MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

You've all been very patient waiting for me to finish this but it's finally here! I've worked late into the night quite a few times in the past two weeks, munching on Christmas cookies and Hot Chocolate to complete this Geeklist before you! It's been a labor of love for sure, but now it's time to deliver!

I'd like to thank you for all the wonderful entries that you made in this year's contest. I was really touched by your comments and support. This is the biggest number of entrants I've had yet and I'm really glad I started this so much earlier this year.

The spirit of Christmas is evident in every post you'll see below and I hope you'll read all of the entries/replies to see what I mean.

I've made it easier to reply to your individual entry by making this year's Winner's announcement a Geeklist and not a Forum post like in the past. I think the Forum post works best for the first part of the contest where the guesses are made, but a Geeklist works better for the replies.

One thing that is NEW this year is that I have secured a free Microbadge for all the participants (Thanks Aldie!) to show that you were part of the fun and magic! I'll be sending I've already sent Aldie a list of all the usernames from the original forum post and once he get's time, he'll send us the badges!

Here is the image I'll be using:

Here is the microbadge itself:

UPDATE 12-17-2007
You should all have your FREE microbadge already. If you get a chance, be sure to thank Aldie for the badge! If you didn't yet recieve it send ME and email so I can verify you were a participant and then send Aldie an email.

Thanks again for all the fun!

Your patience has been greatly appreciated. I received several emails wondering either if I was alright or if they had missed the results of the contest. I hadn't realized how much more I was writing per person for this years contest until I went back and saw some of the past contests and how this year's replies were generally much longer.

My family of Elves wants to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Remember to pass the Christmas spirit on to those in need of some Holiday Cheer and you'll feel great!

And finally... a little more Christmas music courtesy of YouTube:

My merry christmas answer is: Runebound 2nd edition.

Why? Because I really like the game but I don't own it. I would really like to be in the possition of having to grouch about how many expansions are out and having to buy them all.

Side note:
I actually wanted to put down a Mississippi Queen: The Black Rose as my guess, But I didn't think you would be giving away an expansion as the gift.

Thanks for the game!

Larry, Merry Christmas my friend!

You are the first to take a guess and that is quite exciting indeed! I've played Runebound a few times and have had a lot of fun with it. I'm sorry to say it's not the game I selected this year! But, that's a minor point compared to what I want to ask you. Looking at your interests, I see that you have "Horology" as a Hobby. I have to be honest, I have no idea what that is! Care to elaborate a little bit for all of us?!

Better luck next year and thanks for playing!

Jason

An excellent guess! The problem is that MY kids would be very unhappy if I gave away my PitchCar (actually I own the Carabande stuff!). It is a great game and it always gets set up for the holidays to get the rest of the family into games that they might not try. How old is your son? Looking at your collection, I think you REALLY need to get some Heroscape for him this year. It's a great game for the kids and there is enough "meat" there for adults too. He'd have a lot of fun building cool layouts with his Dad too - something that he'll remember for years to come!

Hope you and your family have a great Christmas Jason!

Hmm. I'll guess Attika.

My reasoning: You want to introduce others to good games (which is why you limited the initial selection to seven and up), and this is one
you like a lot, but which has started to wear a little thin for you (so you're less likely to miss it than you might be with, say, Man O' War), and which is replaceable at a reasonable rate (again, unlike Man O' War).

Plus, it sounds like a fun game, and one I wouldn't mind finding under my tree. :-)

Aha! A dectective! Let's see here...You are correct in the deduction that I want to introduce others to good games...so no 6's this year.

Attika IS a great game so that makes it a reasonable guess...Now your powers of deduction are off just a little here as Attika isn't really wearing thin at this time, it's just that it is settling into it's 'comfort' rating I think. However you are correct in thinking it could be easily replaced if I ended up missing it too much. Is it Attika? By jove Watson, I think you are...incorrect! Even though my rating dropped a little bit, it was still one of my most played gamed this year. Sorry Adam!

I can tell you are a descent fellow and we would be great Geekbuddies Adam. I'm basing that on your rating of FLUXX - a much maligned game at BGG, but one that I really have fun with.

It's no mystery I've added you as a Geekbuddy.

Merry Christmas!

Dear Manowar,

Thank you for doing this contest. This is my first year to participate and I am amazed that you not only give away a game but also take the
time to go and respond personally to everyone who submits a guess. I went and read carefully over your prior contests and I?m pretty sure I know that the game is Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game (US).

I say this because last year you said it was on your short list but your wife vetoed it. However, being always on the lookout for a good bargain and present for your amazing wife you?ve recently acquired a brand new copy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game (US). You decided this is a great chance to play a little joke on your wife and spread Buffy joy to another BGG member at the same time. The plot is afoot....

