The year is winding down and all told it's been a strong year for wargames. GMT, MMP, Columbia and others have put out a strong group of games. Even though the official nominations won't be coming out until the late spring and the awards in the summer, we can still take a sneak peak at some of the games that will be likely candidates for nomination.
Keep in mind that there are possibly going to be changes in the categories this year so we could see things like a separate category for ancients or maybe expansions.

A monster game in both complexity and scale that's just been released. Much anticipated and highly rated by the few folks who have played it so far. I think this one will definitely get a nomination. But can a game of this complexity and size win? With Empire of the Sun winning a few years ago I think the answer is yes.

With it's predecessor Europe Engulfed winning Best World War II Boardgame in 2003, you have to think Asia Engulfed is a shoe in for nomination. Still to early to say if it will live up to the high bar that's been set for it, but from reading the rules (my copy is still out there somewhere waiting to come to me) I think it's looking pretty good so far.
As I write this it just hit me. America Engulfed: The American Civil War. Rick you've got to do it! Please!!!!

Using a tried and true mechanic similar to Hammer of the Scots. A good game although I wanted a bit more historical flavor to it. I think it's got a good shot at a nomination in the Best Pre-World War II Boardgame category.

Should get a nomination for Best Magazine-Published Boardgame. I have a copy although unplayed as of yet. Mind you the cover looks really cool.

In my mind the favorite for Best Magazine-Published Boardgame. This is a fantastic game. Beautiful counters with a really nice map. Game play is fast and easy and yet as a historical simulation I think it plays extremely well. A great wargame for those nights when you only have 2 or 3 hours to play.

An excellent expansion for Combat Commander. Problem is there isn't an award for expansions. My hope is that they add another category for expansions. If they do then I think this one has to be a shoe in for nomination.

Some will say this isn't really a wargame and that likely will work against it being nominated. However I think it's got an outside shot due to it's unique theme. Mind you any game where in combat you can use cannibalism against your opponent to me smacks of a wargame.

So far this series hasn't gotten much notice from the Charlies. However if indeed we see some category changes and specifically we see a category for the gunpowder era then I think this one could get a nomination.

With Bonaparte at Marengo winning in 2005 you have to think it's sequel will at least get nominated. It's got a strong 8.4 rating here on BGG with 120 total ratings, so it's been a big hit with the fans of the first game.

Won the award for Best Historical Simulation of the year from Games Magazine. Funny how they did that before the year was over but oh well. The game is rated highly by those who've played it but it hasn't exactly gotten a ton of talk in the wargaming world. So far it's gotten only 22 ratings here on BGG and 24 logged plays. Ok, that may not mean the world but contrast that with Napoleon's Triumph which has 120 ratings and 168 logged plays so far and you see my point. I just don't think this game has gotten enough wide exposure.

MMP was the big winner at the Charlies last year with Victory Lost by Tetsuya Nakamura. This year they've got another WW II eastern front game. This time by Japanese designer Masahiro Yamazaki. Well received so far but not getting the buzz that Victory Lost was getting last year. Mind you few games ever do as Victory Lost was a bigtime hit.

MMP's latest in the Napoleonic Brigade Series. May be a bit to niche area in terms of the historical era with it concentrating on the Iberian Peninsula in the Napoleonic era. It's got some nice artwork mind you. I think it's more likely to get a nomination for best graphics than in the pre-WW II category.

The latest from MMP/The Gamers in the Civil War Brigade series. Unlikely to get a nomination although if for no other reason than the series has been around for so long. Mind you, I'm a big fan of the series.

Again a niche area of military history and only 3 ratings on BGG so far for it makes it a longshot.

Ted Raicer and WW I. You can't beat that for a good game. Art wise this has one of the best box covers of the year.
