks and formulating a strategy around them. That I cannot teach.

Become a 1940's L.A. detective picking the seedy chewed bubblegum off of the soles of society. This is a competitive narrative where multiple detectives search to solve an unspeakable crime. The one difference is that there is a human player, known as "The Chisel" who controls the people you interview, and sometimes you might not get the answers you are expecting.

If someone else who is experienced wants to play as 'The Chisel' (the game master), just let me know. Also, if everyone wants to play are specific/more difficult scenario, also let me know.

Great Co-op game with the Movie Monsters from the 50s/60s.

Horrified includes high-quality sculpted miniatures (Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon). Its innovative, easy-to-learn, cooperative gameplay has players working together against the monsters with varying levels of difficulty. Just as each monster is unique, they require different strategies and tactics to be defeated.