You casually mention to your wife that you are going to give away Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game (US) this year. She is upset and distraught but you will not be swayed like you were last year. You use all of your favorite excuses, ?Willow was really the brains of the operation anyway, it should be called Willow? and ?I need to make room for Last Night on Earth Zombie Game which I know you?ll love even more.? Meanwhile, a brand new copy of Buffy is waiting for her wrapped up under the tree!

You spread super Christmas joy by giving her a brand new copy of Buffy and sending your old copy to me! Thanks!

Seriously, I think we would have been a good geek buddy match when you were in your early years, but you?ve moved on while I?m suck in the 1970s! All the same you are a class act and thank you again for doing this.

Happy Christmas!

From one Scott to another, Merry Christmas!

I'm impressed with the amount of effort and thought you took to come up with an answer! Buffy was again considered as THE game for this year's contest. It didn't make the cut however which leaves it as a definate possibility again for next year. I'll be looking for your guess again next time Scott.

Now, what's this I see about us being good Geekbuddies in the past, but no longer? I still enjoy a good wargame - it's finding the opponents that is hard! Even in my gaming group, there is a tendancy to "play to the size of the group" as opposed to breaking off into smaller groups to play something like Bismark or Gettysburg. I'm actually envious of your rating of a 10 for World in Flames. One of my gaming fantasies is after winning the lottery I build a home with a multi-roomed gaming area so several large games can be set-up and left in a safe room where no feline activity can disrupt them! Either you have a room like that or you have no cats! World in Flames makes me drool. I've got another Geekbuddy now.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Thanks Scott! I look forward to this every year.

I gazed into my Magic 8 Ball, and all it said was "Reply hazy" ... and then I thought about haze, and where haze is common, and that made me think of cities, but not any cities, just really honkin' big cities with high building density, and that of course made me think of New York City, . . . so taking my Magic 8 Ball's advice, I'm going to guess Manhattan. Why? Because a new edition is out, and you're going to replace your older edition with the newer one. Or you're going to buy the newer one, decide the older edition is better, and pass it along.

Or maybe not . . . but that's my guess anyway.

*Gazes into my glass jar of dice*

Drew... I see that your insight is very umm...insightful. I HAVE thought along exactly the lines you mentioned. I had heard that another version of Manhattan was coming out (or is it out already?). I did consider Manhattan as the game to give away this year. I've just been waiting to see this new version before getting rid of the one I own! I'm sorry now that I did not pick it for this year's contest.

Looking at your 5 games rated a 10, I'm really intrigued by your comments for In the Shadow of the Emperor. Somehow this game completely escaped my notice a few years back and now I'm very curious to see what it's all about. It seems to be a game I'd most likely enjoy a lot too based on your comments. I WILL investigate this one further!

I also have rectified the fact that you were not a Geekbuddy for some strange reason as I always read your posts and enjoy your comments.

Merry Christmas Drew!

Merry Christmas, Scott! This is a highlight of the season on BGG.

My guess for this year's game is San Marco.

You rate it an 8.5, so it's comfortably in the giveaway territory. Your comments talk about how much you enjoyed it when you were given it for Christmas, but they are not as detailed as your comments on other games - suggesting that maybe it didn't get the ongoing play that you expected it to.

That is very kind of you to say Melissa! I enjoy running this "contest" very much - mainly due to all the wonderful people that stop by and say hi - like you. Thanks for making my enjoyment of this contest that much better.

San Marco huh? San Marco. Saaaaan Marco. It's been like...forever since I played that. It's a pretty good game if my rating is to be believed too. I really should play it again before I just abandon it altogether. You know where I'm heading with this... I'm sorry to say that was not it, but I'm glad you gave it a go.

Your Hot 10 gave me a good laugh by the way. In case it's already been changed, Melissa had the following Hot 10 on the day she posted this:

#1: Agricola
#2: Agricola
#3: Agricola
#4: Notre Dame
#5: Agricola
#6: Agricola
#7: Agricola
#8: Pillars of the Earth
#9: Gheos
#10: Scepter of Zavandor

Ok. I have to ask. why is Notre Dame stuck in between all those Agricola's? LOL. I'm very curious as to the reasoning.

Regardless of the reason, tis the best time of the Season...

Merry Christmas Melissa, I hope you get to go to Essen this year.

CJ, I notice that you have 38 games rated a 10! Now, that's what I call a gamer! You have a good selection of game in there and I'm curious what 5 games you would pick (and why) if you were to make them an 11. Just 5. Can you do it?

I added you as a Geekbuddy - I will be contacting you in the future regarding Bean Trader - one of your 10's...but a game where the endgame has me puzzled!

Jerry took a guess with something to warm the insides on a cold prehistoric night. I do enjoy a good thick soup on cold winter days. Or a beef stew! yes! ...with lots of veggies and plenty of broth. Then you get a few thick chunks of bread and slather on the butter and...wait a minute, I'm stalling. I'm sorry to leave you in the cold Jeremy - no Soup for you! (sorry I couldn't resist).

