There have been a couple of posts from people looking to hook up with other gamers. They were starting to sound desperate. So I said to my self, “Hey Self, let’s make a list!”

Feel free to add any other suggestions you might have.

(Also, this is my first GeekList. Be kind.)

Call up anyone you can think of.

When you are desperate, reach into the dregs of your memory and dig up everyone you ever played a game with. Who knows, you may find a kindred soul.

"Hey Jack, yeah I know it's been a while, like twelve years, say are you still into those board games we used to play?"

"Hello my sister's friend's boyfriend's brother, what to play Settlers?"

I have heard it said that you know everyone on the earth through no more than seven relationships. In other words, use who you know! If you don't have gamer friends, someone does. Ask your friends/family/co-worker/whoever who don't like games, if they have any friends that do like games, even if they consider them to be weird. If you don't have gamer friends, use other people's friends!

Turn people to the dark side.

If you have friends who are not game geeks, turn them into geeks! Find some 'tame' games, and draw them in, slowly but surely. You might ask yourself, is suffering through three months of Risk and Phase 10 worth it? That is a question only you can answer.

Find your local gaming store.

Sometimes local stores have gaming groups you can join. "Sweet! Problem Solved!" Other times they can give you information on local gaming groups. Or you can tell them you want to start one, and if they are nice they might offer you their space to use on a certain night of the week.

As a last ditch effort, you can lurk in the isles and try to scope out prospective new members. If you do that though, be careful not to get your self thrown out and banned from the premises. That sort of defeats the purpose.

Go to Conventions.

Find out about your local, or not so local, gaming conventions. Then attend them. Find people from your area, and make friends. If you have trouble making friends, get therapy, I can't help you.

Make technology work for you.

There are several blogs and websites designed for people looking for other people in their area. No, I am not talking about dating. Here on BGG there are the area forums you can use to shout out to people in your area, try not to sound too desperate. There are also other sites that you can use. I don't know what they are, but you are resourceful, go find them. Or if anyone wants to be nice and post them here, that would be useful as well.

Beg

Lastly, find someone you think is in your area here on BGG, and beg to play with them. Who knows, after their initial repulsion they might even say yes.

Game at work during lunch.

If you have a public meeting/dining area, just setting up a game with one other participant will often draw a crowd, and within that crowd you will often find another couple of willing participants. This can often expand into an evening gaming group for longer games. If you work at a cool company, they may not even mind you using their space so you don't have to stress too much about who's hosting.

Move to the greater Denver Colorado area

There are a ton of gamers and game groups here in the Colorado between Colorado Springs and Ft. Collins. You could play in a different game group every night of the week if you had the time. We also have one online game store and at least a half dozen really nice brick and mortar game stores covering the area as well. It's a great place to be a gamer!

For a slightly more useful suggestion you could look at the game group wiki here on BGG for links to local game groups all over the world:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/Game_Clubs

YIKES!!!!!

Anyone know what happened to the entire Western US game group section of the wiki?????

[it's back now]

You could always play online. Days of Wonder has online versions of their games. BSW has a bunch as well. There are also a lot of other online versions of games you'll find here on BGG. I thought there was a nice GeekList which listed a bunch of these as well. I have next to no experience with online play so I can't give specifics but I'm sure someone else will chime in with more details.
