On the slate this month were a variety of auction games. However, freezing rain kept almost everyone away. Brian showed up, God bless him. But it's hard to have a good auction with just a couple people. So instead . . .

Brian's kind of a war gamer, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to break out Hellas, a game I recently received as part of a trade. I've been intrigued by this game since it came out.

In the first game I dabbled with war and sea travel and Brian marched right over me. In the second I mostly focus on war, but apparently not enough, as he beat me again.

This is a very tight game. It seems that one wasted turn can result in the opponent gaining enough of an advantage to win. So attempting a sea voyage or drawing cards is risky as the voyage might fail or you may end up with cards that don't do you any good. What's left is a war game that is pretty abstract and Go like. I like a little more variety in my games than Go offers, but the cost of enjoying that variety (voyaging or drawing cards) in this game seems to be defeat.

Brian and I both agreed that this is one that Danny would enjoy and likely be good at.

At this point my lovely wife had the kids put to bed and joined us for a game of Settlers. Before the first turn Brian shared with Mare and I that you start out the game with resources from your second played settlement. Huh? Wha? Let me check the rules. I mean, I have been playing this game for 10 years now. Hm. How about that. Learn something new every day. Not only that, but during the course of the game, Brian learned that 7 cards when a 7 is rolled is safe, and 8 is trouble.

Anyway, it was slow going for a while as wheat was like gold and bricks like silver. But as soon as Brian started throwing up cities it wasn't long before he had 10 points (we all agreed that 10 points did indeed end the game).

Mare called it a night and Brian and I opted for a dungeon crawl. We'd played this a few months ago and enjoyed it, but weren't sure we'd gotten all the rules quite right. We made some adjustments and were satisfied with the rules we played with. The quest rooms came up pretty quickly and as a result the quests were pretty easy to complete. Brian got 3 done pretty quickly and we thought about playing to 4, but could see that Brian would be able to complete his 4th the next turn so called it a night.

I like this game and can see dropping 15-bucks on another pack of cards. As everybody says is a light, easy dungeon crawl and the expansions would make for more than enough variety.

Brian sweeps. Tune in next month to see if Brian will be invited back.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.