Jeremy is the opposite type of game rater than CJ was. Jeremy had NO games rated a 10 and only 2 rated a 9! High standards indeed! I was very pleasantly surprised however to see that you have two fantastic games as your 9's... Railroad Tycoon (a 10 for me), and Twilight Struggle (something I've been wanting to play/get since it came out but have not yet done so).

RRT IS truly a great game and I agree with your comments Jeremy - it's too bad that Eagle went under. Since you enjoy it so much, Go download my two RRT Event Decks and see what you think of them. They are easily customized to tweak the game however you want. I think you'd enjoy them alot - think of them as my Christmas present to you instead of Soup!

Have a great Christmas!

MODERN ART

Thanks for another shot, this is a Christmas tradition that I always look forward to. Hope you have a great Holiday Season!

Ah yes, my detailed rating guide. Lovely to look at, a pain to make! LOL! Bob, you have a great method for deducing the game I picked. You may be surprised to find out (eventually) that you really were on to something too and just how close you were. One thing I wish I didn't have to do was tell people that they DIDN'T win. I mean, if I could I'd send a game to everyone! Someday.

Bob watches Survivor like I do. So let's have it Bob - give us your prediction of:

Who do you WANT to win? (I want James or Amanda)
Who SHOULD win? (James)
Who WILL win? (Probably P.G or the Flight Attendant)

Also, could some of those people be any MORE annoying? I was so glad that John Robert got voted off! On that note, I'm sorry to say that the Tribe has spoken and MODERN ART was voted off at the last Tribal Council.

Have a very Merry Christmas anyways Bob!

I am picking this one because you stated that you don't see much depth in it, and that it seems like more of a "math exercise"...

On a side note, I am very thankful that you are doing this, as I cannot afford to participate in the Secret Santa this year. I am working a temp job which ends in December and may be unemployed again thereafter. So money is tight, and after unemployment for 8 months my wife and I accrued a great deal of debt. But we are digging our way out slowly and I am keeping my head up and still looking forward to the holidays...

Little things like this contest are hopeful reminders of the spirit of the season. Thank you again for your generous and fun contest. I too love your personal responses!

Diehard4life made a great guess with Power Grid, but was unfortunately incorrect. It was not the game I chose for this year's contest. After you reminded me of my comments for that game, I'm going to play it again and re-evalute my rating just to be sure - I hate giving the wrong impressions about games to people who take the time to check out my ratings.

You are quite welcome too by the way. I hope that most people feel that this contest is less about the actual winning of the game than sharing the spirit of the holiday. I wish I had a way to bottle the feelings I get from reading all the personal commentaries (like this one) so I could liberally use it through the season.

I can can very much relate to your employment woes! I spent the last three years studying & training to be a... (wait for it) REAL ESTATE APPRAISER! After taking a big hit in pay to dedicate myyself to get through the training and "pay my dues", I now am licensed and on my own...with no clients! Matter of fact, most Mortgage companies are letting Appraisers go!

How's that for timing?! LOL. I too am a believer in positive thinking and just keep on plugging along hoping that something will turn up. So here's to YOU and ME and a better 2008 my friend!

I was very fascinated with all the Viking related games, microbadges and other information on your profile. Cool stuff! I hope you find a copy of Power Grid under the tree this year!

Merry Christmas (Thanks for the XMAS Tree too!)

I will guess Mississippi Queen. The reason for this guess is that I was recently introduced to this game (thanks Drew!) and enjoyed it. Was it serendipity?

As for game comparisons here goes (which are not guesses!):
Attika - So far you like it more than I do. Every game I've played I'm able to connect two temples which doesn't feel very satisfying. Teaching the game is also problematic because of the two actions: draw or build. "What? You mean I can build when I draw?" This comment has occurred to everyone, including myself.
Cartagena - We both like this. I only wish I could play it more, but I tend to beat my S/O, which she doesn't like very much.
Citadels - We both like, but you need to add a comment.
Colossal Arena - I like the balance of bidding and hand management. This game doesn't get played often because I find the FFG cards very difficult to use.
Colosseum - I've only played once. It was a good time, but I don't think it is a perfect game, especially as it doesn't work for two people. Further plays may improve this first impression.
Cosmic Encounter - I own Simply Cosmic, which I really need to try. I see you don't like it as much. Why is that?
Die Macher - I agree with your "Wow" sentiment, but I ended up trading this game away as the first game almost killed me. (I was teaching, learning, playing, and being the banker all at once.)
El Grande - We both like.
Fearsome Floors - We both like, though I might like it a bit more.
Power Grid - We both like, but me more than you. Yes it is a math exercise, which I happen to like.
Puerto Rico - We both like, but don't play often. My reason is that it is a longer game that takes a bit to set up. As such, time is the big issue.
Ra - Razzia! is better.
RoboRally - I'm a fan.
San Marco - A truly beautiful game, which I find a bit boring. It takes too long for someone to cut the cards, then you wait while others decide. I get the same fix from Canal Grande, which plays quicker.
Scattergories - Owned, but I really suck at it so don't play it very often.
Shadows Over Camelot - I like my initial play.
Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit - Played once. The dice were a huge factor in the game. So much, in fact, that it only lasted 90 minutes instead of the 3 hours that seems usual. As such, I don't know what to think of it yet.
Ticket to Ride - Good for gamers and non-gamers.
Tikal - Another beautiful game. The Action Point system, however, will induce analysis paralysis in anyone. As such, I don't play it very often because of the down time issues.
Tutankhamen - A fun little games that takes too long to set up.
ZÈRTZ - My favorite game to play outside on the patio. That said, Yinsh is better.

Final thought, this might work really well as a geeklist where each participant makes his or her guess by including a geeklist item. It would also make it easier to follow your comments of responding to everyone individually.

Good luck to everyone the contest! Thanks Scott!

How did that rhyme go? M I S S I S S I P P I. No that can't be right. I mean the spelling is correct, but that's not the rhyme. Mississippi Queen does not get pulled out often in my game group Chris so it really is a good guess. You see, my Game group (the CVW) is a bunch of old timers that enjoy anything with combat, territories and the potential for what we like to refer to as "shenanigans". Mississippi barely makes the cut here as there is the opportunity to push the other players steamboats around a bit. However, the CVW is an inventive bunch.

One of our members came up with some house rules and now we have a new game called "Mississippi Gunboats". I kid you not! Picture spar torpedos, gattling guns and "armor" from bales of hay and you'll get the basic idea. It no longer is really a race, just a gauntlet to survive. What I'm trying to say is that it although it was a GOOD guess, it wasn't the CORRECT guess unfortunately.

Let me comment on some of your game comparisons to me:

Attika - I think this occurs in EVERY game I play!

I say: "You can Draw 2 (and build immediately) or Build 3."
They say: "I'm going to Build 2 and Draw 1."
I say: "No, You can Draw 2 (and build Immediately) or Build 3."
They say: "Can I Draw 3?"
Argh!
Citadels - I do need to comment on this. I do generally like it alot, except when you are playing with more than 5 or 6 people as the game can increase in time drastically for some reason.
Colosseum - Tremendously fun, but I fear that there is limited replayability after the first 15 games or so. By then, you start to see a pattern to how to best win a game and you seldom deviate. At that point, the luck of the draw of the tiles can make or break you.
Die Macher - I agree, it can be intensely overloading on the brain. That being said, the 1 or 2 times I play it during the year makes me bow to its magnificence.
Tikal - One of the best games I can think of - AP is not an issue if you are into the game.
El Grande - Ditto. I like the expansions too.
Puerto Rico - I have a love/hate relationship with this. It's been ruined (over analyzed) in my regular game group, but it is still fun for casual play with the family.

You had a good suggestion about this being a Geeklist too - as you can see I took your advice. I actually had considered it for the first part of the contest too, but it doesn't work as well in that case. The main problems are:

1. That a Geeklist scrolls off the main page MUCH faster than the BGG Related Forum items do. Not necessarilly a problem initially, but after 3 weeks from the time the contest gets originally posted to the the time I reply with the comments, most of the people who guessed would never see the results.

2. I'd be VERY tempted to comment with people during the contest for the very reason you mention about the ease of following along the conversation. In this format, I just let it run and then I can add formating later when I reply to make it more readable - more work but less tempation.

3. People may just say a "Me Too" under a game entry of someone else which maks writing the replies in order a lot more difficult.

Hope that helps you to understand my "logic" in picking the Forums for the first part, but thanks so much for the Geeklist suggestion which works out much better for this part!

Have a great Christmas!

My guess is Primordial Soup.

We have our first duplicate guess! Well, if you've been reading along Glenn, you already know that I have "No Soup for You" either I'm sad to say. I wish I had picked it though, as anyone who rates Cosmic Encounter as a "10" is ok in my book. It's your ONLY 10 too. That is kinda cool. I admire those with the fortitude and willpower to stick to the "There can be only one #1 game" mentality. Me? I'm weak!

So being a CE fan, have you: added any of your own powers?, used any of the multitude of variants created for the game?, have any great House Rules that I should try?, combined more than one different version of the game to make the "ultimate Players Version"? My favorite is to combine Cosmic and More Cosmic into a 10 player version with two cones travelling around simultaneously! Total Insanity as you can imagine.

At any rate, thanks for stopping in and doing your part to make my contest that much more enjoyable for me.

Merry Christmas and don't forget to "Tip the Butler!"

Merry Christmas to you too...thanks for running this contest!!!!

Greg

Wasn't there an 11th Commandment? "Thou Shall Not Covet Thy Neighbors Games" - or something along those lines! I sure am wishy washy sometimes. Or maybe it's just laziness. People base their guesses on my comments and then I realize I haven't updated those comments in AGES. That really is kind of lame of me. There are just soooo many to do!

Although I am guarenteed to be accused of being a Traitor, I do have to say that Shadows Over Camelot was not the game I selected this year.

(Shouts of TRAITOR! come from the rafters) See?

Heh, "Bingo, Gringo." That made me laugh for some reason. Now, on a totally unrelated brainwave here, I'm REALLY curious Greg, you have 8 games rated a 10 and only 8 games rated total. What's going on there?? Even more puzzling is that you show only owning 3 games total! I'm really intrigued to tell you the truth. After much pondering, I came up with two theories, and you may acknowledge or deny them as you wish:

1: You have only JUST started to add your games to your collection here at BGG and you simply started with the best.

2: You only buy a game that you have played elsewhere and therefore, KNOW that it is going to be a 10 already.

How is that for some fancy logic?

Don't leave me hanging Greg - this will haunt me late at night when I'm at the computer updating my ratings and my OCD tendencies grab a hold of me.

You also be sure to have a very Merry Christmas!

Awesome. I will guess Memoir 44. I have only been involved in this hobby for a short time (about 8 months now). I am really interested in getting into wargaming, and think Memoir is a great first step.

Thanks for doing this.

First things first, what does your username mean? I'm good at figuring out license plates and stuff like that but I'm stumped. Tell me so I can move on with something else to obsess over!

You will really like Memoir'44 David. I wish it was going to be me that was giving it to you too, as I think it will be a favorite of yours.

If you are getting into wargaming, that it is great way to start. From there, let me make a few suggestions to ease you into them:

I take it you picked Memoir'44 over Battlelore for the time period and lack of fantasy elements, so next up I'd recommend something like Tide of Iron which is a a little it of a step up from the simpler - no make that straightforward, tactics of Memoir. Both are great games and each will scratch a different itch I think.

You'll want to try an old classic too at some point, so look to the old Avalon Hill games for some great ones. If I were to recommend just one, I'd say The Russian Campaign, as it is considered one of AH's finest. It has it's flaws but it is a great game. From there, you could do one of my favorites, Anzio - a game that is cool for the stepped strength losses of units. Some of the newer stuff you may like include games like Paths of Glory or Combat Commander: Europe - both of which are really liked by the wargamers in my game group.

If you are hooked by then... try an ASL starter kit - which is the doorway to an alternative way of life! LOL!

Thanks for taking a stab at guessing David, Keep me posted on what you try next.

Happy Holidays to you and your family too.

so I'm going to go with Twilight Imperium

Quote:
1st edition - 2 sets. Nice blend of mechanics from Settlers, Axis & Allies, Risk & Cosmic Encounter. Ive made a few special scenery hexes for this game myself. Raised this to a 9 as it has consistantly been a game where I walk away from a game of 4+ hours feeling like I want more.

After all you have 2 sets, it blends mechanics from several other highly rated games, your rating is steadily increasing and you consistently walk away wanting more. Since you want to spread joy, this is how you will go.

I REALLY should acquire an extra set of Man O War one of these days just to give away in this contest. That would surprise the hell out of people don't you think? I'll have to see what I can do about this for a future contest!

Scott, you made a pretty good selection here. Twilight Imperium is a truly epic game and everything you said about my feelings about it is dead on. Well, except for the part about it being the game I picked for this year. But everything else is very true.

Have you played TI:3rd Edition? I may be in the minority, but I find it to be a completely different gaming experience than a game of the 1st Edition. It's got some cool stuff in it, but for me, it lost a little bit of it's Wargame heritage. 1st Edition was notorious for these HUGE build-ups of forces that inevitably were unleased in the endgame. Turn order was based on INFLUENCE, not the role you selected! If you were the strongest player, you got to chose When you went. I loved that! if you were going to make you big attack, you simply went ahead of the player who you were going to crush! Ah the good old days!

So, I'm sitting here looking at your games rated a 10 and I see both Advanced Civilazation and Age of Renaissance. You would SO get along with Darryl in my game group. He is to AoR what I am to MOW. He and John from our group are making a large scale map of AoR to be used at conventions and large game nights. I've never played it so I can't go into more details, but suffice to say, the way they talk about the stuff they are making for the game, it must be good stuff. Right? I would think so anyways.

I'll be sure to post some pics of whatever it is, so make sure you have selected to be notified of AoR content and that way you won't miss it.

Better luck next year Scott, have a Merry Christmas!

So now I'm thinking seeing it there and then on your list was karma.

Rik, what the hell is that avatar of yours from? It looks like a Zombie John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever or something! Whoooa! Wait a minute, that would be a cool idea for a game! Zombie Discos. What do you think?

Ok, back to the business at hand. Manifest Destiny. Great game. It gets played at the Central Valley Wargamers alot because it meets the majority of the unspoken criteria that the group seems to like:

1. Conflict.
2. Empire building.
3. Conflict.
4. Ability to "mess" with the other players (what we call "the shenanigan factor").
5. Conflict.
6. Negotiations/politics
7. Conflict.

You laugh, but I'm serious, these guys love to take territories back and forth. We played Shogun and it took them awhile to adapt to the "combat" in that game, because it's over so fast and so little of it overall.

Now where was I? Oh yeah. You are wondering if it is on the way to your home. Well, I'm sorry, but I don't technically OWN a copy, so that makes it more difficult. I rate games I play and don't own myself and every year a few people pick a game from my collection that I have only played. Kind of like what happened here! I'm sorry Rik, If I had one it would be on it's way! Seriously!

Maybe next year I'll have a copy myself and then we can try this again. Ok?

So I see you are a Roborally nut too. Awesome! Roborally gets played a few times a year in the club too. Some of us have it down and some of us just randomly move about and hope not to die too many times. Roborally is definately a game where you "get" it or don't. Personally, I get it, and you must too for giving such a high rating. Did you have an "aha!" moment with Roborally? I did. For me it was realizing that you could look at the board and consider certain board effects as having a card in your hand (as opposed to planning a move and then trying to react to the way the board moved you). Know what I mean?

This holiday season be sure to program yourself to:

Phase 1: Move 1
Phase 2: Rotate Right
Phase 3: Rotate left
Phase 4: Move 2
Phase 5: Back-Up

..to end up on the Christmas Flag! Happy Holidays

Yes. I hear them. Tiny voices. Should we call them the Voices of Doom? It seems appropriate. Especially since I'm sorry to say that Doom was not the lucky game this year, and that sucks too, because it really is a fun game and I know you'd enjoy it. I need to win the lottery. I'd love to send everyone EXACTLY what they guessed! How great would that be? Just totally suprise the hell out of everyone! Next year. Or the year after. Maybe.

WOW, GREAT group of games in your collection there. We're so Geekbuddy compatible too! Isn't Fury of Dracula just a totally awesome game? I think I could play that at least once a month and never get tired of it. I see you also have Blackbeard rated highly. Have you been waiting for the new GMT version too? Just a few months more. It looks fantastic and I'm itching to play it.

*Checking out your interests too*

Ahhh... The Fisher King! I love that movie! Jeff Bridges has always been a favorite. Speaking of heaing voices, remember when he hears the imaginary horses and says:

Jack Lucas: "I'm hearing horses! Parry will be so pleased!"

Cracks me up every time.

I was kinda rambling here a bit Murry, but I'm completely coherent when I wish you a very

I've only played Through the Desert a few times so it would have made a great choice for this year's contest. Damn! How could I have been so stupid? I picked something else altogether and now I'm kicking myself.

Maybe next year Tim! Until then I need to ask you some questions about your collection. Highest game is rated an 8. Is that intentional or are you still entering games and you just happened to stop there? I was going to suggest a few to try if that was the case, but you do have a lot of games I like, just rated a bit lower. As a matter of fact, most of your 8's are my 9's and 10's! Maybe you have really high standards and an 8 to you is like a 10 to the rest of us - that would be cool because then you have plenty of room to hand out those rare 9's and the nearly impossible to get Holy Grail of your rating - the 10!

I'm really curious about this so be sure to let us know your criteria, I enjoy reading about the different ways people share what the think about a game and to me, someone who hands out very few 9's and 10's is definately someone that I want to read a few reviews from.

Sorry I could not help on the Through the Desert thing Tim,

Merry Christmas!

Scott,

Thanks for the contest again. I had a lot of fun with it last year and added a geekbuddy as well.

After looking over your game list, I believe the game you are giving away is Mexica. You own all three of the mask games, Tikal, Java, and Mexica. You love Tikal (as do I), really like Java and somewhat like Mexica. Because you like the other two games better, you decided that you do not need Mexica because it never makes it to the table.

Merry Christmas,

Larry

Larry you are right, Mexica has not made it to the table nearly enough, I really do need to rectify that. What might not be evident as you peruse through my collection, is that I am a collector almost as much as I am a gamer. (ALMOST!) It would be very difficult for me to break up the Mask Trilogy for that reason alone. That right there is a tid-bit of useful information for next year's contest by the way.

Ultimately this means that I didn't select Mexica to leave my abode this year - but ya never know, I could get a 2nd copy...which means that next year would be fair game again.

As I was going through your profile, a couple of things popped out at me. First off, I noticed you have Up Front rated a 10. Excellent choice! Although I have not rated it quite that high, I can appreciate the reasons why you have. At the CVW, we ran a mini tournament that saw us playing it at least once a week for a month or two. It was the first I had played the game after owning it for all these years (I bought it new many years back). Like so many others, getting through the rule book was next to impossible and I was taught face to face by John from our game group. It amazes me that the rulebook could be so unecessarilly complex for such a simple, game.

The 2nd thing I noticed in your collection was that you rate Supremacy a 2. A 2! I've actually never been able to play - even though I own most of the series, as I kind of got into the system just as it went out of print and I mostly picked it up from a collector standpoint (See?). I've wanted to introduce it to the group, but I've read about the flawed market system myself and having never played it, have no understanding of how it is really flawed or how people would suggest fixing it. Did your group have any house rules or variants to fix the game? If not, its ok - I had to ask because just finding someone who has played it is a treat, regardless of their rating!

One thing that is not flawed is my wishing you a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My guess is La Cittá. The new edition has just been launched, and you seem interested in giving it another try.

Thanks for the contest, and even though I don't win it was fun and interesting to read your comments. I've added you as my geek buddy.

Greetings from Chile!

Greetings to you Nicolas!

I am completely unaware of a new edition of La Citta. Is this another Rio Grande reprint? That's what mine is and it's one of the games I first got when I really got serious about Eurogames. Back then Rio Grande had 1 or 2 games come out at a time and it was easy to get them all. Not any more! I'm sorry to say that La Citta is also not the game I'm giving away this year, but I'm very glad you stopped in to give it a shot at guessing.

I see you are from Santiago - I've always heard that Chile is a beautiful country and I've wanted to take a vacation there - maybe a quick jaunt to Easter Island too. Who knows? Someday I might be able to afford to travel more and there are a lot of great places I'd want to go to.

As I was going through your collection, I stopped at the first game I've been wanting to play that I have not had the chance to yet - Hansa.

Now your comments are in spanish:

Excelente juego, muy rápido (20 mins. con 2 personas) y con múltiples alternativas y estrategias. Un poco árido y medio abstracto, pero un gran juego.

and I'm a bit rusty, but I think you say:

"Excellent game, very fast (20 mins. with 2 people) and with (multiple?) alternative strategies. A little (bare?) and average abstract, but a great game."

This sounds like a game I could get the wife to play. Have you played it with any women? If not, is it something you would recommend for my wife to try? She absolutely HATES learning new games, but once she has learned them, she is fine. Complexity does not matter. So, what do you think?

Thanks for coming and playing in my contest. If I ever get to Santiago, I'd like to play a game or two!

Feliz Navidad!

My thoughts: Gut feeling that this year's game will be an 8. Lots of choices already taken there (my initial gut feeling was Memoir or Power

Grid), but I see you've got a rediscovered interest in Puerto Rico, and perhaps want to spread that around.

Thus, Puerto Rico is my official entry.

Thank you. Thumb greatly appreciated!

An 8? You know, I don't even think I planned it one way or another to be honest. I'm usually on the lookout for a game or two during the 3 or so conventions I go to during the year so I'll have something cool to give away during this contest. So you may be right. It could be an 8. Or a 7 or a 9 too. Maybe I gave away a 10! It's too bad I didn't give away Puerto Rico because it would have been cool to make your Christmas just a little bit better. I'll consider it next year - I promise!

Without a lot of hubbabaloo, I'm just gonna say it - YOU GIVE FLUXX (several versions actually) a NINE! I think that is so cool! You GET it - so many people don't (which I understand), but FLUXX is meant to be that mindless diversion that can make you laugh - something that it succeeds at quite well too. I remember the first time I saw the 1st Edition - probably 10 years ago or so. I remember reading the box -

Which had these simple rules:

Fluxx - A perfectly simple game for 2-6 Players.

Simple? Fluxx has one rule: "Draw 1 card and then play 1 card." What card might one play? Well, one might play Time, or War, or perhaps

Love. I shall play chocolate - it is a fine thing to have Chocolate. What's this? You have played the card "Play 2 Cards." Well, play a 2nd card! Do you not know the Rule of FLUXX? It is "Draw 1 Card and then Play 2 Cards." Well, that's what it is NOW. Perfectly simple. The goal of the game? Ah, I'm terribly sorry. No one has played one yet.

I read that and knew I had to get it. It seemed just umm... looney enough to be fun. I've bought several decks and new versions over the years too. Zombie FLUXX looks to be great too.

By the way, if you don't have a copy, they have a limited number of 1st Edition FLUXX decks available (with a special promo card) at their website. 1st Edition decks were in black and white and they were larger cards. Get it!

I will guess: Battlelore - because you own it, yet it is also a must have on your wishlist, so obviously you're looking to replace the copy that you're gonna give away.

Oh, I'm just building up steam for Battlelore at the present Ernie. I got into Memoir'44 kinda late and still need to get all the expansion armies and I find myself falling behind with Battlelore too. The reason it's still on my wishlist? More figures AND the 2nd board for Epic. I really want to paint them all too. I need about 40 hours in a day! That means I'm keeping my Battlelore too Ernie - but there is always next year.

Looking through your collection, you made a great comment about Vegas Showdown that really got me thinking. Here it is:

"Some people say the mechanics are derivative, but I haven't played the games it's derived from so it's new to me. The theme is a big plus for me, my wife especially enjoys being able to build her own restaurants and buffets. A good game to introduce to non-gamers, all my friends that have played it enjoyed it a lot."

That is SO true. I mean, really who cares if the mechanics are derivative or not - is the game FUN? Isn't that why we play them? If they use mechanics of another game why should it bother us? Unless the game is a complete rip-off, it should be judged on its own. You hit the nail on the head with that observation Ernie and I'm going to be less judgemental on newer games that may be similar to other games I've played. I can be sucha Euro-snoot sometimes! Thanks for that nugget of pure wisdom.

Another thing I noticed is you've got Funkenschlag Atolla Modulis rated a 9. Is it really that good? I probably asked you that same question last year when you entered this contest. But I'm OLD! I forget things! LOL! I think I have the file somewhere, just need to print it up.

Tell me why I should go do that right away.

One more thing to say to you...

Merry Christmas my friend!

Caylus would be my guess!!!

You seem a man who loves boardgames, and perhaps the premium edition of Caylus would appeal to you for a game you rate so highly. So maybe you'd consider giving away your current copy. And Caylus would be a mighty fine gift in any edition!!!!

Otherwise, I would have thought of La Citta perhaps because of the new edition.

Or San Marco because it's almost Santa Marco.

But Caylus is my guess!!!!

First La Citta, now Cayus. Again, I've heard NOTHING of a New Edition! And I call myself a Geek. Someone give me a wedgie right now. The only thing I can recall is that Mike Doyle had designed new artwork for it - much like what he did for Puerto Rico. Is that part of the new edition?

Of course, me knowing not of what thou speakest, means that thy guesseth was wrongeth. I'm sorryeth!

I read your profile about your early days of the old style wargame from Avalon Hill. Although my experience was a different, I also can recall many a hour spent playing those games and being quite engrossed. Did you ever try History of the World by Avalon Hill? If not, you should look for the more recent version by Hasbro. You like Vinci and this isn't any more complicated than that. The Hasbro version has nice bits (a slew of plastic figures), and their is a lot of strategy and tactical choices in the game. It may satisfy that ole wargaming itch without turning you off with an abundance of rules or poor components. Just a thought.

Also, don't give up on El Grande - there is a slight subtleness to the way certain elements of the game works that may take a few more playings to appreciate. You may yet have an "Aha!" moment with it!

Hope your Christmas is a very Merry one!

I will guess Through the Desert. You haven't left a comment on it so you must not be that attached, eh?

Lukas, to be honest - I'm lazy! I look at my comments (or lack thereof) and know that I have a LOT of work to do still. I should add a few each day just to catch up, but then again... there is that whole lazy thing going on. Through the Desert was not the game I picked for the contest this year - it's still something I need to play more of. It did fall a little flat with the wife, but we only played it twice.

You have Age of Mythology rated a 9.5 in your collection, a game I was kind of disappointed with because of the issues with combat. You comment about changing the combat system and adding house rules. Care to help a fellow geek a bit with spme advice on how to make Age of Mythology the game it should be? I find that people who are passionate about a game generally have the best ideas on tweaking it to correct any problems or flaws. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for playing Lucas and have a Great Christmas!

Guess: Colosseum

I don't know why, just a feeling

Jeff, although I didn't pick Colosseum - you HAVE to get a copy for yourself one way or another for Christmas. It really is a fun game and the theme contributes greatly to the enjoyment of it. When we play, we take on the persona of an "Off Broadway Producer" and really play up the various events as we produce them... "Noooow playing in a Held Over engagement for the 3rd straight month - Musicians in Cages that Get Fed to the Lions! Don't miss this tasty morsel of Musical Carnage." Yeah, it's cheesy but it makes us laugh every time.

Looking through your collection I noticed that you break the ratings down even further into tenths of a point. Aladdin's Dragons is rated 8.2 and Power Grid is 8.4 for example. How do you come up with those ratings? Do you have some criteria to differentiate the games or is it more of a general feeling of "I like Power Grid a little bit more than Aladdin's Dragons." I've thought of doing something similar too, but then realized it's just one more thing I'd start and not finish!

Glad you came by and took a guess. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas!
